Other Blood Disorders.
I am adding this section of links to my web page because patients who recieve blood transfusions or have large quantities of blood withdrawn during treatment may develop blood iron overload or anemia. I recieved many blood transfusions during my treatment, and I now have blood iron overload. There are other blood disorders (below) as well that are not a result of blood transfusions or withdrawls.

The Rush Children's Hospital offers comprehensive diagnostic and treatment programs for children with hematologic and oncologic disorders. We offer the following programs to help your child:

  • Sickle Cell Disease Program
  • Bone and Soft Tissue Sarcoma Program
  • Leukemia and Lymphoma Disease Program
  • Bone Marrow Transplant Program
The Hemophilia Treatment Center is directed by Dr. Leonard A. Valentino, a physician with 12 years experience with bleeding disorders. The center offers comprehensive treatment for children and adults with hemophilia and other bleeding disorders.
The Sickle Cell Disease Program , led by Dr. Allen Korenblit , provides care for children with sickle cell disease and thallasemias. Dr. Korenblit brings 17 years experience to the treatment of these blood disorders.
The Bone and Soft Tissue Sarcoma Program is headed by Dr. Laura Pirich and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Program is coordinated by Dr. Allen Korenblit. Together with orthopedic oncologist Dr. Steven Gitelis, pediatric surgeon Dr. Kathryn Bass and Hematologist-Oncologist Dr. Lisa Giordano, they provide diagnostic/consultative services and disease management for the entire spectrum of solid tumors, leukemias and lymphomas.

    There are a number of conditions and diseases that can impact the blood cells, such as leukemia, lymphoma and anemia. (Read about " Leukemia " " Lymphoma " " Anemia ") The following provides information on many of the terms concerning disorders of the blood. ALL - Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia ALL is a usually rapidly progressive malignant disorder involving the production of immature white blood cells (BLASTS) which results in the replacement of normal bone marrow with blast cells. Also called Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia. Appears most commonly in children, but can occur in adults. (Read about " Leukemia ") AML - Acute Myelogenous Leukemia AML is a malignant disorder involving the white cells which results in the excessive accumulation of myeloid blast cells in both the bone marrow and the bloodstream. AML occurs in all ages and is the more common acute leukemia in adults. AML affects a different type of white cells than those affected by ALL. (Read about " Leukemia ")

Our cancer program has been recognized by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer as a "Pediatric Teaching Hospital Cancer Program." On average, the center cares for five newly diagnosed children with cancer each month, as well as several hundred ongoing hematology and oncology patients. Together they register about 5,000 outpatient clinic visits and 3,800 inpatient days annually. leukemia , the number-one type of childhood cancer, and 25 percent are treated for brain tumors , the second major cause of cancer in children. Five board-certified pediatric hematologists/oncologists hemophilia (COG), a nationwide organization of pediatric medical centers involved in the care of children with cancer. Membership in the COG assures that caregivers will follow the same protocols of care, whether the patient lives in Akron, or many other cities across the country. The center is named after the family of David and Martha Showers who gave $3 million in 2002 to help build a new center for childhood cancer and blood disorders (to be completed in summer 2004), as well as to help fund patient care, research and education programs.
