BARCELONA, SPAIN July 10, 2002 The prevalence of bone disorders such as osteomyelitis, osteopenia/osteoporosis, and osteonecrosis (avascular necrosis) is increased among children infected with the HIV virus. Physicians treating such patients should be sure to monitor them for bone problems.
With improved anti-HIV therapy, complications of chronic infection may become more prevalent, and the incidence of bone disorders in HIV-infected adults and children appears to be increasing.
James M. Oleske, MD, MPH from the University of Medicine and Dentistry, New Jersey Medical School, Newark, New Jersey, United States, presented results of a retrospective study he and his colleagues performed in a pediatric HIV-positive population during the XIV International AIDS Conference held here this week.
For the Pediatric AIDS Clinical Trials Late Outcomes Study (PACTG) 219, investigators are following HIV-infected and noninfected children who were exposed to HIV and antiretroviral drugs every six months until 24 months of age and then yearly thereafter until the age of 21. Dr. Oleske and colleagues performed a retrospective analysis on patients included in the cohort database from April 1993 to October 2001 by reviewing reports of bone disorders, based on medical history and the physician's or radiologist's diagnosis.

St. Jude Researchers Prove Mesenchymal Cells Can Be Transplanted During Bone Marrow Transplants Study Describes Procedure to Improve Symptoms of Bone Diseases.
MEMPHIS, TENN, March 1, 1999 Researchers at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital have made a new discovery that may help patients suffering from a variety of debilitating and life-threatening bone diseases, including dwarfism, dysplasia and osteoporosis, according to a study published in the March issue of Nature Medicine.
The study involved pediatric patients suffering from osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), a genetic disorder in which osteopenia leads to deformities, excessive fragility, frequent bone fractures, short statures, and in its severe form decreased life expectancy and sometimes death.

femoral head, a rough appearance to the joint surfaces and the beginning of bonespurs Like many disorders,Hip dysplasia is not a death sentence for your canine
http://labradoodles.homestead.com/HIPDYSPLASIA.html
Bottom of Page, Please Note.
There are MANY factors that play in hip/bone conditions. Some are inherited and some are caused by traumatic events. OFA certification cannot take place until your canine is two years of age. Why? Because your canine continues to grow until the age of two. When a breeder has a canine OFA certified, this in no way gives any offspring freedom from getting hip dysplasia.
The only canine cleared is the canine that was x-rayed. *** NOT!!!!! Although a canine has been given OFA clearance does not mean this canine will never get hip dysplasia. In fact any the dog is certified as good , It is likely that someime in its life, it will come down with H.D. appx 50/50 chance
The OFA board themselves have stated that 20-40% of all OFA good canine can still come down with this hip condition. OFA certification must be performed on a yearly basis clear one day, does not necessarily mean it will remain clear the next. It is disturbing to see a breeder place an ad regarding their canine's offspring as being clear of any hip problems because the parents are OFA certified good. That is a false statement and a

A Boon for Bone Research Astronauts operating in a weightless environment for long periods are subject to a form of bone deterioration known as disuse osteoporosis, which can pose a serious hazard for crews on future space missions that might run two years or more. After long exposure to microgravity, weight bearing bones lose calcium and density, become very brittle and are easily fractured. For two decades, NASA has been engaged in study and experimentation toward developing countermeasures-special nutritional/exercise programs, for example-to microgravity-induced bone deterioration. A particular need of this research was a way of making direct measurements of bone stiffness and mass; while there were available instruments for determining the mineral density of bone, an indirect indicator of bone strength, researchers became increasingly aware of the limitations of such systems in predicting fracture risk.
At Louisiana's Ochsner Bone Clinic, a technician is measuring the stiffness of a young patient's ulna in a research project aimed at developing advanced methods of treating bone disorders.

Bone Disorders
Treatments for Bone Disorders
Treatment for bone disorders:
Specific treatment for a bone disorder will be determined by your physician based on:
  • your age, overall health, and medical history
  • extent of the disease
  • your tolerance for specific medications, procedures, or therapies
  • expectations for the course of the disease
  • your opinion or preference
Treatment may include:
  • assistive devices (i.e., casts or crutches)
  • core decompression - a surgical procedure in which the inner layer of bone is removed to reduce pressure, allow for increased blood flow, and slow or stop bone and/or joint destruction.
  • osteotomy - a surgical procedure to reshape the bone and reduce stress on the affected area.
  • bone graft - a surgical procedure in which healthy bone is transplanted from another part of the patient's body into the affected area.
  • arthroplasty (total joint replacement) - a surgical procedure to remove and replace an arthritic or damaged joint with an artificial joint (called a prosthesis); may be considered only after other treatment options have failed to provide adequate relief from pain and/or disability.

The symptoms of Paget's disease of the bone may resemble other bone disordersor medical problems. Always consult your physician for a diagnosis.
http://swinfo.tamu.edu/clinical_content/adult/bone/pagets.htm
Paget's Disease of the Bone What is Paget's disease of the bone?
Paget's disease of the bone is a chronic bone disorder in which bones become enlarged and deformed. Bone may become dense, but fragile, because of excessive breakdown and deformation of bone. The disease affects both genders, is rarely found in people under the age of 40, and occurs in up to 3 percent of the US population. What causes Paget's disease of the bone?
The exact cause of Paget's disease of the bone is unknown, but it is suggested to be due to a slow viral infection of bone and may include a heredity factor. What are the symptoms of Paget's disease of the bone?
The following are the most common symptoms of Paget's disease of the bone. However, each individual may experience symptoms differently. Symptoms may include:
  • pain in the affected area
  • bone deformity in the affected area
  • susceptibility to fractures in the affected area
  • headache (if the affected area is the skull)
  • hearing loss (if the affected area is the skull)
The symptoms of Paget's disease of the bone may resemble other bone disorders or medical problems. Always consult your physician for a diagnosis.

Signs of arthritis include painful or stiff joint movement, joint swelling and a grating sensation during joint movement. Arthritis can also cause fever and redness of the skin over the joint. Polyarthritis is inflammation of several joints at the same time. It is often associated with complex internal diseases. Causes of arthritis include degeneration from aging, inherited arthritis, infection, injury, blood diseases, allergic or immune-mediated disease, and cancer. Radiographs (x-rays) and laboratory tests are necessary to determine the type and extent of the arthritis. Follow-up examinations during treatment are necessary to evaluate the response to therapy. Arthritis is usually a controllable rather than a curable disease. Therapy is designed to minimize discomfort and delay or prevent progression of disease. Notify your veterinarian if any of the following occur:
  • Your pet’s discomfort or lameness increases.
