Borderline Personality Disorder
Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a serious mental illness characterized by pervasive instability in moods, interpersonal relationships, self-image, and behavior. This instability often disrupts family and work life, long-term planning, and the individual's sense of self-identity. Originally thought to be at the "borderline" of psychosis, people with BPD suffer from a disorder of emotion regulation. While less well known than schizophrenia or bipolar disorder (manic-depressive illness), BPD is more common, affecting 2% of adults, mostly young women. There is a high rate of self-injury without suicide intent, as well as a significant rate of suicide attempts and completed suicide in severe cases. Patients often need extensive mental health services, and account for 20% of psychiatric hospitalizations. Yet, with help, many improve over time and are eventually able to lead productive lives.
Symptoms
While a person with depression or bipolar disorder typically endures the same mood for weeks, a person with BPD may experience intense bouts of anger, depression and anxiety that may last only hours, or at most a day. These may be associated with episodes of impulsive aggression, self-injury, and drug or alcohol abuse.

Overview of Borderline Personality Disorder
The Personality Disorders Institute offers the following information to the general public to enhance awareness of the particulary challenging psychiatric conditions known as borderline disorders or borderline personalities. Many patients struggle not only with symptoms such as depression, anxieties, obsessions or phobias for which help is typically sought, but also with control of emotion and agression, understanding of self, and tolerance of the treatment process. The discussion leads you through diagnosis , focusing on history and symptoms, and possible causes treatments and outcomes Contact and emergency information follows. I. DIAGNOSIS
The term "borderline" goes back a long way. For centuries, European society excluded people regarded as "insane" from normal life, confining them to asylums or driving them from one town to another. By the 18th century, a few doctors were beginning to study the people in asylums, and discovered that some of these patients had, by no means, lost the powers of reason: they had a normal grasp of what was real and what wasn't, but they suffered terribly from emotional anguish through their impulsiveness, ragefulness, and a general difficulty in self-government caused others to suffer. They seemed to live in a borderland between outright insanity and normal behavior and feeling.

Borderline Personality Disorder
Leonard Holmes, Ph.D. http://mentalhealth.about.com Most of us have heard of Borderline Personality Disorder. Much of what we hear seems to be negative. Patients with this disorder have gotten a bad reputation. Remember the movie Fatal Attraction? Mental health professionals are partly responsible for the bad rap that patients with this diagnosis have received. Some mental health professionals use this diagnosis for their female patients who are a "pain in the ass." If you are female and are seen as a "difficult patient" you may be at risk for getting this diagnosis. The only responsible way to apply this diagnosis to someone is to use DSM-IV criteria established by the American Psychiatric Association (or the international ICD diagnosis system).

Often misdiagnosed, mistreated, or ignored, borderline personality disorder has emerged as one of the most troubling and most common challenges in psychiatry.
by Alicia Potter
"I'm better off dead than alone." So Sholeh [*patient's names in this article have been changed] thought when she shoved her girlfriend, Amy, out of the bathroom, locked the door, and slumped to the floor with two bottles of Advil and a fifth of Bacardi. She swallowed the pills in fistfuls of five or six, washing them down with the rum. Amy, due to leave for a weekend in New York, banged on the door. Sholeh ignored her. Then Amy did the unexpected or was it the expected? She promised to cancel her trip. Already dangerously dizzy, Sholeh stopped. She jammed her finger down her throat and vomited. "It was as if I was saying, `Don't you dare go to New York,' " explains Sholeh, 19. "What I really was afraid of was that she'd meet someone else and leave me." Border patrol
Borderline Personality Disorder: A Definition
This wasn't the first time Sholeh had resorted to drastic measures to avoid being alone. By the time she got to college, nights alone were triggering such severe anxiety attacks that she deliberately stretched her days well into the evening, scheduling back-to-back classes, activities, dinners with friends. Still, there were times in the wee hours when panic had its way. On those nights, she'd dig a razor into her shins and watch the blood wind crookedly down her legs.

78. Understanding Borderline Personality Disorder And Obsessive-Compulsiveness
UNDERSTANDING borderline personality disorder AND OBSESSIVECOMPULSIVENESS. BorderlinePersonality Disorder was officially recognized as a diagnosis in 1980.
http://faculty.ncwc.edu/toconnor/401/401lect17.htm
UNDERSTANDING BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER
AND OBSESSIVE-COMPULSIVENESS As opposed to psychopaths, sociopaths, and antisocials who are afflicted with a disease of detachment, borderlines and the obsessive-compulsive are afflicted with a disease of attachment . People with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) are pathologically attached to persons, places, and things so much that, like antisocials, they block out any other person's right to an opinion, and in some cases, even another person's right to exist. As with all personality disorders, there's a disinhibition of violence. Both BPD and OCD are more often diagnosed in females than in males, although not exclusively so. Female serial killers who act as "Angels of Mercy", for example, would suffer from BPD, as might anyone who attempts to right the world's wrongs, seek revenge or payback. Aileen Wuornos, for example, was diagnosed by a prison neuropsychologist as being a perfect case of BPD. Jeffrey Dahmer's sexual behaviors were characterized by another psychiatrist as displaying OCD. It's important not to confuse OCD (the personality disorder) with obsessive compulsive anxiety disorder (the anxiety disorder). It's the anxiety disorder most people are thinking of when they characterize obsessive-compulsiveness as irrational rituals (repetitive housecleaning, handwashing, book organizing, etc.)
