Borderline personality disorder ‘I wish I had never been diagnosed with BPD. With another
diagnosis yet similar behaviour I was treated so differently.
Possibly the most painful part of this illness (I will call it that)
is the discrimination. And the only reason for this is the
diagnosis, not the way I feel, behave or speak, because that
was the same before.’
Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a controversial
diagnosis. This booklet aims to help people to understand
when the diagnosis might be given and its consequences.
It suggests sources of help for those diagnosed with this
problem, their friends and relatives. What is borderline personality disorder?
BPD is one of many personality disorders listed in the manuals used by clinicians when they are giving someone a psychiatric diagnosis. The word 'personality' refers to the on-going pattern of thoughts, feelings and outward behaviour that makes us the people we are. A personality disorder may be diagnosed when it's felt that several areas of someone's personality are causing them or others problems in everyday life. This diagnosis is very controversial, because it implies

This core of this site is the Borderline Personality Disorder Section previously housed at Soul's Self Help Central. Here I will include much more information and with a much greater focus on Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). However, when attempting to understand BPD we cannot do this in any narrow way. So, other aspects of often co-morbid (co-existing) issues that those diagnosed with BPD have to deal with will also be included here. This site looks provide an insightful understanding about Borderline Personality Disorder and the accompanying behaviour and difficult challenges for both the person diagnosed with BPD and those around him/her. For those who know me from my Soul's Self Help Web Site you will get much more of what you are used to including more articles and insight from me, up-coming E-books and much more material from other contributors as well as time goes by. All of my articles on BPD (click on A.J.'s Articles) from 1999-2001 are available for your reading. I will be writing an article a month from now on and the rest of my writing will be made available for a small fee in either e-book or PDF format. Check back as I will be adding these in the near future.

Borderline personality disorder or BPD is a relatively new classification in DMS-III (1980 American Psychiatric Association's "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders"). Though symptoms of this disorder have been studied and written about by eminent psychiatrists and psychologists throughout this century and even before, it is believed that six million or more individuals in the U.S. have this illness two percent to four percent of the population. Women apparently are four times more likely to have BPD, although it is widely considered that men with BPD often go undiagnosed. Men with BPD may have had ADD (attention deficit disorder) as children. The causes of BPD are not completely clear but it is thought that some cases can be caused by genetics, i.e. the patient is biologically vulnerable. Yet most cases (75%) are thought to stem from a chronic childhood psychotrauma a kind of continuing post-traumatic stress disorder.

On a modem? Please give the test a minute to load.
This test, sponsored by 4degreez.com , is meant to help determine whether or not you have a personality disorder. It is not meant to be used as a diagnostic tool, but rather as a tool to give you insight into a potential disorder that may be having a negative impact on your life. If you believe you may be suffering from a personality disorder or any other disorder, you should ask your family doctor to recommend a therapist in your area to meet with.
First, what is a personality disorder?
A personality disorder is basically a set of traits that combine to negatively affect your life. They have a wide range of causes and some are easier to treat than others. This test is set up to look for the ten recongized personality disorders which are Paranoid, Schizoid, Schizotypal, Antisocial, Borderline, Histrionic, Narcissistic, Avoidant, Dependent, and Obsessive-Compulsive.
Once again, this test is not meant to be used as a diagnostic tool. Only a trained professional can properly diagnose a personality disorder.

Topic Home · Related: Mental Disorders Introduction Staff Personality disorders are pervasive chronic psychological disorders, which can greatly affect a person's life. Having a personality disorder can negatively affect one's work, one's family, and one's social life. Personality disorders exists on a continuum so they can be mild to more severe in terms of how pervasive and to what extent a person exhibits the features of a particular personality disorder. While most people can live pretty normal lives with mild personality disorders (or more simply, personality traits), during times of increased stress or external pressures (work, family, a new relationship, etc.), the symptoms of the personality disorder will gain strength and begin to seriously interfere with their emotional and psychological functioning. Those with a personality disorder possess several distinct psychological features including disturbances in self-image; ability to have successful interpersonal relationships; appropriateness of range of emotion, ways of perceiving themselves, others, and the world; and difficulty possessing proper impulse control. These disturbances come together to create a pervasive pattern of behavior and inner experience that is quite different from the norms of the individual's culture and that often tend to be expressed in behaviors that appear more dramatic than what society considers usual. Therefore, those with a personality disorder often experience conflicts with other people and vice-versa. There are ten different types of personality disorders that exist, which all have various emphases.
