This site started in 1995 to fill, what was then, a real gap on the web for UK based support and information for women affected by breast cancer. Almost all the organisations we originally provided information about now have their own websites, which you can find on the Support and Information page . The other pages on this site mainly form an archive or record of the work we did on the site during its early years - much of which is still of interest or relevance today.

The Breast
The female breasts are modified sweat glands composed of lobes and lobules interspersed with adipose tissue and connective tissue. Ducts drain from each lobule. These converge to form a lactiferous duct that drains from each lobe. The lactiferous ducts merge just beneath the nipple to form a lactiferous sinus. The functional secretory unit in lactation is the terminal duct lobular unit. Here, each duct has a lining epithelium surrounded by a thin myoepithelial cell layer responsive to oxytocin, the hormone that stimulates lactation. Neoplasms may arise in either the ductular epithelium, lobules, or the stroma. However, the majority of cancers arise in the ducts.
  • Normal breast, high power microscopic. Normal breast, duct with myoepithelial cells identified by immunoperoxidase staining for actin, high power microscopic.
  • Incidence of Breast Cancer
Breast cancer is very rare before age 20 and is rarely diagnosed in women younger than age 25. Past that age, the incidence rises steadily to reach a peak around the age of menopause. The rate of increase is lessened after menopause, but older women are still at increasing risk over time. About 1 in 8 women in the United States and Canada will develop breast cancer. This incidence is similar for many European countries. However, breast cancer is much less common in Asia.

    An interactive tool
    to measure a woman’s risk
    of invasive breast cancer
Scientists at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP) Biostatistics Canter have developed this Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Tool, a Web tool that allows a health professional to project a woman’s individualized estimate of risk for invasive breast cancer over a 5-year period and over her lifetime (to age 90). This tool uses statistical methods applied to data from the Breast Cancer Detection and Demonstration Project, a mammography screening project conducted in the 1970s. This Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Tool has been designed for a health professional to project an individual patient's estimate of invasive breast cancer risk. It is only part of the complex discussion regarding a woman's options in reducing her risk of breast cancer. Therefore, if you are not a health professional, you should discuss with your doctor the interpretation of the results of this risk profile. Another useful source of information that may help in the discussion with your health care professional is the Cancer Information Service (CIS), which may be reached at 1-800-4-CANCER.

MSDBC is a national nonprofit organization co-founded by a mother (Charmayne Dierker) and her daughter (Lillie Shockney) in March 1995. The support services provided by this organization are free and are designed to help mothers who have daughters battling breast cancer. Support is provided in a variety of ways including one on one support by mother volunteers who have had firsthand experienced the trauma and challenges of having a daughter diagnosed with breast cancer, through distribution of a mother's handbook and daughter's companion brochure to provide guidance as to how a mother can be constructively helpful to her daughter during her breast cancer treatment, and through requests for education about the disease and its treatment when questions arise related to basic medical questions about this disease and how surgery and adjuvant therapy work. Medical consultation is not provided but responses to medical questions that are general in nature are appropriate.
