The viral infection produces bronchial inflammation, which sets the stage for bronchitis and secondary bacterial infection. Chronic bronchitis is a long-term condition of excessive bronchial mucus with a productive cough . Chronic bronchitis is also known as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease Cigarette smoking (active and passive exposure) is the chief cause of this disease. Factors that make it worse include air pollution, infection, familial factors like genetic history and allergies The severity of the disease often relates to the amount and duration of smoking. Chronic Bronchitis
Bronchitis happens when the bronchi and smaller air-carrying tubes in your lungs become plugged with mucus. This makes you cough and spit - just like a really bad cold. Chronic bronchitis is when this coughing and spitting continues for months at a time, and it keeps coming back every year.
Chronic bronchitis can make things like taking a bath and walking up a few stairs very difficult, because it makes you run out of breath! A lot of people with bronchitis have to breathe from special oxygen tanks so that their body cells can get the amount of oxygen they need to live.
Chronic bronchitis can lead to emphysema - another lung disease. Like emphysema, chronic bronchitis is caused by smoking. Non-smokers hardly ever get it, so the best way to avoid having chronic bronchitis is to never start smoking. There is no cure for chronic bronchitis. Back to: the Lung Disease Index

Chronic Bronchitis
From the American Lung Association Chronic Bronchitis
What Is Chronic Bronchitis? Bronchitis is an inflammation of the lining of the bronchial tubes. These tubes, the bronchi, connect the windpipe with the lungs. When the bronchi are inflamed and/or infected, less air is able to flow to and from the lungs and a heavy mucus or phlegm is coughed up. This is bronchitis. Many people suffer a brief attack of acute bronchitis with cough and mucus production when they have severe colds. Acute bronchitis is usually not associated with fever. Chronic bronchitis is defined by the presence of a mucus-producing cough most days of the month, three months of a year for two successive years without other underlying disease to explain the cough. It may precede or accompany pulmonary emphysema. What Causes Chronic Bronchitis? Cigarette smoking is by far the most common cause of chronic bronchitis. The bronchial tubes of people with chronic bronchitis may also have been irritated initially by bacterial or viral infections. Air pollution and industrial dusts are also causes. Once the bronchial tubes have been irritated over a long period of time, excessive mucus is produced constantly, the lining of the bronchial tubes becomes thickened, an irritating cough develops, air flow may be hampered, and the lungs are endangered. The bronchial tubes then make an ideal breeding place for infections.

29. Chronic Bronchitis
What is Chronic bronchitis? bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchi causingexcessive mucous production and swelling of the bronchial walls.
http://www.lung.ca/diseases/chronic_bronchitis.html
What is Chronic Bronchitis? The bronchi are air passages connecting the windpipe (trachea) with the sacs of the lung (alveoli) where oxygen is taken up by the blood. Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchi causing excessive mucous production and swelling of the bronchial walls. Many people suffer a brief attack of acute bronchitis with fever, coughing and spitting when they have a severe cold. Chronic bronchitis, however, is the term applied when this coughing and spitting continue for months and return each year, generally lasting slightly longer each time. Undue breathlessness on exertion is eventually noticed, due to obstruction to air flow in the air passages caused by swelling of the bronchial wall and the presence of mucus that cannot be cleared. For more information on living with Chronic Bronchitis consult the Breathe Easy Guide and other chronic lung disease resources. Emphysema is a disease in which there is destruction of the walls of the air sacs of the lung, and it is frequently preceded by chronic bronchitis. Emphysema adds to the breathlessness suffered by the patient with chronic bronchitis. What Causes Chronic Bronchitis?

This Publication Is Searchable The Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy Section 6. Pulmonary Disorders Chapter 69. Acute Bronchitis Topics [General]
[General]
Acute bronchitis: Acute inflammation of the tracheobronchial tree, generally self-limited and with eventual complete healing and return of function. Although commonly mild, acute bronchitis may be serious in debilitated patients and in patients with chronic lung or heart disease. Airflow obstruction is a common consequence, and pneumonia is a critical complication. Chronic bronchitis is discussed under Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease in Ch. 68.
Etiology
Acute infectious bronchitis, most prevalent in winter, is generally part of an acute URI. It may develop after a common cold or other viral infection of the nasopharynx, throat, or tracheobronchial tree, often with secondary bacterial infection. Viruses that cause acute bronchitis include adenovirus, coronavirus, influenza A and B viruses, parainfluenza virus, respiratory syncytial virus, coxsackievirus A21, rhinovirus, and the viruses that cause rubella and measles. Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Bordetella pertussis

Inflammation of the mucous membrane of the bronchial tubes (Catarrh is the old term).
    Causes
Infectious agents such as viruses, esp. influenza virus, or pyogenic organisms such as various species of Streptococcus, Pneumococcus , Staphylococcus, and Hemophilus. Infection often is preceded by the common cold , and often leads to pneumonia (inflammation of the lung). Predisposing factors for bronchitis: chilling, fatigue, and malnutrition. Acute bronchial irritation may also be caused by various physical and chemical agents such as dust and fumes. Allergic factors may be of importance. Exercising in cold air, one should wear a mask to warm the air inhaled.
    Symptoms
Incessant coughing due to the irritation present, a build-up of mucus, fever, back and chest pain, sore throat, and difficulty breathing. Chronic bronchitis results from frequent irritation of the lungs, but is not an infection. Allergies may be responsible for chronic bronchitis. If the chronic bronchitis goes untreated, the space in the lungs available for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide diminishes, the heart has to work harder to keep an adequate volume of blood. This can lead to heart disease. If caused by bacteria, antibiotics should be prescribed. Cough suppressants should not be used in the treatment. A chest X-ray should be taken to rule out lung cancer.
