ABOUT CARDIOMYOPATHY Cardiomyopathy means disease of the heart muscle. Cardiomyopathy damages the muscle tone of the heart and reduces its ability to pump blood to the rest of the body. Cardiomyopathy is dangerous because it often goes unrecognized and is untreated. It is also different from other heart problems because it often affects younger people and often results in sudden death. There are four types of heart muscle disease. dilated cardiomyopathy is the most common form of the disease. It affects the chambers of the heart by weakening their walls. In about 80% of cases doctors do not know the cause. This type of cardiomyopathy is called IDIOPATHIC DC Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the second most common form of the disease. It is usually an inherited disease that causes a thickening of the hearts walls. Restrictive cardiomyopathy is rare, it gets it name because the condition restricts the heart from stretching properly, which limits the amount of blood that can fill the chambers of the heart. CARDIOMYOPATHY by Malcolm Dupries Cardiomyopathy is a term used to describe a condition which occurs to the heart muscle, when one or more diseases cause inflammation and scarring. This inflammation and scarring causes an enlargement of the heart itself, and the chambers within the heart dilate and become less efficient in supplying the body and organs with blood. The end result of a dog suffering from this condition is that the heart muscle will eventually weaken and the dog will develop congestive heart failure, and will die. The articles that the author used in researching this condition stated that the reason dogs develop this condition is unknown, but assumed to be genetic. Exactly how it is inherited is not yet documented, however, the disease appears to be very breed specific. There are some mixed breeds of dogs that have been diagnosed with this condition, but it is extremely rare. The breeds of dog that have documented histories of cardiomyopathy are: Boxers, Cocker Spaniels, Doberman Pinschers, German Shepherd Dogs, Golden Retrievers, Great Danes, Irish Wolfhounds and Saint Bernards. Doberman Pinschers have been most often used in the medical research on this condition. It is important to realise that a dog does not react to illnesses like a human will. The clinical signs of a dog suffering from cardiomyopathy do not appear over a long period of time. The signs often appear over a few days, when in reality, the disease starts at an early age, between two and five years of age. Researchers have discovered that male dogs are asymtomatic until the disease becomes severe, sometime between five and eight years of age. Female dogs are often asymtomatic until they are between nine and twelve years of age. Once the clinical signs appear the dog may already be in the stage of severe heart failure.

Answer Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) are usually two seperate entities which can both cause shortness of breath. HCM is a term used to describe an abnormal thickening of the wall that separates the two main pumping chambers of the heart. There are different varieties, but they all have abnormal thickening of the heart wall in common. HCM is usually caused by a congenital misalignment of the muscle fibers which then causes the wall to eventually thicken. Depending upon where in the wall the thickening occurs, there can be an obstruction to the outflow of blood, which may then cause the shortness of breath and fatigue, but not always. Sometimes, people with HCM have abnormal heart rhythms, which can cause dizziness and are treated with antiarrhythmic medicines or an implanted defibrillator. There are other forms of HCM which are caused by such things as long-standing, poorly-controlled high blood pressure, or scarring and narrowing of the aortic valve. They involve an abnormal general thickening of the walls of the main pumping chamber (ventricle).
