Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS)
How Serious Are They?
Currently, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome affects over 8-million Americans, and is costing the private business sector, government agencies and insurance companies more than 20 billion dollars annually in workers compensation alone. The overall cost of treating these disorders exceeds 60 billion annually when considering the cost of implementing ergonomic products, rehabilitation, physician visits, surgery, lost time from work, temporary help and job retraining. Musculoskeletal disorders, including carpal tunnel syndrome, are among the most prevalent medical conditions in the U.S., affecting 7% of the population. They account for 14% of physician visits and 19% of hospital stays. 62% of the persons with musculoskeletal disorders report some degree of limitation on activity, compared with 14% of the population at large, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. REFERENCE MATERIALS:
  • The U.S. Department of Labor has concluded that Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is the "chief occupational hazard of the 90's"- disabling workers in epidemic proportions.

Computer Related Repetitive Strain Injury
"We pray with our hands and often communicate with them. We use them to eat, work, and make love. We employ them as marvelously sophisticated instruments of flexibility and strength, and when they are damaged, we anguish."
- Keith L. Moore, Clinically Oriented Anatomy As more and more work, education and recreation involves computers, everyone needs to be aware of the hazard of Repetitive Strain Injury to the hands and arms resulting from the use of computer keyboards and mice. This can be a serious and very painful condition that is far easier to prevent than to cure once contracted, and can occur even in young physically fit individuals. It is not uncommon for people to have to leave computer-dependent careers as a result, or even to be permanently disabled and unable to perform tasks such as driving or dressing themselves. I've faced this problem myself since March of 1994, and many friends are also affected to varying degrees. I am not a health care professional, but I hope on this page to provide a very brief introduction to RSI for the benefit of students who may not be aware of the potential for a life-altering injury. It includes book references and links to Internet resources that have been helpful in educating me about this. Don't hesitate to get in touch by e-mail, but because I have to limit my own computer use, please take the time to consult the entire page and the listed materials at length first.

  • Approximately 260,000 carpal tunnel release operations are performed each year and 47 percent of these are considered to be work-related. A 1999 study reported that 14% of the population surveyed complained of symptoms such as pain, numbness, and tingling in the hands, but only one in five of these people actually had CTS.
What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome? There is a nerve called the median nerve that travels from the forearm into your hand through a "tunnel" in your wrist. Wrist bones form the bottom and sides of this tunnel; a ligament covers the top of the tunnel. This tunnel also contains nine tendons that connect muscles to bones and bend your fingers and thumb. These tendons are covered with a lubricating membrane called synovium, which may enlarge and swell under some circumstances. This swelling may cause the median nerve to be pressed up against this strong ligament which may result in numbness, tingling in your hand, clumsiness or pain.

What Is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Carpal tunnel syndrome is one of a group of disorders categorized by several different terms: repetitive stress injuries, cumulative trauma disorder, overuse syndromes, chronic upper limb pain syndrome, or repetitive motion disorders. All of these problems are generally associated with repetitive and forceful use of the hands that damage muscles and bones of the upper extremities.
What Causes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Work-Related Causes.
Disorders related to work that requires repetitive motion are increasing. They account for nearly half of all reported work-related illness, and carpal tunnel syndrome is estimated to account for over 41% of these repetitive motion disorders. Researchers have defined six key risk factors in the workplace for the development of these disorders, including carpal tunnel syndrome: (1) repetition, (2) high force, (3) awkward joint posture, (4) direct pressure, (5) vibration, and (6) prolonged constrained posture. Some experts believe that incorrect posture may play a large role in the development of CTS, particularly in people who work at computer and other types of keyboards. The tendency to roll the shoulders forward, round the lower back, and thrust the chin forward can shorten the neck and shoulder muscles, compressing nerves in the neck. This, in turn, can affect the wrist, fingers, and hand. It has been difficult, however, to obtain reliable data on the direct link between repetitive hand and wrist tasks and carpal tunnel syndrome.

Welcome to Bodymindresources.com’s class on Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Today we will be discussing the anatomical occurrence of carpal tunnel syndrome in the wrists, what we can do to prevent it and treat it. Let’s begin. What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a condition that occurs when too much pressure is placed on the median nerve as it passes through the carpal tunnel. The carpal tunnel is a small passageway through which the median nerve, as well as the tendons that operate the thumb and fingers must pass. The location of the carpal tunnel is right at the base of the palm and wrist and it creates a tight fit even in a healthy structure. Sometimes, through repetitive and improper use of the hand and wrist, the tendons can become inflamed. When the tendons swell within the tight carpal tunnel, there is no longer enough room for everything to fit comfortably and this places pressure on the median nerve. This pressure creates tingling and loss of feeling in the hand. It can also inhibit your ability to pinch you thumb to your fingers.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a group of symptoms in the hand which arise from pressure on one of the nerves that passes through the palm side of the wrist. Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when tendons in the wrist become inflamed after being aggravated. It is treated by immobilizing the wrist in a splint to minimize or prevent pressure on the nerves.

Preventing and healing*
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
by Ellen Serber
illustrations by Daniel Will-Harris Carpal tunnel syndrome and repetitive stress disorders are preventable. The best possible scenario is never to develop symptoms, to work intelligently and to respect your body's needs. But if trouble does begin it is extremely important to act immediately, before the symptoms become a big problem. Pain and burning are the #1 indicators that something is wrong. The discomfort and pain can be in your fingers, hand, wrist, forearm, elbow, shoulder, neck, upper back or lower back. It is much better to take these preventative steps while you are pain-free, instead of waiting for major dysfunction. And if you are experiencing symptoms, you should see a health care professional immediately. Checklist for Prevention: The most important thing to do is to get up from your desk and move around every 1/2 hour. Take your eyes off your computer screen and gaze into the far distance. Drink a glass of water. Some computers have alarm clock functions which can be set to remind you to get up. If you don't have such a function there are shareware programs you can download which will act as a timer (there are many to choose from, go to www.shareware.com
