The Cerebral Palsy Association is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for those with cerebral palsy. Its Board of Directors meets once a month to promote programs and services for those with cerebral palsy in the community. And is available for people with cerebal-palsey and other medical conditions. The broad term "cerebral palsy" (C.P.) means damage to the brain resulting in inability to control muscles normally. The term cerebral refers to the brain and palsy (paralysis) is used to express the central nervous system damage which results in many gra des and kinds of muscle and sensory difficulties. Cerebral Palsy is not a disease, but a condition that most often occurs before, during, or shortly after birth. Usually it is because the supply of oxygen to the brain has been interrupted.

Children with Cerebral Palsy often do not grow the same as other children. Children with CP are often shorter and thinner than other children of the same age. We do not know if this is "normal," or if there could be a problem with nutrition or hormones, and so we are interested in discovering what is "just right" for a child with CP. The first step in understanding growth in Cerebral Palsy is to measure a large group of children with CP. This study is under way in six different medical centers in the United States and Canada. The words Cerebral Palsy are used to describe a medical condition that affects control of the muscles. Cerebral means anything in the head and palsy refers to anything wrong with control of the muscles or joints in the body. If someone has cerebral palsy it means that because of an injury to their brain (that's the cerebral part) they are not able to use some of the muscles in their body in the normal way (that's the palsy part). Children who have cerebral palsy, or CP, may not be able to walk, talk, eat or play in the same ways as most other kids.
It is important to know that CP is not a disease or illness. It isn't contagious and it doesn't get worse, but it is not something you "grow out of." Children who have CP will have it all their lives.

WHO WE ARE Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a medical treatment that saturates the body with 100% oxygen under pressure. In this way, the cells of the body become saturated with oxygen at 10-15 times greater than they would under ambient pressure. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy promotes the growth of new capillaries, reduces swelling, and enhances the bodies ability to fight off infection. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is beneficial in treating non healing wounds, severe burns, and many neurologic and orthopedic conditions. Patients with paralysis from strokes, closed head trauma, cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis have had remarkable improvement in strength and function with hyperbarics. There has been an acceleration in the healing of crush injuries, sports injuries as well as skin grafts. SPECIALTIES We specialize in dealing with patients with paralysis associated with prior strokes, cerebral palsy, and multiple sclerosis. We have a special interest in treating patients with diabetic foot ulcers, poor healing wounds, diabetic peripheral neuropathy and recent skin grafts or plastic surgery

-Walter Dean Myers Our family 1996
Kimberly 6 months Kimberly Noelle Born March 8 1996, Kim came to us not by stork but by airplane from Wash DC. She was met at the airport by her new family - Brenda, Steve, and big brother Myles.
Grammy and Grandad were there too and as Myles says "Mom and Grammy were bawling and the men were taking pictures!". At birth she weighed 2 pounds 12 ounces and stayed in the hospital for 7 weeks to gain weight and then was in a foster home for about 3 weeks while our paperwork was processed. She was so tiny and slept a LOT!
Little did we know how this beautiful baby would change all of our lives! Kimberly had been born 10 weeks premature and at her first pediatric visit the doctor said she didn't seem to have any of the common problems that preemies often face. We felt very blessed. Then at 6 months old Kim's eyes began crossing and she had the first of two surgeries to correct it. At this time mom began to have the feeling that there was more to come. After being assured by the doc's that she would "catch up in a couple of years" Kim was diagnosed at 15 months with Periventricular Leukomalacia. In her case the PVL also caused Cerebral Palsy. Since then we have learned, laughed, cried, and loved her more than we ever thought possible. She is teaching us what matters most in life.

    Cerebral Palsy and Motor Delay
Cerebral palsy is one of the most common causes of chronic childhood disability, occuring in 1.4-2.7% births. Improved survival of extremely preterm infants may be increasing the number of children diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Between 5 and 8 percent of infants weighing less than 3 pounds (1,500 grams) at birth develop cerebral palsy (primarily diplegic cerebral palsy); they are 25 times more likely to develop cerebral palsy than infants who are bornfull term. However, preemies still constitute a small minority of the overall number of children with cerebral palsy. Cerebral Palsy Articles Cerebral Palsy and Premature Infants and Children
