The word Psittacosis comes from the Greek word Psittakos, meaning parrot. Chlamydia are gram negative, spherical, (0.4-0.6 micron diameter), intracellular parasites that people sometimes referred to as "energy parasites" because they use ATP (a crucial energy containing metabolite) produced by the host cell, hence, the term "energy parasites. Incubation periods in caged birds vary from days to weeks and longer. Most commonly this period is approximately 3 to 10 days. Latent infections are common and active disease may occur several years after exposure. The incubation period of this disease is however difficult to assess due to these chronically infected birds that develop persistent, asymptomatic infections.

The Facts About...
Chlamydia trachomatis
What is Chlamydia trachomatis?
Chlamydia trachomatis is a small bacterium that cannot grow outside a living cell. In this respect it resembles a virus, but it is actually a very sophisticated organism. There are two other related organisms: Chlamydia psittaci is widespread in animals and can be transmitted to humans. This organism in humans is an uncommon cause of severe pneumonia particularly when acquired from infected birds of the parrot (Psittacine) family, and occasionally of abortion following contact with infected sheep. The more recently described Chlamydia pneumoniae (also known as the TWAR agent - Taiwan Acute Respiratory, after the designations of the first two isolates), may prove to be a frequent cause of upper and lower respiratory infection transmitted from person to person by infected droplets.
Which diseases does it cause?
Worldwide, the most important disease caused by Chlamydia trachomatis is trachoma, one of the commonest infectious causes of blindness. In some parts of the developing world, over 90% of the population becomes infected. However, the specific strains of Chlamydia trachomatis which cause trachoma and the epidemiological conditions for its spread, are not found in the UK. In Britain, the organism often causes genital tract infection. In men

CHLAMYDIA
What is Chlamydia?
Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection caused by bacteria. It is estimated that chlamydia is the most prevalent STD with 3 - 4 million new cases each year. Rates of chlamydia are highest in the West and Midwest, with Missouri seeing numbers much greater than the national average.
How is it Spread?
Chlamydia is spread by direct person-to-person contact. It is almost always transmitted through sexual contact. It is also possible for pregnant women to pass the bacteria to their infant during birth.
How Do I Know if I am Infected?
Because symptoms are not always present, you may be infected with chlamydia and not know it. You can be tested for chlamydia and other sexually transmitted diseases at Student Health Services. To test for chlamydia, the physician will use a cotton swab to collect cells from your genitals.
What are the Symptoms?
If present, symptoms may appear in a week to a month after infection. Seventy-five percent of persons with chlamydia may show no symptoms. Men are more likely than women to show signs of infection. Chlamydia in Men
  • Painful urination
  • Mild, sticky, milky or mucus-like discharge from penis

Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, and Syphilis Chlamydia Chlamydia is the most prevalent STD in the U.S. It is most common among people in their late teens and early twenties and can coexist with gonorrhea and other STDs. It is estimated that one in five college students are infected with Chlamydia. The infection is most commonly transmitted through sexual intercourse. Babies can also be infected while passing through the birth canal of an infected mother. If Chlamydia is left untreated, women can develop Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) . There is also an increased danger of having an ectopic pregnancy if Chlamydia is left untreated.
People with Chlamydia do not necessarily know that they are infected. Sixty to eighty percent of women and ten percent of men who have Chlamydia exhibit no symptoms. In women, symptoms include: genital itching and burning, vaginal discharge, dull pelvic pain, bleeding between periods, and cervical inflammation. In men, symptoms include: mucus discharge from the penis (gradual onset five to twenty-one days after exposure) and painful urination. Again, these symptoms may be so mild that a man may not notice them. Treatment with an antibiotic is usually successful. Some people choose to be retested after the course of treatment has been completed. Testing for Chlamydia is performed at the Health Center free on request.

Transmission and Infection
The two routes of transmission of psittacosis are respiratory and oral. Respiratory transmission insides the inhalation of infected particles of fecal, ocular, nasal, and respiratory discharges, and feather dust. Oral transmission includes the ingestion of food and water contaminated with Chlamydia bearing feces Parents that are carriers can infect their nestling via the regurgitated food they feed the babies A prior infection of psittacosis does not guarantee the bird is immune from reinfection. Due to the fact that C. psittaci lives "inside" the cells of its host it does not stimulate high production of antibodies against Chlamydia

Chlamydia pneumoniae Causes Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm
Antibodies to Chlamydia pneumoniae are rarely found in children less than five years old; the primary infection usually occurs between ages 8 and 16. Reinfections occur throughout childhood, and the rate of infection is higher among men than women. In non-elderly people it causes mild respiratory symptoms, but may cause pneumonia in the elderly. Indications of the presence of Chlamydia pneumoniae have been found in the majority of studies which have looked for them. C pneumoniae was found in 11/25 aortas, 5/9 iliac arteries, 2/5 femoral arteries, and 1/2 iliac veins, by PCR in AAA specimens. It was also seen in vascular tissue from 3/6 "ostensibly normal" liver transplant donors, which showed some atherosclerotic changes. "The figures are perhaps conservative as it is possible that more specimens would be found to be C pneumoniae positive if a larger amount of tissue was examined." J Clin Pathol 1996 Feb;49(2):102-106).

Did you know that.... Chlamydia is the most commonly reported infectious disease in the United States and may be one of the mot dangerous sexually transmitted diseases among women today.
(Tracking the Hidden Epidemics: Trends in STDs in the U.S. 2000 (CDC) ) In 1999 Chlamydia positivity among 15 to 30 year old women screened at clinics in four IHS regions ranged from 5.4% to 10.8% (DHHS, IHS 1999) Approximately 75% of women and 50% of men with Chlamydia are asymptomatic. Most Chlamydia infections among women are detected through screening tests during a routine medical visit (i.e., family planning, prenatal care, and annual Pap test visit). According to the CDC:
  • up to 40% of women with untreated Chlamydia will develop Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID). Of those with PID, approximately 20% will become infertile;

Ency. home Disease C Chlamydia Overview Symptoms Treatment Prevention Definition: A sexually-transmitted disease caused by the bacteria Chlamydia trachomatis. Causes and Risks Chlamydia infection is caused by the organism Chlamydia trachomatis . It is the most common sexually-transmitted disease in the United States. Sexually active individuals and individuals with multiple partners are at highest risk. Chlamydia may be acquired jointly with gonorrhea and/or syphilis so individuals with one sexually transmitted disease must be screened for other sexually transmitted diseases as well. Untreated chylamidia can lead to pelvic infection and infertility. In men, chlamydia may produce symptoms similar to those of gonorrhea (discharge from penis or rectum, burning on urination or defecation), and can also cause epididymitis and orchitis . However, up to 25% of infected men may have no symptoms.
Chlamydia (female)
: only approximately 30% of women will have symptoms due to chlamydia hence screening sexually active women for chlamydia is necessary to diagnose and treat asymptomatic women in order to decrease the risk of developing complications. Women who do have symptoms may note vaginal discharge, burning on urination, or abdominal pain. Untreated infection may lead to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) which can cause scarring of the Fallopian tubes and result in infertility . Tubal scarring also increases the likelihood of an

Colposcopy Cryotherapy Pap Smears Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) What is Chlamydia? Chlamydia is a bacterial infection of the genito-urinary tract in men and women. Chlamydia is acquired through sexual intercourse with an infected partner and is, therefore, considered a sexually transmitted disease. Chlamydia is the most common bacterial sexually transmitted disease in the U.S. It is a major cause of female infertility when untreated. What are the symptoms? Infection of the urethra in men, called urethritis, may cause burning with urination, a urethral discharge, and pain and swelling in the testicles; however, six out of ten men may have no symptoms Urethritis in women may also cause burning with urination. Infection of the cervix, called cervicitis, may cause a heavy vaginal discharge or vaginal bleeding. Infection of the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries (called pelvic inflammatory disease), may cause pelvic pain. Spotting between periods may also indicate an infection of the uterus. Nine out of ten women may have no symptoms ; nonetheless, treatment is necessary to prevent the spread of infection and to prevent the possible complications of tubal scarring and subsequent infertility.
