Chlamydia Chlamydia Defined
Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) that is caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. Because approximately 75% of women and 50% of men have no symptoms, most people infected with chlamydia are not aware of their infections and therefore may not seek health care. How Common Is Chlamydia?
Chlamydia is the most frequently reported infectious disease in the United States. It is estimated that there are more than 3 million people are infected each year. However, since this disease does not produce symptoms and people are not routinely screened, many cases go unreported. As many as 1 in 10 adolescent girls tested for chlamydia is infected. Based on reports to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provided by states that collect age-specific data, teenage girls have the highest rates of chlamydial infection. In these states, 15- to 19-year-old girls represent 46% of infections and 20- to 24-year-old women represent another 33%. These high percentages are consistent with high rates of other STDs among teenagers. Treated Versus Untreated Chlamydia
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease and Tubal Pregnancies
When diagnosed, chlamydia can be easily treated and cured. Untreated, chlamydia can cause severe reproductive and other health problems. Women who have chlamydia are at risk for developing pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which can cause infertility. Chalmydia can also cause women who become pregnant to develop a potentially fatal tubal pregnancy.

Dr Marie Stopes 1880-1958 - a remarkable woman If Marie Stopes was alive and working today, she would be seen as a remarkable woman - a passionate pioneer for women's rights, a brilliant speaker and a skilled self-publicist, capable of pulling off extraordinary stunts to attract the media. To really understand her, however, it's important to realise she was a woman ahead of her time. When she became a public figure in the 1920s, England was still emerging from the shadow of Queen Victoria. Women had only just got the vote, very few went to university, modesty prevailed and sexual matters were never discussed. Marie Stopes was far from conventional. Not only did she go to university, but she got a double first, studied in Germany and gained a doctorate. She even went down coalmines to pursue her specialist subject - fossilised plants.

Fight Against 'Silent' STD Includes New Screening Test, One-Dose Drug
by Tamar Nordenberg Anna Lange (not her real name) had no symptoms when she went to a Wake County, N.C., sexually transmitted diseases clinic earlier this year to pick up her birth control pills. But a routine test revealed that the 20-year-old Lange had chlamydia. "She came in and had no complaints," says Peter Leone, M.D., the clinic's medical director, "and then 'boom'she was diagnosed with a sexually transmitted disease." The sexually transmitted disease chlamydia usually comes with no telltale symptoms, so most people don't even know when they are infected. But left untreated, the so-called "silent epidemic" of chlamydia threatens to cause reproductive damage and infertility in many of the 3 million to 4 million Americans who get it each year. "Chlamydia's consequences can be devastating," says Diane Mitchell, M.D., an obstetrician-gynecologist and medical reviewer with the Food and Drug Administration. Routine chlamydia screening and early, effective treatment are the keys to reducing chlamydia's toll, according to Penny Hitchcock, chief of the National Institutes of Health's sexually transmitted disease branch. Two recent medical advances, she says, constitute "very important breakthroughs" in controlling the rampant disease: a new drug treatment recently approved by FDA to cure chlamydia in a single oral dose, and a urine-based screening test that, unlike other tests, does not require a swab sample of cells from the genital area.

Definition: A sexually transmitted disease caused by the bacteria Chlamydia trachomatis
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Chlamydia infection is caused by the organism Chlamydia trachomatis . It is the most common sexually transmitted disease in the United States. Sexually active individuals and individuals with multiple partners are at highest risk. Chlamydia may be acquired jointly with gonorrhea and/or syphilis, so individuals with one sexually transmitted disease must be screened for other sexually transmitted diseases as well. Untreated chlamydia can lead to pelvic infection and infertility. In men, chlamydia may produce symptoms similar to those of gonorrhea (discharge from penis or rectum, burning on urination or defecation), and can also cause

What's New Message Boards Tools and Quizzes Experts Services Free Newsletters Pregnancy Parenting Health iVillage News more newsletters Chlamydia and fertility by Dr Howard Lee I have been trying to get pregnant for nine months with no success. I am 30 and my husband is 35. Approximately seven years ago, before I met my husband, I was diagnosed with STD Chlamydia. The symptoms were 'a discharge and unpleasant odour'. I was prescribed antibiotics, but foolishly stopped taking them when the symptoms disappeared (probably only half the prescribed course). I then got on with my life and the symptoms never returned so I never went back to the clinic. About 18 months ago and while I was still on the Pill, I started having slight spotting (breakthrough bleeding). It usually happened a couple of days after my period. I visited my GP and, although she changed my contraceptive Pill twice, it still happened. I have now been off the pill for nine months and I still get the breakthrough, which has now happened mid-cycle along with a tingling/smarting sensation, which isn't going away. I'm worried that I've still got the chlamydia, or that it could now be PID - Pelvic Inflammatory Disease.

Chlamydia
Chlamydia is one of the most common, and rapidly spreading, STDs. It is also one that most people are barely aware of. This is about to change. Postcards, TV ads and even a website are about to inform students of the dangers and of the need for safe sex.
The danger of chlamydia is that it has no obvious symptoms. Yet left untreated it can cause women to develop pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility or ectopic pregnancy. It currently affects around one in 14 people, and is most common among 16-24 year-olds. It is spreading at a startling rate. More than 25 000 new cases were reported in 1998.
The sexual behaviour of young people is likely to be one of the primary causes of the disease's frequency among this age group. A recent ICM study of 19-23 year olds showed that 76% had had unprotected sex.
The Health Education Authority describe this campaign as "ground-breaking." It features two misshapen cartoon characters, Clem and Lydia, who suggest that you "Stay lucky" and direct you to the "lovelife website," which has highly disturbing animations. The postcard is clearly about sex, but there is little other clue about its message. Perhaps curious readers are expected to rush straight to their computers to find out what these creatures in fishnets and badly-fitting clothes are all about. It is perhaps a slight improvement on the previous postcard, featuring the immortal lines, "When my boyfriend told me he had Chlamydia, I said, "Who's Chlamydia?"
I put my queries to Katherine Evans, of the Health Education Authority. She described the postcards as a "teaser campaign to get people interested". So yes, people are expected to go and sample the excitements of the website immediately. And to watch the television ads, which began this week and will continue for a month, with avid interest.
