Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and its Connection to ADD/ADHD
Preface
After many delays, and revisions, this manuscript represents an attempt to summarize much of the background and current literature to date regarding this confusing phenomenon we call CFS/CFIDS and its potential connection to ADHD in children (and adults).
In writing this, I am attempting to help physicians, patients, educators and others further understand this complex phenomenon. I have attempted to separate what is "accepted" and/or verified by literature publications, versus my "opinions" and "positions."
To all of you reading this, I hope this helps add some insight and understanding of the complex epiphenomena. To all of you who may have and are suffering with this illness, I hope you will soon see an acceleration of our clinical knowledge, such that successful treatment protocols are available in the near future for all.
The question is often asked, "What can be done as patients." With recognition by our medical establishment of the legitimacy of this problem, they are encouragingly on a path to find answers to verify or disprove clinical opinions and further basic science, with an attitude significantly different from even a year ago. This author believes the critical need for patients (via hopefully corporate or private funding sources) is to accelerate steps that will "jump-start" controlled therapies, while our medical establishment searches for all the scientific answers.

Executive Summary
The term Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) refers to a symptom complex of marked and prolonged fatigue for which no identifiable cause can be found. Other symptoms frequently present include generalised muscle weakness and pain, low-grade fever, sore throat, painful lymph nodes in the neck and armpits, exacerbation of fatigue after moderate or strenuous exercise for periods of 24 hours or more, transient pains in a number of joints, and various disturbances of neuropsychological function including confusion, irritability, poor concentration and visual changes. Despite the range of other symptoms being extensive, none are essential for the diagnosis to be made in the presence of profound fatigue of 6 months or more duration. Chronic fatigue syndrome is frequently seen in association with psychiatric illnesses such as depression and anxiety but has not been shown to be causally related to any particular psychiatric disease.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS; CFIDS; M.E.) is a disorder characterized by extreme exhaustion, muscle pain, cognitive problems and a number of other physical symptoms. The similarities in symptoms and research findings between CFS and Fibromyalgia (FMS; FM) have led many researchers and clinicians to link the two syndromes, although others believe them to be quite distinct. Current thinking is that CFS probably begins with a genetic predisposition, and is triggered by exposure to a number of possible stressors - including viruses, bacteria such as mycoplasma, allergies, chemical toxins and other physical and emotional stressors. Once triggered, CFS appears to involve dysfunctions of both the immune system and neuroendocrine system (which regulates interaction between the nervous system and the hormones of the endocrine glands).

CFS is characterised by overwhelming tiredness
Chronic fatigue syndrome is a condition with a diverse range of symptoms but particularly characterised by profound and persistent tiredness. Formerly known as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) it is often viewed as a new disease but doctors now believe it has been around for decades. When ME was first outlined as a condition in the 1980s many doctors were sceptical about whether it was a real condition or "all in the mind". Medical experts have now developed a list of criteria which identify chronic fatigue syndrome. How do I know I have CFS? One in five people consulting their GP report chronic tiredness but only a small proportion of these have CFS. The main feature of CFS is overwhelming tiredness which disrupts the ability to carry out normal activities. The US Center for Disease Control has developed a list of diagnostic criteria for the condition.

Tennis elbow and its cousin, golfer's elbow, are not just for tennis and golf players. They can affect anyone who engages in repetitive movements, even away from the court or the green. Repetitive motion tends to weaken the tendons in the elbow area, making them prone to tearing. With tennis elbow, it's the tendon on the outside of the elbow that is damaged. With golfer's elbow, it's the tendon on the inside of the elbow. In both cases, the person feels pain in the elbow area and often has difficult performing such simple tasks as gripping a coffee cup or extending the forearm fully.

    SUMMARY
A cluster of canine Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) was diagnosed according to current criteria accepted in human medicine. The fatigue and pain symptoms were associated with pyoderma, presence of micrococci-like organisms in the blood and the recovery of two vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus xilosus strains, from a pustule and from drinking water. Thiacetarsamide sodium, was administered intravenously at low dosage (0.1 mg/Kg/day) for three days in all dogs. Clinical and hematological parameters at days 4, 7 and 10 after therapy confirmed complete remission from the syndrome, which had lasted for more than 2 years and had been treated previously with several chemotherapeutics agents. The possible role of coagulase-negative staphylococci in the aetiology of CFS and the antimicrobial action of arsenicals are discussed. Key-words: Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, CFS, thiacetarsamide, dog, zoonosis.

One woman's fight against pain by Michael Braunstein
When it's time for a change in our life, we can usually rely on some simple signs to tell us. Many times we don't listen. Many times we miss rather obvious signs. Sometimes we simply refuse to change, no matter how obvious the signs become. In Alcoholics Anonymous, a common phrase heard in meetings is "Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired?" It's also common in AA circles to note that when a person finally makes major lifestyle changes such as becoming sober and ending a period of self-destructive drinking that it usually happens when they have "hit the bottom of the barrel," their lowest point. All that simply means is that the signs became so obvious that they had to make a change. The handwriting was on the wall. Of course it's always possible to ignore the obvious. Foolishness is always an option. The result is that change becomes more and more difficult to initiate and we may become trapped in our reality and eventually forget that we have the power to do something about it.
It wasn't alcoholism that was the writing on the wall for Mary Moeller. It was something different, something that was with her for every minute of every day and night for nearly 30 years. Mary Moeller lived with the constant pain of fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. What really brought it home for her was that her 8 year-old daughter was beginning to show the symptoms too. Sick and tired of feeling sick and tired, Moeller helped herself and helped her daughter by developing a program of lifestyle changes that left both her and her daughter symptom-free. That was four years ago. Since then, she has changed careers and changed focus, started doing workshops and has written a book to help others with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS.)

“It seems to correct certain subtle metabolic abnormalities that are seen with people who have CFS."
    Dr. Richard Podell on Ampligen
(CBS) Were it not for an intravenous line and the drug it pumps into her body, Joan Friedman would know no life outside her home. In 1994, she developed what she thought was a bad case of the flu - but she never got better. She was later diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that between 500,000 and a million people in the U.S. have chronic fatigue syndrome. Certain antidepressants and anti-inflammatory drugs have been found effective in managing the symptoms of CFS, but there is no known cure for this debilitating disease.
"You forget the meaning of common words. You are spaciously disoriented, you don't know where you are," Joan explains. But things have changed significantly for Joan. She’s now self-sufficient, and she credits the experimental drug Ampligen for her remarkable turnaround. The drug is now in the final testing stages here in the U.S., and so far researchers like what they see.

What is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or ME? Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is a serious and complex illness characterised by incapacitating fatigue (experienced as profound exhaustion and extremely poor stamina), neurological problems and certain other symptoms.  By definition the condition does not improve with rest and persists for a minimum of 6 months.  In many cases it lasts for years and severely impairs a person's ability to function. CFS is also known as Tapanui Flu, Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction syndrome (CFIDS) and myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME). What are the main symptoms of CFS? The hallmark of the disorder is the onset of fatigue that significantly reduces daily activity in a previously healthy person. Other characteristic symptoms include: - impaired memory or concentration; sore throat, tender lymph nodes, muscle pain, multi joint pain without joint swelling or redness; headaches of a new type, pattern or severity; unrefreshing sleep and post-extertional malaise lasting more than 24 hours.
