QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
ABOUT THE PROBLEM OF COMPULSIVE GAMBLING
AND THE G.A. RECOVERY PROGRAM
What is compulsive gambling?
The explanation that seems most acceptable to Gamblers Anonymous members is that compulsive gambling is an illness, progressive in its nature, which can never be cured, but can be arrested.
Before coming to Gamblers Anonymous, many compulsive gamblers thought of themselves as morally weak, or at times just plain 'no good'. The Gamblers Anonymous concept is that compulsive gamblers are really very sick people who can recover if they will follow to the best of their ability a simple program that has proved successful for thousands of other men and women with a gambling or compulsive gambling problem.
What is the first thing a compulsive gambler ought to do in order to stop gambling?
The compulsive gambler needs to be willing to accept the fact that he or she is in the grip of a progressive illness and has a desire to get well. Our experience has shown that the Gamblers Anonymous program will always work for any person who has a desire to stop gambling. However, it will never work for the person who will not face squarely the facts about this illness.
How can you tell whether you are a compulsive gambler?

What is problem gambling?
Problem gambling refers to any gambling that goes beyond "normal" bounds of gambling for fun, recreation, or entertainment. Pathological gambling is the inability, over an extended period of time, to resist impulses to gamble. It is often characterized by increasing preoccupation with gambling and a general loss of control. Pathological gamblers often "chase" their losses, feel a need to bet more frequently and in larger amounts, and continue to gamble in spite of the serious negative consequences of their behavior. Are pathological gambling and compulsive gambling the same thing?

Someone may have a gambling problem when:
  • Time spent gambling is out of proportion with the person's other activities. Showing special excitement in going to new gambling spots or rearranging schedules to permit more time for gambling activities. Feeling that a change in gambling activities will bring good luck. Size of bets increase. This is often a sign of chasing losing bets and trying to catch up. The onset of the compulsion to gamble is apparent by the person's tendency to place larger bets and bet more frequently. Boasting about winning and minimizing losses are prime signs of compulsive gambling. The need for recognition and displays of power are often so important that compulsive gamblers flaunt possession of large amounts of money. Social gamblers may talk about their winnings, but not to the extent that they need to relive the win. Gambling when faced with a crisis. Unexplained absences from work, home or other responsibilities, particularly if the person conceals or attempts to conceal how his or her time is spent. Spending an excessive amount of time on the telephone. This can be an especially strong indicator if the gambler is secretive about the nature of those conversations.

36. What Is Compulsive Gambling
compulsive gambling is recognised as a mental disorder, and is characterisedby a chronic and progressive failure to resist the impulse to gamble.
http://www.gamblingproblem.co.nz/whatisgam.htm
New Zealanders have a reputation as some of the world's heaviest gamblers. Gambling, a tradition in New Zealand, has gained strength over the last decade through the rapid growth and expansion of the gambling industry. For many people gambling is an enjoyable recreational activity. For some, it may be once a year on Melbourne Cup Day, but for many, it is a normal part of their week's activity. Those who have serious interest in gambling usually devote a great deal of money and time to it.
Some people find that gambling becomes a serious problem which they are unable to control. This is known as 'compulsive' or 'pathological' gambling. Compulsive gambling is recognised as a mental disorder, and is characterised by a chronic and progressive failure to resist the impulse to gamble. It involves gambling behaviour that compromises, disrupts or damages personal, family, or vocational pursuits. It is known to increase during times of stress, and can lead to problems such as disrupted family relationships, inattention to work, financial crises and criminal activity in order to obtain money. These problems in turn lead to a further intensification of the gambling behaviour. Compulsive gamblers often believe that money causes, and at the same time is the solution to all their problems. They make no serious attempt to budget or save money, and are often over-confident, very energetic, easily bored and often "big spenders". There are times when they show signs of personal stress, anxiety and depression. In fact, many compulsive gamblers report boredom/depression or stress as the main reasons for their gambling.

About Compulsive Gambling
Compulsive gambling is the obvious symptom of an emotional disorder. The emotional factors involved are: inability or unwillingness to accept reality, emotional insecurity, basic immaturity, and lack of self-esteem. The gambler finds that he or she is most comfortable when gambling. Many psychiatrists feel that the gambler has an underlying need for self-destruction. Compulsive gambling brings despair and humiliation into the lives of countless thousands of men, women and children. The compulsive gambler is a person who is dominated by an irresistible urge to gamble. Coupled with this is the obsessive idea that a way will be found not only to control the gambling, but to "make it pay" and enjoy it besides. This disease causes deterioration in almost all areas of the person's life. To contact Gamblers Anonymous write to:
