compulsive gambling is defined as an impulsive need to gamble; itis usually a progressive illness that won't go away by itself.
http://www.gaming.state.co.us/probgamb.htm
Compulsive or Problem Gambling
A "problem gambler" is someone whose gambling has caused growing or continuing problems in his or her own life. Gambling can be a "self-medication" in much the same way and drugs and alcohol can be. Most problem gamblers suffer from varying degrees of depression, and the gambling activity redirects the gambler's attention from the gambler's personal problems, temporarily "treats" the depression, and creates at least a little excitement in the gambler's life. "Compulsive gambling" is defined as an impulsive need to gamble; it is usually a progressive illness that won't go away by itself. But as with problem drinking, recovery is possible if the gambler follows a treatment program. Experts have estimated that as many as twelve people - family, friends, employers, and others - are directly affected in a negative way when one individual becomes addicted to gambling. When dramatic stories about lives shattered by gambling make media headlines, entire communities can be changed by the experience. In December, 1997, a study was released by the Harvard Medical School Division on Addictions. The study showed that while the majority of Americans and Canadians gamble with little or no adverse consequence, the percentage of adults with gambling disorders in the United States and Canada has risen dramatically in the past twenty years, and the percentage of teenagers with gambling disorders is significantly higher than that of adults. The study was funded by the

http://www.rimrock.org/html/gambling.htm
Compulsive Gambling is a progressive behavior disorder in which an individual has an uncontrollable preoccupation and urge to gamble despite negative consequences. Gamblers gamble because they love to gamble. They love it more than spouse, child, mother, or material gain. They are addicted to the excitement and risk created by the gambling situation. So strong is the attachment to gambling that the urge to gamble becomes stronger than the desire for food, sex, or social esteem. Compulsive gambling is driven by an uncontrollable impulse to take risks that eventually undermines everything else in the gambler's life. Playing for ever-increasing stakes, the compulsive gambler often will resort to illegal activities to obtain money, and is more likely than any other addict to become suicidal. The very nature of the high tension associated with constant risk-taking leads to physical illness. Our program is tailored to meet the special needs of compulsive gamblers and their families. We provide a warm, caring, non-judgmental approach to treatment in a safe environment. The Program
Treatment for pathological gambling is offered on both an intensive outpatient and inpatient basis, depending upon the severity of the problem and other criteria.

Compulsive Gambling This purpose of this web page is to provide general information on issues related to gambling, but is not meant to replace consultation with a mental health professional. If you are concerned about compulsive gambling in your own life, or that of another, please feel free to contact the FSAP office to set up an appointment. What is compulsive gambling? For most people, gambling is fun and exciting, but simply a form of entertainment. For others, gambling becomes an addiction known as compulsive gambling. For the compulsive gambler, the urge to gamble tends to grow stronger over time, while the negative results of the gambling grow worse. Once addicted, the compulsive gambler will risk finances, health, home, and family in order to keep gambling. Compulsive gambling has been called the "hidden addiction" because even though gambling can be psychologically devastating, there are no obvious physical signs of addiction. Many gamblers need help in recognizing the signs of compulsive gambling. Often the spouse, friends and employer of the compulsive gambler recognize the problems and seek help before the gambler does. How can you tell if someone has a gambling problem?
