(Text Only Version) Contraceptive Choices What is contraception?
Contraception means prevention of pregnancy. There are a number of different methods of contraception, but not all are suitable for everyone. Using a method you are happy with means you will be able to relax and enjoy sex, without the worry of an unintended pregnancy.
When choosing contraception you should consider:
  • its effectiveness your lifestyle ease of use side effects cost and availability reversibility protection against sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
The effectiveness of all contraception depends upon correct and consistent use. Talking with Family Planning Queensland (FPQ) or your doctor about all methods will ensure that you have enough information to choose the one that suits you best.
Combined Oral Contraceptive Pill (COC)
The COC is an oral contraceptive containing the hormones oestrogen and progestogen. These are similar to the hormones produced by the female body. The pill works by preventing the release of the ovum (egg).
It is available on prescription from your local FPQ clinic or doctor.

Health professionals have a major role in facilitating early access to emergency contraception (EC) to maximise its chance of effectiveness. Information and education about the method should be raised opportunistically in a range of reproductive, contraceptive and sexual health consultations. Research overseas has found that easy access to emergency contraception including keeping an emergency script or supply at home does not decrease the use of regular contraceptive methods.
Emergency contraception can be used following sexual contact where there is a risk of an unintended pregnancy. Indications include:
  • unprotected intercourse failure of a barrier method sexual assault potential pill failures recent use of suspected teratogens
Oral steroid emergency contraception
Levonorgestrel-only method

Levonorgestrel-only emergency contraception should be used as the method of choice unless a woman is considering insertion of an IUCD. A recent study has shown that this method is highly effective and has minimal side effects.

The Resource Guide for California
Second Edition
"Emergency contraception is a major advance in women's reproductive health. It's safe, it's effective - so why don't people know about it?"
- Belle Taylor-McGhee, Executive Director, CARAL The CARAL Pro-Choice Education Fund first published Emergency Contraception: the Resource Guide for California in 2000. At that time, only 1% of women in the United States had ever used emergency contraception. A year later, as we publish this Second Edition, not much has changed. Still only 1-2% of women in the United States have ever used emergency contraception, and many have still never heard of it. Yet emergency contraception could prevent up to 1.7 million unintended pregnancies in the United States each year.

The Charging Parties, female employees of Respondents, allege that Respondents have engaged in an unlawful employment practice in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended, 42 U.S.C. 2000e et seq. (Title VII). Specifically, Charging Parties challenge Respondents' failure to offer insurance coverage for the cost of prescription contraceptive drugs and devices.

Charging Party A, a registered nurse, began working for Respondent A in 1997. Respondent A also covers the cost of surgical means of contraception, namely vasectomies and tubal ligations. However, Respondent A's plan excludes coverage for prescription contraceptive drugs and devices, whether they are used for birth control or for other medical purposes.

Alert:
Emergency contraception, if taken within 72 hours of unprotected sexual intercourse can prevent a pregnancy from developing. However, some pharmacies refuse to stock this medication. Wal-Mart in the U.S. and Canada is probably the largest chain which have taken this stand. Also, some individual pharmacists refuse to dispense it on moral or religious grounds. Women who feel that they might wish to obtain this medication in the future because of rape or contraceptive failure might wish to determine, in advance of need, the nearest pharmacy which will supply them with the medication. Also, they might wish also to obtain a prescription from their physician, and perhaps even purchase the medication to have it on hand in case they need it. " The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has urged its members to offer prescriptions for emergency contraception during patients' regular checkups ."

BIRTH CONTROL Emergency Contraception: The Morning-After Pill What is it? Emergency contraception (also known as the morning-after pill) is a high dosage of the birth control pill. It is recommended to be used after sexual intercourse, over a period of 72 hours, to achieve the goal of preventing or ending pregnancy. There are three different ways birth control pills are currently being promoted for this use: progesterone alone, estrogen alone, or both of these artificial steroids together. These are the same steroids found in the typical birth control pill. Where did this idea come from? There is no such thing as a specific morning-after pill, but rather double doses (or more) of existing birth control pills. Though no testing has been done to confirm the safety of these large doses of birth control pills for women, the Food and Drug Administration has approved this use. How do emergency contraception/morning-after pills work? The emergency contraceptive/morning-after pill has three possible ways in which it can work:
  • Ovulation is inhibited, meaning the egg will not be released;
