Experiences
Recipes Who Runs All This? Links Welcome! I was first diagnosed with Crohn's Disease eight years ago and, being a teenager at the time, I found it difficult to talk to others about the disease that did not have it. I created this site as a place to share stories and information - for teens, by teens - with Crohn's Disease, Colitis, or IBS. Apparently I've made a big impact in my five years here. I'm glad to do what I can to make a difference.
On this page, I will post experiences we teens have had with the disease. Any advice you may wish to pass on to others is also welcome. Since most all of us follow special diets, there is a recipe section. I have tried many of the recipes listed here, and several have become my favorites. Try them and let me know what you think. Please keep in mind that all of our diets are different, so what works for someone else may not work for you.

http://www.medhelp.org/ccf/ibdqioh.htm
How to Choose a Doctor and Hospital
A surgeon who performs a complex procedure often, for example, has better success with it than a surgeon who does the same procedure only occasionally. The complication rate and the death rate for the same procedure may be many times higher at one hospital than another. Clearly the doctor and hospital that you choose have a direct impact on how well you do - especially when you need treatment for Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis. These two inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) affect more than 2 million Americans. An estimated 200,000 children under the age of 16 have IBD. Although there is currently no medical cure for these diseases, people with IBD can now enjoy more normal lives thanks to innovative treatments available at some medical centers. However, this is a complex disease that is not easily diagnosed or readily controlled by medications. It may require many operations, each more difficult than the last because of adhesions and obstructions that are caused by scar tissue from the earlier operation. Successful treatment, therefore, requires a medical team with expertise in treating the most difficult cases, and one that has experience with the full range of medical and surgical treatment options available. Choosing a doctor and a hospital for your treatment is one of the most important decisions of your life. No one has more at stake than you.

86. New Information On HRT: Risks Outweigh Benefits
to review your family history of such conditions as breast cancer, endometrial cancer, heart attacks, blood clots, colorectoal cancer and coronary heart disease
http://www.hrt-debate.com/
Experts estimate that 13.5 million women in the United States take hormones during and after menopause. Of those, almost 8 million take estrogen only, while about 6 million take a combination of estrogen and progestin.
Progestin has been used to counterbalance one of the known harmful effects of estrogen thought to be responsible for endometrial cancer.
That is, until the news broke in July of 2002. Two major studies revealed that the health risks of taking hormone replacements were now known to outweigh the benefits. One study, performed by the NIH Women's Health Initiative, also discovered that the risk of endometrial cancer was unaffected by hormone replacement therapy (HRT).
No one knows for sure how many women have abandoned hormone replacement prescribed to mitigate the discomfort of menopause. Or to stave off osteoporosis. Or to reduce their risk of various heart conditions and cancers.
What's a Woman To Do?
If you're confused about the research findings and are having trouble deciding what to do about your own health, follow these important steps: Find out all that you can about estrogen and other hormones. Read brochures and web sites published by reputable agencies.

88. Lowering Blood Pressure Through A Low Sodium Diet Or High Blood Pressure Diet
Neither of the two actually causes hypertension, but both contribute to heartdisease, which can aggravate hypertension, which makes heart disease worse.
http://www.living-with-hypertension.com/html/diet.php3
Lowering Blood Pressure Through a Low Sodium Diet
A high blood pressure diet isn't really a diet. Rather, it's learning how to avoid certain types of food that contribute to hypertension. Of course, as many of the foods you'll be avoiding cause weight gain, you might be able to lose weight while lowering blood pressure. Salty Stories
The human body needs less than a teaspoon of salt per day. The average American consumes anywhere between 2 to 4 teaspoons of salt per day—much of it hidden in processed or pre-packaged food. Excessive amounts of sodium in our diets accounts for many increases in blood pressure, and a low sodium diet is often the first suggestion doctors make when a patient has high blood pressure. We get most of our sodium through sodium chloride—good old table salt. Processed food is another source of sodium, and should be avoided if you're following a high blood pressure diet.
If you're wondering how to start a low sodium diet, many cookbooks are especially designed for people who need to restrict their salt intake. You can find low sodium recipes on-line, at the library, or through your local diabetes association.
Although this may look like a list of your favorite snack foods, it's also a list of foods to avoid if you suspect hypertension

http://www.detecting-hypertension.com/html/environment.php3
Systolic Blood Pressure and Diastolic Blood Pressure
Your heart expands and contracts as it pumps, changing your blood pressure. When it beats, blood flows into your blood vessels, increasing blood pressure. This is called systolic blood pressure.
When your heart relaxes between beats, the flow of blood lessens, and blood pressure drops. This is diastolic blood pressure.
This is why your blood pressure is recorded as two numbers—the first, higher number is the systolic blood pressure, and the second, lower number is the diastolic blood pressure. Secondary Hypertension
Up to 95% of hypertension patients suffer from what doctors call "essential hypertension." This means that no reason can be found for the rise in blood pressure. Only 5% of patients have "secondary hypertension." Secondary hypertension has a clearly identifiable cause, such as kidney disease, that generates the heightened blood pressure. Treating the primary cause successfully usually resolves secondary hypertension. Living-With-Hypertension explores ways to combat high blood pressure on a daily basis Environmental Considerations
Essential hypertension is a complex problem because there is no obvious reason why the blood pressure is so high. Patients and doctors have to do some detective work to locate possible reasons for hypertension. Here are some of the more common contributors to high blood pressure:

94. Asthma Clinical Trials
smoke and other irritants cause asthma attacks, the fact that asthma runs in familiessuggests that genetics are at least partially responsible for the disease
http://www.asthma-clinical-trials.com/
Finding New Treatments For Asthma
Until extensive research was done on asthma, parents watched helplessly as their asthmatic children, even infants, fought for breath, wheezing and coughing to the point of exhaustion. These heartbreaking scenes are, for many people, a thing of the past, thanks to the work done by researchers as they conduct asthma clinical trials.
The new treatments that result from clinical trials are important to many asthmatics. Bronchodilators, corticosteroids and other important treatments and drugs have been carefully tested for their effect, feasibility, side effects and contraindications. Thorough testing through several stages is needed before the FDA allows a drug to be marketed. Even devices such as inhalers and nebulizers go through extensive testing to make sure they do what they're supposed to do.
Asthma Research: A Complex Set of Issues
While clinical trials are conducted to ascertain the feasibility of new drugs and treatments, some studies are designed to enlighten researchers as to how asthma begins. Medical researchers have noticed that the condition is triggered by allergies to dust mites, pollen, wood and cigarette smoke, pet dander and many other airborne allergens. However, asthmatics also report that a cold or any type of viral infection makes their symptoms much worse. Asthma research continues to study these issues in order to find ways to relieve or maybe some day find a cure.
Advances in Asthma Study
Until the 1980s, asthma was largely thought to be a narrowing of the airways; bronchodilators were used to relax muscles to allow freer breathing. However, further study revealed that asthma-related breathing difficulties were exacerbated by inflammation of the airways and that corticosteroids could reduce this inflammation. To this day, corticosteroids are the medicine of choice for many asthmatics.

97. Migraine Headache Causes And Triggers
Migraine Headache Causes and Triggers Some researchers have suggestedthat migraines can be traced to an overactive nervous system.
http://www.migraine-facts.com/html/causes.php3
Migraine Headache Causes and Triggers
Some researchers have suggested that migraines can be traced to an overactive nervous system. When the nervous system detects certain substances, sensations or other triggers, it sets in motion a series of brain activity that leads to blood vessel dilation or contraction.
Isolating your personal headache causes often requires patience and a fair bit of detective work. Almost any substance can prompt a migraine: stress, food additives such as MSG, preservatives such as nitrates or nitrites, muscle tension, even weather changes and smells can lead to migraines. Some people react to headache causes consistently; for others, the item that triggers a headache one day may not trigger it the next. Using a headache diary may help narrow down possible triggers.
Food and Food Additives
Foods and food additives are extremely common dietary triggers. While any food can conceivably be a trigger, some foods are more common triggers than others. Food additives such as MSG, artificial sweeteners, sulfites, nitrite and nitrates have all been listed as potential headache triggers. Common food triggers include:
Dairy Products: milk, cream, ice cream, hard cheese, aged cheese

Bladder Surgery
Presuming incontinence isn’t due to some other treatable cause, incontinence patients may choose to undergo bladder surgery after exhausting therapeutic and non-surgical medical options. A wide range of surgeries can repair or strengthen bladders, depending on the causes of the incontinence.
A small percentage of bladder control problems may be associated with bladder cancer. Treatment may include removal of tumors, extensive bladder reconstruction, or even surgery to remove the bladder altogether. These surgeries are typically more involved and extensive than those procedures for incontinence. Below you’ll find a breakdown of types of incontinence bladder surgery and bladder cancer treatment.
Surgical Bladder Repair
Repairs for weakened or damaged bladders are the norm for most incontinence problems. Surgeries are available to remove blockages, raise fallen bladders, and even implant artificial sphincters.
Bladder Surgery Description Possible Complications Retropubic Suspension This surgery is specifically for women. The bladder and urethra are raised in the pelvic area, bringing them back into the correct position. This prevents the bladder from pushing down onto the urethra. Urinary Tract Infections
Infections in the surgical area
Recurrence of incontinence
Sling Procedure Usually performed on women. Either a synthetic material or abdominal tissue is used to help compress the urethral sphincter.

99. Bladder Control Exercises And Other Therapies
Therapy for Bladder Control Before pharmaceutical or surgical possibilities are consideredfor incontinence sufferers, noninvasive therapy for bladder control
http://www.bladder-control-treatments.com/html/therapeutic_intervention.php3
Therapy for Bladder Control
Before pharmaceutical or surgical possibilities are considered for incontinence sufferers, non-invasive therapy for bladder control is usually tried. Therapy can involve retraining bladders, performing bladder control exercise to tone and strengthen the bladder, or the use of various bladder control products. Therapies may be used in combination.
Bladder Control Exercise Therapies
Exercises to strengthen bladders and surrounding muscles are fundamental therapies for bladder control problems. Here are some of the different types of bladder control exercises:
Kegel Exercises
Originally designed to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles of childbearing women, Kegel exercises are a common form of bladder control exercise. It should be noted that Kegel exercises do not directly exercise bladder muscles: by strengthening the pelvic floor muscles they help prevent the bladder from pushing down on the urethra, a common cause of stress incontinence.
Both men and women can perform Kegel exercises. The key to success is learning to correctly identify the muscles that need to be tensed, and the exercises must be performed consistently to be of use. A number of bladder control products on the market can teach you how to perform Kegels.
Biofeedback
To strengthen the sphincter and bladder muscles, you have to learn which muscles to tighten. Biofeedback can teach you to recognize these muscle groups. Electrodes detect which muscles you tighten, and transmit that information onto a screen. That way, with a little help from the therapist, you can learn exactly which muscles to tense, and what it feels like. Like Kegels, the muscle tensing you learn in biofeedback can be seen as a fitness program for your bladder: to be effective, you have to “work out” regularly.

100. Products That Help You Cope With Urinary Incontinence

http://www.living-with-urinary-incontinence.com/html/helpful-products.php3
Protective Incontinence Products
The range of protective incontinence products available can be confusing to the first time buyer. Many people shy away from wearing protective undergarments because they don’t want to wear a "diaper," or believe that the undergarment will be visible through their clothing. In fact, the diaper-style undergarment is only one of a selection of possible undergarments.
Types of Undergarments
Pull-ups
Pull-up undergarments pull on and off like regular underpants. They can handle mild to moderate leakage.
Belted Garments
Belted garments provide protection to the front and back, and attach by means of elastic belts. They allow a little more freedom of movement, but the belts can fit quite tightly. They are best used for mild to moderate incontinence.
Adhesive Pads
Pads come in a variety of designs. Specially designed male and female pads are available. The insert attaches to underwear with adhesive strips. Most pads handle mild incontinence well, and some can absorb moderate leakage.
