    CYSTIC HYGROMA
    DEFINITION:
A cystic lesion caused by a mass of dilated lymphatics which is usually found in the neck.
    EPIDEMIOLOGY:
    • incidence: 1/12,000 births
    • age of onset:
      • usually at birth or within the first year of life
      • may be identified in utero by ultrasound
    • risk factors:
      • M = F
      PATHOGENESIS:
      1. Background
      • cystic hygromas begin to develop at about 40 days gestation and are due to the failure of the embryonic lymphatics to connect with the venous system -> the lymphatics become dilated and continue to grow forming cystic structures
      • the left-sided predominance may be due to a failure of the thoracic duct junction to connect with the left subclavian vein
      • cystic hygromas are also called cystic lymphangiomas
      • location:
        • 75% in the neck
        • 20% in the axilla
        • 5% in the mediastinum, retroperitoneum, or pelvis
        CLINICAL FEATURES:
        1. Cystic Hygromas
        • diffuse, non-tender mass usually found in the neck at birth
        • soft, well-demarcated, and irregular on palpation
        • usually found in the posterior triangle of the neck and most occur on the left side (L>R; 2:1)
        • mass may be small -> large
        • easy to transilluminate
        • small and medium size hygromas are usually asymptomatic
        • larger hygromas may extend into the face, mouth, tongue, parotid, larynx, or chest (15% extend into the mediastinum) and can be associated with complications

Does anyone have any information on Cystic Hygromas and turners syndrome? I was 12 weeks pregnant and terminated my pregnancy due to these conditions. Plus the baby had a heart defect.
I have two healthy children already and my husband and I are so scared to try again, we don't want to go through this a 2nd time. What are the chances that
the baby will have a problem?
Any information would be appreciated. Thank you Next Article

Visitors FastCounter by bCentral Our primary aim is to provide support to families in Australia and the surrounding regions who have a child with Cystic Hygroma. Other aims include promoting awareness of Cystic Hygroma and providing information on developments in the treatment of Cystic Hygroma. The site will include our family's experience with having a child with Cystic Hygroma Other families are very welcome so submit their stories and contact details in the hope of creating a network of support in this region. We also hope to provide medical updates / articles on Cystic Hygroma and it's treatment. We will have generalized information on all the issues involved in caring for a child with Cystic Hygroma. There will also be a guestbook for people to sign, leave a comment or to post questions / ideas they might have. What Is Cystic Hygroma? By definition Cystic Hygroma means a “moist tumor” These types of tumors are benign and therefore are not related to cancer, which is what most people associate with the word tumor. Another common word that is used is Lymphangioma and so both terms are sometimes referred to as Lymphatic Malformations. So far no one has been able to determine what causes these conditions. Popular thought at the moment is that something goes wrong during development of the Lymphatic system early in pregnancy. Sometimes a hygroma will be picked up on ultrasound during pregnancy. (although our son’s wasn’t)

December 98 - Student Case Study This case study presents a 35-year-old white female who was referred to the UAMS High-Risk Obstetrical Clinic due to advanced maternal age. The patient and her husband received genetic counseling. This was the patient's first pregnancy. She presented with no obvious complications. A routine obstetrical ultrasound exam was performed by an ARDMS certified obstetrical sonographer using a 3.5 MHz transabdominal transducer. The sonogram showed a single intrauterine pregnancy with an estimated gestational age of 17 weeks, 4 days (7.5 weeks). On examination of the fetal head a large cystic mass presented around the posterior of the neck. The nuchal fold measured 9.5mm and the nuchal ligament could be seen within the cystic mass. These findings are consistent with the diagnosis of cystic hygroma. Cystic hygromas are caused by a delay or absence of the communication between the jugular lymph sacs and the internal jugular veins during fetal development. Late communication of the sacs to drain into the internal jugular vein results in the dilation of lymph sacs into cystic spaces, increased posterior nuchal measurement, and neck webbing. Complete obstruction of the jugular lymphatic is often associated with fetal hydrops, which is frequently fatal (Sanders, 1996). Another probable cause of cystic hygroma is abnormal budding of lymphatic endothelium. Increased nuchal thickness (nuchal lucency) can be detected at 10 weeks (Stevens 1998).
