incides with DWS (5-8th week of embryonic period). Case Report Fig. 1. MRI T 2 weighted sagital section of lumbosacral spine. The findings are suggestive of intrasacral meningocele. The lumbar spine also shows compressive collapse of L2 vertebra with gross degeneration of discs at L1-2 and L 3-4 levels because of trauma in the past. Discussion Although, DWS was described in the literature during the second half of the nineteenth century, it was only in 1914 that Dandy and Blackfan(1), published the first clinical description postulating at the same time the pathogenetic theory of absence of foramina of Luschka and Magendie. The abnormalities associated with DWS are either malformations of the brain or systemic anomalies(2). The case reported hereby is unusual in the sense that anomalies like supernumerary nipples, pilonidal sinus, chordee penis, cervical rib and intrasacral meningocele with tethered cord have not yet been reported in association with DWS(2,3). Interestingly the teratogenic period of some of these anomalies is also same as of DWS

Cheyanne Hathaway Introduction Dandy-Walker syndrome (DWS) is a congenital (present at birth) brain malformation typically involving the fourth ventricle and the cerebellum. The disorder was first described in 1914 by W. Dandy and K. Blackfan and was designated as Dandy-Walker syndrome in 1954 by C. Benda, who also reported familial occurrence. DWS occurs in one out of every 25,000 live births and occurs more frequently in females than males. Features and Characteristics The following characteristics have been seen in children with Dandy-Walker syndrome:
    • Enlargement of the fourth ventricle Absence (partial or complete) of the cerebellar vermis (area between the two cerebral hemispheres) Cyst formation in the posterior fossa (internal base of the skull) Slow motor development in early infancy Progressive macrocrania (abnormally enlarged skull) Hydrocephalus Seizures Intracranial pressure in older children, causing irritability, vomiting, and convulsions Cerebellar dysfunction causing ataxia and nystagmus Bulging occiput (back of head) Cranial nerve dysfunction Abnormal breathing patterns Agenesis of the corpus callosum Malformations of the face, limbs, digits, and heart

    Dandy-Walker syndrome Also known as:
    Dandy-Walker disease
    Dandy-Walker anomaly
    Dandy-Walker cyst
Synonyms: Atresia of the foramen of Magendie, atresia of the foramen of Luschka and Magendie, obstructed Sylvius aqueduct, Luschka-Magendie foramina atresia, internal hydrocephalus, and noncommunicating hydrocephalus. Associated persons: Julius Arnold Walter Edward Dandy Arthur Earl Walker Description: A variant of Arnold-Chiari syndrome. A congenital brain malformation involving the fourth ventricle and cerebellum, marked by partial or complete absence of the cerebellar vermis, and posterior fossa cyst continuous with the fourth ventricle. Congenital hydrocephalus is caused by blockage of the foramina of Magendie and Luschka (the foramina of the fourth ventricle of the brain), through which the cerebrospinal fluid passes. Because of the blockage, the cerebrospinal fluid cannot pass into the subarachnoid space and in consequence accumulates in the ventricles. Symptoms are vomiting, hyperirritability, convulsion. There is progressive enlargement of the head, congested veins in the scalp, bulging of anterior fontanelle, separated cranial sutures. Other complications may include papilledema, blepharoptosis, bradycardia, bradypnea and sixth cranial nerve paralysis. Develops in utero.
