Welcome to SkinCell International Forum for Skin Disorders
An international non-profit discussion forum for ALL skin complaints including Acne, Eczema, Psoriasis, Rosacea and many others. Open to sufferers, their family and friends.
Origins of SkinCell
SkinCell was established in August 2002 because we saw that whilst there are many very informative and resourceful sites on the Web, very few concentrated on the psychological trauma that we skin sufferers face. The majority of those great sites specialise in a single skin condition, a few concentrate on all dermatological conditions, even fewer address the serious issue of patient well-being. Here at SkinCell we have attempted to make available to all skin sufferers and their families an open and free forum where they can discuss any skin condition they choose.
The Forum
SkinCell offers a lively and friendly Forum for its members including:
  • Skin and General Health discussions Member Profiles; including Username, Country of origin, personal avatars, home web site links, posting history etc

Uncommon Causes of Stroke
Edited by Julien Bogousslavsky, Louis R. Caplan
In stock Published as a companion to the second edition of Stroke Syndromes, this comprehensive reference provides in-depth descriptions of many rare and relatively uncommon causes of stroke. Together with Stroke Syndromes, it emphasises pattern recognition in the location and diagnosis of stroke. This is the most comprehensive and authoritative text on stroke of uncommon cause. It describes various forms of angiitis, coagulation disorders, infective, paraneoplastic and metabolic disorders that may be associated with stroke, and a number of individually rare syndromes such as Eales disease, Fabry disease, and pseudoxanthoma elasticum. For all neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists and vascular surgeons, it is a unique scientific and clinical resource. It will provide a useful reference to help physicians diagnose and treat stroke patients who do not fit well into the usual clinical categories.

The Central Nervous System Vasculitis (CNSV)
"Family Tree"
Vasculitis in the central nervous system is extremely rare, and its causes and treatments are not well understood. This "Family Tree" is merely our attempt to put its various manifestations in perspective for people with CNSV and their families. This representation has not been endorsed by any medical authority, and it is not the final word on the classification of CNS vasculitis.
VASCULITIS
Vasculitis (or angiitis) is inflamation. That is, tissue reacts to illness or injury with swelling and painful sensitivity to pressure. To simplify, this inflamation essentially destroys the tissue in the walls of the blood vessels, and the vessels collapse. The blood supply at that particular site is stopped or diverted due to the blockage in the bloodstream, and the tissue that depends on that blood is damaged or dies. (This is called "ischemia.")
CNS VASCULITIS
The central nervous system (CNS) includes the brain, the spinal cord and their protective covering. With CNS vasculitis, central nervous system tissue is destroyed as a result of ischemia. Vasculitis occurs on a much smaller scale than does a stroke, but its cumulative effects are almost identical. Because its causes are not known and because there are so few cases, there is no consistent nomenclature in the literature. However, in general terms, there are two main categories of CNSV: primary and secondary

    http://www.btinternet.com/~little_willow/barricade/hspages/whatis.html
What is Hidradenitis? This is an "uncommon" disorder of unknown cause in which boil-like lumps develop in the groin and sometimes under the arms and under the breasts. The lumps can also be found in other areas, such as behind the ears, in the crease of the buttocks and around the genitals. Although a few hundred papers have been written on hidradenitis, there seems to be relatively little solid knowledge about it.
    • Although there is no medical proof, hidradenitis seems to have been found alongside many disorders that are apparently unrelated, such as Crohn's disease, obesity, Dowling-Degos disease, lymphoedema (swelling of the body tissues caused by a build-up of fluid), a form of arthritis, sarcoidosis, Down's Syndrome and the sexually transmitted infection chlamydia. From the people that have contacted the H.I.D.E. mailing list, there also seems a preponderance of thyroid disorders and autoimmune diseases. One of the theories as to the cause is that it itself may be an autoimmune condition. One person has mentioned that treating herself with an anti-candida diet drastically helped her HS.
    • The use of some medicines, such as lithium, have also been linked.
