Depression: Frequently Asked Questions
What is clinical depression?
Clinical depression is a serious and common disorder of mood that is pervasive, intense and attacks the mind and body at the same time. Current theories indicate that clinical depression may be associated with an imbalance of chemicals in the brain that carry communications between nerve cells that control mood and other bodily systems. Other factors may also come into play, such as negative life experiences such as stress or loss, medication, other medical illnesses, and certain personality traits and genetic factors.

The Great Depression

http://www.plainfield.k12.in.us/hschool/webq1/webquest.htm The Wall Street stock-market crash of 1929 precipitated the Great Depression, the worst economic downturn in the history of the United States. The depression had devastating effects on the country. The stock market was in shambles. Many banks couldn't continue to operate. Farmers fell into bankruptcy. A quarter of the working force, or 13 million people, were unemployed in 1932, and this was only the beginning. The depression lasted over a decade, with hundreds of thousands of Americans losing their jobs, businesses failing, and financial institutions collapsing.
The Task
Your teacher has assigned you a profession. Assume the role of a person in that profession living in the Great Depression. Use the resources to explore your economic choices for your family.
  • Determine your weekly wage and yearly income for your profession.
  • Determine how long you would need to work to buy certain items for your family.
  • Answer questions about the choices in your daily life with your profession.

Welcome I
n these times of high anxiety and uncertainty, now more than ever we need to stick to the treatments and practices that keep us well, from medications and natural remedies to smart lifestyle choices to support systems to spiritual practice - and feel free to change the channel from CNN to a Seinfeld rerun. Visitors to McMan's Depression and Bipolar Web come from all over the world, from the US, including those in the US military, as well as countries that take issue with the US going to war, and last but not least Iraq. Please be assured that on this website, we are all part of the same community, committed to helping one another. For those whose lives are at risk, regardless of nationality, our thoughts are with you. For all of my visitors, may the war will be short, casualties light, and may we have cause to give thanks over its outcome. E ach year some one million people worldwide die by their own hand, 30 thousand in the US, 3,500 in Canada, and 120,000 in Europe, most as a result of depression or bipolar disorder. The true figure is probably many times higher, disguised as death by accident and death by risky behavior. We who have experienced some of their pain mourn the tragedy, knowing no God would ever judge them harshly. To all those whose lives have been lost and to the friends and family they left behind these pages are lovingly dedicated.

http://www.textcon.dk/jobmagasinet/artikler/26kuldep.htm
Nr. 26 - januar 2001 DEN KULTURBETINGEDE DEPRESSION

What is Clinical Depression? In the normal course of life, everyone has times when they feel somewhat less than happy and optimistic. Although many people attribute their feelings of sadness or lethargy to the onset of depression, it's important to understand that medical professionals have specific indicators that they use to make a diagnosis of clinical depression. When you know more about what's wrong you can make it right. Let's start with the word "clinical." By definition, a condition is clinical if it is directly observed. That is, the professional does not count on a patient's self-report but is more likely to check for symptoms of depression that can be observed and documented. Clinical depression is a phrase used to describe a condition serious enough to require clinical (professional) and possibly pharmacological intervention. Clinical depression, according to medical sources, lasts more than two weeks and is usually not precipitated by anything external.
