Synonyms:
Adiposalgia, adiposis dolorosa, adipositas dolorosa, adipositas tuberosa simplex, fibrolipomatosis dolorosa, lipalgia, lipomatosis dolorosa, neurolipomatosis. Associated persons: James Meschter Anders Francis Xavier Dercum Unknown Vitaut Description: Rare condition characterized by scattered areas of painful cutaneous nodules or fat accumulations. Development of the nodular, tender lipomas is gradual with localization largely to forearms and thighs. It occurs chiefly in menopausal obese women of middle age and may be familial. Symptoms are asthenia, headache, frequently amenorrhoea and ecchymoses; diminution of sweating. Mental depression and deterioration have been observed in an appreciable number of these patients. Long progressive course. Death often caused by cardiac failure. Most cases of this rare disorder are sporadic but autosomal dominant inheritance has been documented. Dercum in 1888 first described the syndrome in a fifty-one year old woman and presented three more cases in 1892, writing:

Familial Multiple Lipomas
This is a condition in which groups of fat cells in the subcutaneous tissues begin to grow spontaneously and produce multiple fatty lumps underneath the skin. These are benign fatty tumors or lipomas. This condition is quite common and is frequently genetic in origin, due to a mutation of the mitochondrial DNA. The presentation of this disease is variable. Most patients have multiple small fatty subcutaneous nodules that are painless. The number of nodules may vary from very few to many. They are mostly located on the arms, forearms, legs and trunk but they can occur in the neck, face and buttocks. In some patients, if neglected, these fatty lumps can grow to a large size and can make the patient appear grotesque. While these lumps are usually painless, in some patients they are painful and if large, they are subcategorized into an entity called . This disease was first described by Dr. F. X. Dercum in 1888, when he found a patient with large painful subcutaneous tumors. The correct medical term is called Adiposis Dolorosa. In this aspect of familial multiple lipomatosis, the fatty lumps are painful. The degree of pain varies from being mild to severe. The cause of the pain is unknown.

Overview Article This article, by Håkan Brorson and Birger Fagher, is a good description and overview of the disease. (please be patient - it's a long article with lots of pictures and takes time to load). Original article in Swedish. A Pain in the Groin - This article is of great interest because it is the story of an older woman with a history of Dercum's Disease who goes to her doctor with a pain in her groin. They end up doing a hysterectomy and other stuff, and the pain did not go away. Finally, after some months, as the pain got worse, the doctors were able to convince the women to go back into surgery (she was not keen on it, since the previous surgeries did not solve the problem) and they finally operated on her again and took out a sizable lipoma.
Maureen has talked to a lady who had a similar pain, and the doctor took out her appendix to relieve the pain. He took out the wrong thing. Again, it was a Dercum's lipoma. [ Reference #54] This article is also courtesy of The Lancet. Lethal infection by a previously unrecognised metazoan parasite - 1996 - This article was written by a number of doctors in the San Francisco/San Jose area. The summary states:

There is a disease called Dercum's disease that is characterized by multiple painful lipomas. Not sure if this describes your husband's conditions, but it sounds like it. It has been associated with weakness, fatigue, emotional and cognitive changes in some cases, but fortunately there is no known association with other neurological signs/symptoms. Treatment is usually targeted towards pain relief rather than removal. Lidocaine ( a local anesthetic) can sometimes be helpful for very painful ones. There is a support group for patients and families with dercum's disease. However, I do not have any information on this. Perhaps you can try the internet.
In the case that this is not dercum's disease, lipomas themselves are not cancerous and do not necessitate surgical removal. There is a disease called liposarcomas which are fatty
