L ipomas are slow-growing, nearly always benign, adipose tumors that are most often found in the subcutaneous tissues. Most lipomas are asymptomatic, can be diagnosed with clinical examination (Table 1) and do not require treatment. These tumors may also be found in deeper tissues such as the intermuscular septa, the abdominal organs, the oral cavity, the internal auditory canal, the cerebellopontine angle and the thorax. Lipomas have been identified in all age groups but usually first appear between 40 and 60 years of age. Congenital lipomas have been observed in children. Some lipomas are believed to have developed following blunt trauma.

    Further information
Links to other Dercum sites A chronic, almost unknown disease, described for the first time by the American neurologist Francis X. Dercum in 1888. Neither the cause of the disease, nor which sort, is yet known. Most common symptoms:
Pain, definite or indefinite swellings or lipomas, weight gain of maybe 50%, fatigue, difficulty in walking. The disease occurs mainly among women and increases with age. In spite of the fact that the disease has been known and described for more than 100 years very little research is going on - a fact that must relate to the disease being so rare. The WHO system of diagnoses ICD-10 places it under the number E 88-2.
Please notice that this is a private homepage based only on my personal knowledge and cannot replace any contact with your physician.
Originally the primary goal of making this site was to spread information about this disease in Danish as almost nothing is available in Danish regarding this subject. But realizing that also foreigners visit the homepage an English translation has now been added.

    Francis Xavier Dercum
American neurologist, born August 10, 1856, Philadelphia; died April 24, 1931.
    Associated eponyms:
    Dercum's disease or syndrome

Rare condition characterized by scattered areas of painful cutaneous nodules or fat accumulations. Development of the nodular, tender lipomas is gradual with localization largely to forearms and thighs. Biography: Francis Xavier Dercum, whose family originally came from England, was born in a period of intense political conflicts which culminated with the Civil War. His father, Ernest Dercum, was a successful bookseller and grain wholesaler, which made it possible to finance the son’s studies. In 1884 Dercum succeeded Charles Karsner Mills (1845-1931) as head of the neurological clinic at the University of Pennsylvania. Already at this time he was fully active as a general practitioner and an accomplished diagnostician. It was at this time the photographer and scientist Eadweard Muybridge (1830-1904) commenced his studies of the movements of horses. Movies had not yet been invented, and Muybridge took his pictures with an array of camera in which the shutters were released by electromagnets. The horses’ movements could then be studied by gluing the pictures to the inside of a cylinder which was then rotated. This laid the foundation for the coming movie industry, and his extensive studies and inventions were acknowledged by such pioneers of motion pictures as E. J. Marey, the Lumière brothers, and Thomas Edison.
