Dercums disease What is Dercum's disease? Morbus Dercum (Adiposis dolorosa) is a chronic disease with mild to intensive pain in the fatty tissue, fatigue and obesity as the most apparent symptoms. But the disease affects the entire body and can present a long list of symptoms. This disorder usually occurs in females between the ages of 25 and 60, but can début in all ages, as well as in younger people and amongst males. It is about 20 times more frequent in females than in males. Dercum's disease, was originally described in the medical literature in 1892 by the American doctor Frances Xavier Dercum. Symptoms Typical pain pattern Other commonly symptom are: Various areas of the body may swell for no apparent reason. The fingers becomes clumsy, you drop things and sometimes the fingers go numb. Disturbed sleep, many have difficulties going to sleep because of the pain, but other forms of sleeping disorders also occur. General fatigue, gets worse with even mild activity. Tendency to become black and blue that seems to arise spontaneously or after alleviated blow. Stiffness after resting especially in the mornings.

They were very painful to him and he often thought they were muscle knots, but they never went away. Anonymous Unfortunately, at the moment I am hesitant to include my name on the registry even though I have been diagnosed, etc. Guess the reason is that I am not sure I am ready to deal with the potential of countless e-mail from other folks that registration might generate. Call it "chicken", or just simply a desire to be somewhat "private", but not selfish; maybe I will change my mind in the near future. By that time, I will have turned into one giant lipoma at the rate my body is producing them; have had about 3 dozen removed, but it seems pointless because they are replaced eventually by others; usually wait to remove them until the pain becomes more than I want to bear, or until I cannot stand the sight of them anymore; they are present throughout the torso, back, upper legs, arms, buttocks, and probably other places I have yet to discover! It may sound strange, but somehow my sense of humor helps somewhat to "mentally" diminish the pain associated with the tumors, albeit very temporarily. I am male, just under 6 ft. tall, and weigh about 190. Late father had some lipomas, but not to the extent that I have them. Incidentally, my oldest daughter, now 34, has "inherited" the wonderful genetic trait and has discovered several lipomas of her own. Hopefully, she will not develop enough to become a full blown Dercum's statistic. Have forwarded your message on to her, not to frighten her, but to keep her informed.

Strict physiological controls exist for the use and storage of adipose 'tissue so that thermoregulatory and metabolic demands for energy can be sustained. Such controls are affected by hormonal and neural mediators, often interacting both at peripheral and central sites. The role of the autonomic nervous system in regard to these functions has been widely investigated in vitro and in vivo in animals and man. The effects of classical sensory or motor components of the nervous system on adipose tissue are less clearly established. For example, pain is a feature of many disorders of fat tissue and the possible role of the autonomic nervous system versus sensory nerves in mediating pain must be considered. The sensory nervous system has been believed to be of little importance to adipose tissue, but the recent finding of sensory nerves within adipose tissue raises issues of interest to dermatologists. In addition to a potential role in pain sensation, neuropeptides released by antidromic stimulation of sensory nerves have been shown to have an important role in cutaneous inflammation, and it is possible that they might also initiate or perpetuate inflammation within adipose tissue.
