As a Board Certified Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeon, it is always exciting to begin a new year with the latest information on life enhancing technology that will benefit my patients and potentially save their lives. 2002 is especially remarkable with the emergence of the Cardiotron or 3D-MP, a mathematical and computer enhanced electrocardiogram (EKG) that can detect the early stages of heart disease. With the sensitivity and accuracy of over 90%, the Cardiotron can predict and thus give physicians the opportunity to intervene before a heart attack or irreversible damage to the heart occurs. Physicians have always sought more advanced methods to tell us what is going on in the body. Computerized Tomography or the CT scan, is one method that is often utilized to tell us about the heart. Although it is useful in showing the deposits of calcium in the arteries and on the arterial wall, it has some drawbacks. The CT scan doesn't always tell us enough to accurately diagnose early stage heart disease. In addition, it can be expensive and necessitates exposure to radiation. In my opinion, it is not an adequate screening test for heart disease, although it continues to be advocated as such.

Its name is amyotrophic (wasting of nerve cells controlling muscles) lateral (at the side of the spinal cord ) sclerosis (scarring) and is due to death of nerve cells that supply muscles usually for the limbs but sometimes in the mouth and throat. Its a progressive fatal nerve disease of unknown cause usually lasting less than 3 years. Twenty percent live over 5 years. An African American patient of mine, aged 66, first noted small local spontaneous muscle contractions easily visible through the skin of his forearm, a sign that the muscle was dying because its nerve supply had withered. Another man in his 50's (it's more common in men than women) had tiny tremors of his tongue. He was one of the 10% that have the disease run in their family. Often its weakness of one hand that is noted, then the other is affected. Later the toe catches on carpets. All four limbs are soon affected but there is no loss of sensation, mental ability, or bladder or bowel control. Weakness, incoordination, cramps and spasm develop with difficulty in using the hands for skilled movements, also with walking, speaking and swallowing. The final stages are often distressing for the patient and the family. With awareness and intellect unaffected, the victim is unable to speak, to swallow, or move purposefully. Then the patient has trouble breathing. Realistic choices have to be made about the use of "heroics" in an emergency and whether a respirator should be used.

A Biography by Dimitri Kennaway THE WATCHMAKER'S APPRENTICE Born London, 31st January 1906; died there, 12th February 1973. Composer, conductor and pianist etc. He was apprenticed to a watchmaker at fourteen but, after one year, began serious studies with the American pianist Victor Benham, first in London, later in Cologne. At seventeen he returned to England and earned a living in jazz (as violinist, pianist and arranger), while continuing serious studies at London's Guildhall School of Music, under Orlando Morgan, on a scholarship from the Worshipful Company of Musicians. His earliest surviving manuscript (Three Studies for Piano, Op. 1) dates from 1926. Continued working in jazz during the 1930s, also as music director for West End Revue. Neuronal Calcium Channels in Disease Human Research Potential - Research Training Network Welcome to the home page of Neuronal Calcium Channel Research Training Network. We are addressing the roles of L- and P/Q-type Ca channels in several human diseases. In particular, we are interested in: the roles of class C and D L-type Ca channels in mediating Ca influx into pancreatic islet cells, and in modulating insulin secretion, the mechanisms by which mutations of the human gene CACNA1A, which codes for the a subunit of P/Q-type channels, cause familial hemiplegic migraine, and the broader role of Ca channels in neurological and other diseases. Dimitri Marick Michael Nader 1991 to present Dimitri Yakov Marick, aka Count Andrassy, arrived in Pine Valley in the autumn of 1991. Skeletal remains are often the only pieces of evidence available. Limited mummified remains have been found in peat bogs and ice packs and from later civilizations such as the Egyptians. Some information may also be gleaned from studying recent or current civilizations with lifestyles similar to those of ancient humans and from studying living primates in their natural habitat. Disease in Primitive Peoples Primitive humans were hunters and gatherers. They lived in small groups and moved from one location to another following the availability of resources. Their population size was necessarily small and they made infrequent contact with other groups. This particular lifestyle is consistent with a low incidence of non-communicable disease which is often associated with high fat, low fiber and sedentary ways as in many of our contemporary cultures. Therefore, it is likely that few individuals suffered from high blood pressure, heart disease, atherosclerosis and organ cancers, although there is evidence that such diseases did exist. The small population size and infrequent intergroup contact is consistent with a relatively low incidence of acute infectious disease. Recent studies have indicated that local population sizes must range from about 100,000 to 500,000 to begin to support such acute infectious diseases as measles. Therefore, it is most likely that the kinds of infectious disease suffered more often by primitive cultures was of the chronic and recurrent type such as herpesvirus diseases like cold sores and chicken pox, tuberculosis, syphilis, leprosy. The duty of treatment eventually fell to the healer, medicine man, or shaman that is, the local clergy. This person was not only responsible for individual welfare, but also the welfare of the group as he invoked his powers for favorable weather, harvest and outcomes of battle. Even without a sense of the true cause of disease, some healers did use a crude empiricism in attempting to derive treatments. 'Herbal' medicine led to the discovery of treatments still used or well understood today. For example, opium was discovered as a pain killer, honey with its antimicrobial properties was used to prevent wound infections, and a plant from India that was used as a sedative is now the source of a common drug used to treat high blood pressure. However, one common treatment which was found in many primitive societies across the globe and very recently in the South Pacific was trephination. This procedure involved boring a hole in the patient's skull, supposedly to release the affecting demons. That the patient sometimes survived the treatment is evident in regrowth of the skull bone seen in some human remains.
