Fellowship Program
Introduction
The Cornea Service at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary was created in 1964 under the direction of Dr. Claes Dohlman. The cornea fellowship at MEEI was the first such program in the country to combine clinical and research activities. The MEEI cornea fellowship has graduated 147 fellows, 16 full-time academic chairs, 15 additional full professors in the United States, and 11 chairs of departments abroad. The primary goal of the MEEI Cornea Service Fellowship is to facilitate each fellow's development as a future academic leader in the field of cornea and external disease. Accordingly, the intellectual growth of a cornea fellow is marked by the development of diagnostic and medical/surgical skills pertaining to the entire spectrum of corneal and external disorders, as well as clinical and applied laboratory research. The Cornea Fellowship is a two year program. Each year, the fellow will spend six months in clinic and six months in research. The research component encompasses basic and clinical science with an emphasis on cornea and external disease.

Papa-Dimitri Gagastathis A Simple Priest of Our Days
We live in a complex world that grants simplicity a certain charm but favors sophistication. Many people are embarrassed or even offended by the thought that others might characterize them as simple. Even as Orthodox Christians, we may admire simplicity in others but we seldom make a conscious effort to nurture it in ourselves, quite forgetting that the Lord said plainly: Except ye be converted and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. (Matt. 18:3) This neglected virtue is well illustrated by the life of Father Dimitrios Gagastathis, a simple Greek village priest of our time. If he had difficulty composing a sermon, his feelings of inadequacy were unfounded. As a priest-monk from Patmos wrote to him: ...What difference does it make if you don't possess titles of worldly wisdom. Take for instance Saint Spyridon- what was he? A simple man, most simple, a former shepherd. But nevertheless he put Arius to shame. Not to mention Saint Anthony, the completely illiterate doctor of the desert! You, too, Father Dimitrios, possessing simplicity of heart and an ardent love towards the Lord, you attract the grace of the Holy Spirit, the Comforter. Besides, the Lord called you to work in a fold of simple men, villagers, who can understand you and you can understand them. You have had with the Lord's Grace a great effect on their souls as a genuine priest and a true servant of the Lord.

This paper discusses the life and contributions of Dimitri Mendeleev, the founder of the first Periodic Table of Elements.. Term Paper #: # of words: # of sources: Format (MLA/APA): MLA Written: Price: Hide: Author: Gloria Arena
Abstract
From The Paper
Mendeleev was born in 1834 in Siberia. His family consisted of thirteen brothers and sisters, his mother and his father. The family was poor, his father eventually went deaf before he died, and yet Mendeleev’s mother insisted that her youngest child further his education. He hitchhiked over 14,000 miles across Russia to Moscow, only to be turned down by the University of Moscow because he was from Siberia. His mother never gave up, and the two of them traveled to St. Petersburg where he trained and eventually became a Professor of inorganic chemistry at the University of. St. Petersburg. (Chang, 233) During his third year of study there, Mendeleev fell ill, and was bedridden for the next year. He kept up with his studies, and graduated on time, and received the medal of excellence for being first in his class. (Rumppe, Sixtus

http://ag.arizona.edu/~zxiong/plp611/100year1.html
Forward: 100 Years of Virology BY Arnold J Levine, Alice Lustig, Dmitri K Lvov The Romans used the word 'virus' to describe the kind of stench or poison that arose from swamps. The term evolved to mean any noxious entity and was eventually used to designate all infectious microbes. A century ago, a young Russian scientist, Dimitri Ivanovsky, recognized that an infectious agent capable of passing through a filter that restricted bacteria was responsible for the mosaic disease affecting tobacco plants. His observations, presented before the Academy of Sciences of St Petersburg, suggested the isolation of a disease-causing agent smaller than any previously recognized. Filtration in itself became an experimental definition, and 'filterable agent' was used by Ivanovsky and his colleagues to describe the submicroscopic organisms before the term virus was specifically applied to them. With the foundation secured, the pace of contributions to the field accelerated. Viruses were found in other plants, bacteria, soil fungi, and invertebrates, and they were identified as the source of a host of vertebrate diseases. By 1989, F.A.J. Loeffler and P. Frosch had isolated and described the first filterable agent from animals, the foot-and-mouth-disease virus. In 1901, Walter Reed and his team recognized the first human virus, the Jungle yellow fever virus. By the beginning of the twentieth century, the concept of viruses as agents of disease was firmly established. Even before the discovery of viruses, their effects were the focus of medical research. Near the end of the eighteenth century, Edward Jenner introduced the practice of vaccination against smallpox using exudate from cowpox lesions. Pasteur developed a vaccine for rabies 14 years before the first animal virus was characterized.

The treatment of coronary heart disease: An updatePart 5: Selected comments and questions
February 08, 2003 Key words: Vasospasm - Statins - Cardiovascular risk factors - Hypertriglyceridaemia SUMMARY Vasospasm is probably the cause of myocardial infarction (MI) in only a few cases. There are differences between statins and therefore they may not all be equally effective. Several cardiovascular risk factors need to be assessed in high-risk patients. Can myocardial infarction (MI) be caused by localised vasospastic occlusion rather than by coronary thrombosis? This may happen in a few MIs. In these cases it is probably even more important to consider the benefit of the restoration of normal vasodilatory responses following treatment with statins (e.g. pravastatin). A normalisation of vascular responses occurs rapidly - within 6-12 weeks after initiating treatment. This action may also explain why statins can improve angina-related symptoms. What is the clinical relevance of postprandial hypertriglyceridaemia?

She tends to Luisa and takes blood samples from her as well as the Adventure Inc. team in an effort to study the disease for a cure. However, between Fortunas and Dr. Kelly, the plan is not to find a cure, but to use the trio to incubate enough vaccine to protect all the citizens of Val Verde.

NIXON CENTRE PRESIDENT: WASHINGTON’S FEARS WITH REGARD TO RUSSIA WERE UNFOUNDED
Washington has started to understand that its fears with regard to Russia were unfounded. This opinion was expressed by Dimitri Simes, a prominent politologist, president of the Nixon Centre. According to him, the Russian President is strong, active and is taking steps which are well understood and accepted in the USA.
Speaking in New York at the conference "Investments in Russia and the CIS," Dimitri Simes underscored in particular: It is practically impossible today to imagine a conflict between America and Russia, but the relations between the two countries should become more stable and predictable. In his opinion, the new US administration is less ideologised and more pragmatic, which gives the ground to hope for a stable and predictable policy towards Russia.
Touching upon relations between the financial quarters of the USA and Russia, Dimitri Simes pointed out that the American investors, having lived through the difficulties of the 1998 crisis in Russia, are not in a hurry to return there now. He explains this partly by controversy of some actions of the Russian power structures, by the declarative nature of the legislative acts being taken and by the absence of a serious support of the investment climate on the state level, RIA Novosti reports.
