Summary
In a recent article in this journal, D. H. Gleaves (1996) criticized the socio-cognitive model (SCM; N. P. Spanos, 1994) of dissociative identity disorder (DID) and argued in favor of a posttraumatic model (PTM) in which DID is conceptualized as a consequence of childhood abuse and other traumatic events. The present authors demonstrate that (a) many of Gleaves's arguments were predicated on misunderstandings of the SCM, (b) scrutiny of the evidence regarding the psychopathology and assessment of DID raises questions concerning the PTM's conceptual and empirical underpinnings

Why would a woman seek counseling and then speak these obvious untruths about herself? Was Julie maliciously lying to her counselor or pretending to be something she was not? Why would an adult speak and act like a young child? The answers to these are found in understanding the mysterious psychological disorder known as Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), formerly called Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD). Dissociative Identity Disorder
or Multiple Personality Disorder

Dissociative Identity Disorder is the newer name for multiple personality disorder. If you saw "Three faces of Eve" then you have some idea of what we are talking about. The disorder is different in each person and is usually quite different from what is seen of Eve. It is generally believed to be caused by some type of trauma or abuse, which usually occured in childhood. The abuse was probably chronic, and either life threatening, or painful, or something that the child very much wanted to escape. There are several ways to explain. Each explanation tells a little, and answers a different question.
One explanation is that the child could not bear the pain and so dissociated or split to preserve the self. In this model, I like to describe this as creating a boundary around the exposed and vulnerable self so that it is protected. When that occurs, another self is present for the abuse. At another time, this exposed self may then create a boundary. What we end up with is many selves with boundaries between them. The different personalities are separate from each other and may not even know each other. The generally do not share information because there are dissocaitive boundaries between them. When abuse is occuring this may be useful. Think of selecting a basketball or a marble in a large bowl of marbles. In a bowl of marbles, the probability is lower that a particular marble is selected. More vulnerable selves can be preserved by being more internal, and also have a lower probability of selection. They can be additionally protected in other ways.

A curious paradox about Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) is that although not accepted by many psycho-analytical psychotherapists, it in fact proves object relations theory better than any other disorder. Where else can one see identification with the aggressor behaviorally manifest in front of one's eyes, in the form of a paternal introject alter? Similarly, I heard about transient psychotic transference in my training, but never saw one until I saw the first of hundreds demonstrated to me by DID patients I imagine that the vast bulk of so-called psychotic transference reactions in the twentieth century have actually been dissociative in nature. Most of the constructs of object relations theory, which seem to be abstract inferences about non-DID patients, become concretely behaviorally manifest during DID treatment.
A case example will illustrate the complexities of DID as an object
relations chess game.

What Is Dissociative Identity Disorder?
The growing recognition of psychiatric conditions resulting from traumatic influences is a significant mental health issue of the 1990s. Until recently considered rare and mysterious psychiatric curiosities, Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) (until very recently known as Multiple Personality Disorder - MPD) and other Dissociative Disorders (DD) are now understood to be fairly common effects of severe trauma in early childhood, most typically extreme, repeated physical, sexual, and/or emotional abuse. more >>
Dissociation

Dissociation is a notoriously ungrateful topic. It pushes nearly every "hot button" in the human psyche, with its allusions to gross abuse of small children, devil-worship, hypnosis, recovered memories, lawsuits, and the like. The attempt to objectify phenomena that are primarily internal and not subject to external validation is foredoomed to failure. And, as I shall attempt to show, there are substantial differences in cognitive style between those who suffer from dissociation, those who treat it, and those who reject it totally. more >>

Dissociative Disorders Dissociative Disorders are characterized by a disturbance in the previously cohesive and unified functions of identity, memory, consciousness, and/or perception of the environment. Four types of Dissociative Disorders are recognized.
  • Dissociative Amnesia is a pervasive loss of memory of significant personal information. Dissociative Fugue is a sudden, unplanned excursion away from ones planned itinerary accompanied by either memory loss; or confusion about, loss of, or assumption of a new identity. Dissociative Identity Disorder was formerly called Multiple Personality Disorder. It is evidenced by two or more separate personalities or identities that control a persons consciousness at different times, with each being amnesic of the other/s. Depersonalization Disorder is evidenced by the sense of being separated from ones cognition's or body without an accompanying breakdown in reality testing.

What is dissociative identity disorder?
Dissociative Identity Disorder used to be called Multiple Personality Disorder. The essential feature of this disorder is a disturbance in the normally integrative functions of identity, memory, or consciousness, according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-IV (DSM-IV). This manual is used by psychologists to make appropriate clinical diagnoses. The purpose of this article is to explain further the signs and symptoms of the disorder and, in so doing, to erase any myths that may still exist re this 'neurotic' not 'psychotic' illness. Also, tips will be provided as to how to find a qualified licensed therapist to seek further assistance. bodyOffer(32360) The essential purpose of the illness is to establish within the person two or more distinct personalities or personality states. The purpose in establishing these personalities or personality states is to afford the person the ability to cope with trauma, and yet, function in daily activities. In classic cases, two or more fully developed personalities exist; in other cases, there may be one distinct personality and one or more lesser personality state. In classic cases of the illness, the personalities or personality states each have unique memories, behavior patterns and social relationships. This separateness in functioning affords the person the ability to adopt new learning or to access a new role. The purpose of the separation allows the person to not express prior feelings and difficulties that were a consequence of the trauma. In other words, the person has learned to compartmentalize the trauma as well as who they were when the trauma occurred.

Hope for Dissociative Identity Disorder
Hello, my name is Judy Dragon It was 1994 when the Creator and my Inner Guides took me through a most transformative nine month birthing process - I gave birth to one ME. All my personalities came into one. Though this incredible expression of divine healing was profound, it was also devastating to my reality. Lossing over twenty-eight children that had always been there to save my life, would take months to grieve and learn how to function differently. In order to find support and share my own story, I found a wonderful friend, who also integrated at the same time, to help me write a book. Terry Popp Ph.D. and I, Judy Dragon, recently birthed and published our new creation, Multiple Joumeys to One: Spiritual Stories of Integrating from Dissociative Identity Disorder. Our book offers eight personal and courageous joumeys which explore the spiritual and psychological healing and integration of Dissociative Identity Disorder. Some of the stories discuss Shamanic work. Although the writers focus their stories on the integration/fusion process of their many inside people rather than on the abuse, some of their backgrounds include incest, familial torture, Satanic Ritual Abuse and programming. By learning to acknowledge, accept, and love each aspect of themselves, the writers exemplify the possibility of healing our divided, compartmentalized world.

(formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder)
What is Dissociation?
Dissociation is a mental process where there is a lack of connection between, thoughts, feelings, actions or sense of identity. This disconnection is termed splitting and exists at a sub-conscious level. The process of dissociation exists on a continuum. Mild dissociation experiences are common such as daydreaming or “highway hypnosis”, where a person drives from ‘A’ to ‘B’ but does not remember the details of the journey. What is Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID/MPD)? DID/MPD is the severe and chronic experience at the opposite end of the spectrum. The dissociative process may lead to discrete states that can take on identities of their own. These states are called “alternate personalities” or “alters” and are internal members of the “system”. Changes between these personalities, or states of consciousness, are described as ”switching”. This behaviour was an originally adaptive, healthy reaction to intolerable situations. However, in adult life dissociative behaviours can be problematic. People living with DID/MPD have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), in fact it has been suggested that DID/MPD is itself a chronic form of PTSD.
