Türk's syndrome Associated persons:
Siegmund Türk

Description:
A partial manifestation of Stilling-Türk-Duane syndrome, referred to as a separate entity by one author only. This syndrome relates to a fibrous degeneration of the external rectus muscle with limitation of abduction of the affected eye beyond the mid-line and retraction of the bulb upon adduction. This limitation of muscular function is one of the component of Duane's retraction syndrome; hence, Türk's syndrome is regarded as an incomplete form of the latter. A birth injury has been suggested as one of the more likely causes.

Learning Objectives: To present an overview of inherited disorders of ocular motility. To discuss the role molecular genetics can have in enhancing our understanding of these disorders. To demonstrate these techniques applied to forms of paralytic strabismus, including Möbius syndrome, Duane syndrome, congenital ptosis, and congenital fibrosis of the extraocular muscles.

Tolosa Hunt Syndrome OCULAR MOTILITY DISORDERS MeSH description Disorders that feature impairment of eye movements as a primary manifestation of disease. These conditions may be divided into infranuclear, nuclear, and supranuclear disorders. Diseases of the eye muscles or oculomotor cranial nerves (III, IV, and VI) are considered infranuclear. Nuclear disorders are caused by disease of the oculomotor, trochlear, or abducens nuclei in the brain stem. Supranuclear disorders are produced by dysfunction of higher order sensory and motor systems that control eye movements, including neural networks in the cerebral cortex; basal ganglia; cerebellum; and brain stem. Ocular torticollis refers to a head tilt that is caused by an ocular misalignment. Opsoclonus refers to rapid, conjugate oscillations of the eyes in multiple directions, which may occur as a parainfectious or paraneoplastic condition (e.g., opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome). (Adams et al., Principles of Neurology, 6th ed, p240).

Visual Psychophysics and Perception (VPP)
This group performs research on basic visual mechanisms from the early stages (e.g. edge-finding) to higher cognitive processes (attention and learning), and is closely involved with the CPO group in applying basic knowledge to clinically-oriented projects, mostly at Moorfields Eye Hospital. The group is led by Michael Morgan (MM), and includes Manfred Fahle (MF), Larry Weiskrantz (LW), Joshua Solomon (JS), Janet Wolf (JW) and Alison Finlay (AF). Support has been obtained from EPSRC, BBSRC and the BIOMED 2 Program of the European Community which funded the VIPROM (Visual Processing of Movement) consortium led by MM and included MF. Current grants support two postdocs and one RA. The basic skills of the group are in Psychophysics, Mathematical Modelling (especially Signal Detection theory), and Cognitive Neuroscience (MM is an Honorary member of the Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience at UCL). Further information: Examples of our current research are: Michael J. Morgan
