Eating Disorder Referral and Information Center. Males and eating disordersSome Basic Facts and Findings. eating disorders affect both men and women.
http://www.edreferral.com/males_eating_disorders.htm
Eating Disorder Referral and Information Center Males and Eating Disorders: Some Basic Facts and Findings Approximately 7-10 million women across the country suffer from eating disorders. Most research into these serious disorders has been conducted on females. However, as many as a million men may also struggle with the diseases! Eating disorders include extreme attitudes, emotions and behaviors surrounding both food and weight issues. They include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder. All are serious emotional and physical problems that can have devastating effects and life-threatening consequences. Eating disorders affect both men and women. While eating disorders are less common in men, approximately 10% of those suffering from eating disorders are male (Wolf, 1991). Studies also demonstrate that cultural and media pressures on men for the "ideal body" are the rise. This increased focus on body shape, size and physical appearance will likely contribute to increased numbers of eating disorder in males. Research indicates that eating disorders in males are clinically similar to eating disorders in females (Schneider & Argas, 1987). Body image concerns appear to be one the strongest variables in predicting eating disorders in males. Studies have demonstrated (Wertheim et al, 1992) that the drive for thinness was a more important predictor of weight loss behaviors than psychological and/or family variables (this desire was true of both adolescent males and females).

The sexual competition hypothesis for eating disorders
Abed, Riadh T (1998) The sexual competition hypothesis for eating disorders. British Journal of Medical Psychology Full text available as:
HTML
Abstract
A hypothesis is presented for eating disorders that contends that these syndromes together with the phenomenon of the pursuit of thinness are manifestations of female intra-sexual competition. It is argued that the present-day environment of Western coutries presnts a range of conditions that have led to the overactivation or disruption of the archaic female sexual strategy of maximising 'mate value'. The hypothesis deals with the ultimate level of causation and is therefore compatible with a range of theories dealing with the proximate level of causation. Keywords: eating disorders, anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, intra-sexual competition, thinness Subjects: Psychology Evolutionary Psychology

28. Self Injury And Eating Disorders
A short glimpse into the life of a teenager who has suffered abuse and self injures but who is determined to survive.

Self Injury and Eating Disorders
I have put this page on my site as it deals with the subject of self harm and eating disorders. These are some what tabooed topics and the more awareness there is the better. For those of you who read this and know about self harm/injury please make sure you are safe as reading this may be triggering.
"Self-injury is used to help the individual cope, the act of injuring oneself is also used to help cope with, block out, and release built up feelings and emotions. Self-injury is probably the most widely misunderstood forms of self harm and there are many myths associated with it, which can make it difficult for people to reach out and ask for help. Self-injury (self-harm, self-mutilation) can be defined as the attempt to deliberately cause harm to one's own body and the injury is usually severe enough to cause tissue damage. This is not a conscious attempt at suicide, though some people may see it that way. It has been reported that many people who self-injure have a history of sexual or physical abuse, but that is not always the case. Some may come from broken homes, alcoholic homes, have emotionally absent parents, etc. There are many factors that could cause someone to self-injure as a way to cope. There are three types of self-injury. The rarest and most extreme form is Major self-mutilation. This form usually results in permanent disfigurement, i.e. castration or limb amputation. Another form is Stereo typic self-mutilation which usually consists of head banging, eyeball pressing and biting. The third and most common form is Superficial self-mutilation which usually involves cutting, burning, hair-pulling, bone breaking, hitting, interference with wound healing and basically any method used to harm oneself.

    What is food addiction?
How would I know if I or a relative or friend had food addiction or a compulsive eating disorder?
Compulsive eating and excessive weight are matters which should be taken seriously, although many women in our society (and increasingly men) seem to be constantly struggling with diets and efforts to lose weight. Some sections of the media and the 'slimming industry' seem to encourage this. People who have a serious weight problem have often gone through a number of different diets or been to various slimming organisations without achieving benefit or long-term weight loss. There may be complicated emotional reasons for their compulsive eating, for which they need expert help. Priory Home GP Centre Information Centre Purchaser Centre

An updated policy from the American Academy of Pediatrics stresses that while exercise is important and should be promoted in girls for health and enjoyment, pediatricians should be aware of health problems that may occur in female athletes. The policy covers important health issues that impact female athletes including disordered eating, menstrual dysfunction and decreased bone mineral density (osteoporosis). The original AAP statement on female athletes only addressed menstrual dysfunction, also called "amenorrhea." Coming to terms UConn's Ralph struggled with eating disorder
Connecticut basketball star Shea Ralph struggled with anorexia nervosa, which depleted her to the point that she needed help getting out of bed. After a knee injury in 1997, Ralph said, she was afraid she would gain weight. "I flipped," Ralph said in Sunday's Hartford Courant. "And I just didn't eat." Exercise excess? Experts say there can be too much of a good thing
Jessica Weiner’s exercise routine was unlike that of most 14-year-olds, an age when many girls drift away from exercise. Weiner spent four to six hours every day working out. She devoted the wee hours of the morning to the gym, returning after school to take a turn on every exercise machine. “Bike, treadmill, stair machine, weights — you name it, I did it,” she says.

References ating is controlled by many factors, including appetite, food availability, family, peer, and cultural practices, and attempts at voluntary control. Dieting to a body weight leaner than needed for health is highly promoted by current fashion trends, sales campaigns for special foods, and in some activities and professions. Eating disorders involve serious disturbances in eating behavior, such as extreme and unhealthy reduction of food intake or severe overeating, as well as feelings of distress or extreme concern about body shape or weight. Researchers are investigating how and why initially voluntary behaviors, such as eating smaller or larger amounts of food than usual, at some point move beyond control in some people and develop into an eating disorder. Studies on the basic biology of appetite control and its alteration by prolonged overeating or starvation have uncovered enormous complexity, but in the long run have the potential to lead to new pharmacologic treatments for eating disorders. Eating disorders are not due to a failure of will or behavior; rather, they are real, treatable medical illnesses in which certain maladaptive patterns of eating take on a life of their own. The main types of eating disorders are anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.

Obsessions with food and weight are often attempts to cope with unresolved emotional issues such as depression, rage, powerlessness, and loss. Art therapy is a special tool that can help provide access to those hidden feelings that contain the key to our struggles. In group or individual sessions, we will employ a variety of art therapy techniques specifically designed to explore the issues that have led to compulsive eating, binging, purging, starving, or laxative abuse. Emphasis will be on discovering new ways to nurture oneself. Special attention paid to gender issues. Previous art experience is not necessary

The aims of this site. Child hood sexual abuse is far more common than many would like to think. Here in the UK it works out at just over 400 people a day abused for the first time. It usually happens with someone known to the child, and trusted by the family, and in very many case's is even a member of the child's own family. It happens to both females and males, and the abuser can also be either male or female and often is done by both. Sometimes it happens just the once, but sadly it often goes on for weeks or even many years.
