In a culture where thinness is too often equated with physical attractiveness, success, and happiness, nearly everyone has dealt with issues regarding the effec t their weight and body shape can have on their self-image. However, eating disorders are not about dieting or vanity; they're complex psychological disorders in which an individual's eating patterns are developedand then habitually maintainedin an attempt to cope with other problems in their life.
Each year, more than 5 million Americans are affected by serious and often life-threatening eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, binge-eating, bulimia nervosa, compulsive eating, obesity, and pica. Eating disorders know no class, cultural, or gender boundaries and can affect men, women, adolescents, and even children, from all walks of life.

Does Eating Rule Your Life? Eating disorders, such as compulsive or binge eating, anorexia, bulimia and dieting failure affect millions of people in every walk of life. Sadly, people attempt to control eating disorders by dieting, fasting, over-exercising, using slimming pills, diuretics, laxatives and purging. These strategies can produce short term weight control, but they do not provide an answer to eating disorders and can often make things even worse because the underlying problem needs to be addressed. There are literally thousands of people suffering from eating disorders, harbouring persistent weight problems and obsessed with food and weight. Such eating disorders can have damaging effects. Control of eating and weight is central to your physical and emotional well-being. Click here to learn how we can help. The National Centre For Eating Disorders

The Sexual Competition Hypothesis For Eating Disorders Evolutionary science has made few inroads into psychiatry despite the fact that over 130 years have passed since Darwin’s Origin The hypothesis on eating disorders presented here is derived from the evolutionary theory of human sexuality. The present hypothesis is based upon the assumption that, besides shaping anatomical systems, selection also designs psychological and behavioural adaptations that are just as important for the organisms survival and reproductive success (Lorenz, 1937; Dawkins,1982). Hypothesis: The present hypothesis is based upon the following assumptions: 1. In the ancestral environment, the female shape was a generally reliable indicator of the female’s reproductive history and hence her future reproductive potential.

When is it Time for a Parent to Take Action? Many parents suspect or see their child involved in eating disordered behavior, but they don't know if they should say anything or what action to take, if any. Here are some extremely helpful step-by-step guidelines for parents, courtesy of Amy Spahr, program director of Remuda Ranch Programs for Anorexia and Bulimia. From our Bulletin Boards Need Support for Food Addiction Pookycat wrote: HI! This is the first time I'm posting here. I'm 24 years old and I'm compulsive overeater, but I haven't been that way always. As a small girl, I was thin and I never thought about food as more than sustinace for me. T EENAGERS W ITH E ATING D ISORDERS No. 2 (10/92) (Updated 8/98) O vereating related to tension, poor nutritional habits and food fads are relatively common eating problems for youngsters. In addition, two psychiatric eating disorders, anorexia nervosa and bulimia, are on the increase among teenage girls and young women and often run in families. In the United States, as many as 10 in 100 young women suffer from an eating disorder. These two eating disorders also occur in boys, but much less often. The child and adolescent psychiatrist is trained to evaluate, diagnose, and treat these psychiatric disorders which are characterized by a preoccupation with food and a distortion of body image. Parents frequently ask how to identify symptoms of anorexia nervosa and bulimia. Unfortunately, many teenagers successfully hide these serious and sometimes fatal disorders from their families for many months or years. Parents should be on the lookout for various symptoms and warning signs of anorexia nervosa and bulimia:
  • A teenager with anorexia nervosa is typically a perfectionist and a high achiever in school. At the same time, she suffers from low self-esteem

    Introduction
Message from the National Institute of Mental Health
Research conducted and supported by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) brings hope to millions of people who suffer from mental illness and to their families and friends. In many years of work with animals as well as human subjects, researchers have advanced our understanding of the brain and vastly expanded the capability of mental health professionals to diagnose, treat, and prevent mental and brain disorders. Now, in the 1990s, which the President and Congress have declared the "Decade of the Brain," we stand at the threshold of a new era in brain and behavioral sciences. Through research in animals and humans, we will learn even more about mental disorders such as depression, manic-depressive illness, schizophrenia, panic disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. And we will be able to use this knowledge to develop new therapies that can help more people overcome mental illness. The National Institute of Mental Health is a part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Federal Government's primary agency for biomedical and behavioral research. NIH is a component of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
