Bridging the Gaps in a Shrinking Globe William T. Close writes books that open the hearts and broaden the perspectives of those who read them for they deal with the human condition in very different parts of the world. "The earth is not a resting place. Man has elected to fight, not necessarily for himself, but for a process of emotional, intellectual, and ethical growth that goes on forever. To grow in the midst of dangers is the fate of the human race, because it is the law of the spirit."

"Message received. Thank you," replied Sister Augustina.
Jules continued, "Everybody here prays for you, Yambuku. Keep up your courage. Stay in touch with us. Take the radio with you."
"Thank you, Lisala. Over and out."
Augustina sat at the radio for a long time, absently fingering her rosary. They would not be flown out. It would be hard to tell Veronica and Antoine. They had all touched the bodies and linen of the sick and dying. There was no hope for them. When they saw Gérard’s terrible purple face, they shouted: "You and your gloves and all your beliefs in microbes. . . it is not that, it is not that at all." They threw the gloves and gowns onto the cadaver. "You whites always say there are germs and viruses, but we know differently."

Introduction
Ebola is one of the most lethal viruses that infects primates. It has a mortality rate that ranges from 53-88%. It is endemic to Africa and to the Philippines. Due to its highly pathogenic nature, scientific research conducted on Ebola must be conducted in a Biosafety Level 4 laboratory (AIDS/HIV is a Biosafetly Level 2 virus). The constraint on scientific research that its nature has dictated has resulted in many significant gaps in what is known about it, and even larger gaps in what has been published about it. Its highly pathogenic nature has also resulted in a notable amount of misinformation that has been published. This web site is designed to present, in a review style, the data, previously published and unpublished, known about it to fill the knowledge gaps and to correct the misinformation.

When magnified several thousand times by an electron microscope, these viruses have the appearance of long filaments or threads. Dr. Weeks has had a distinguished medical and military career with the U.S. Air Force Medical Corps. He began military service as the youngest flight surgeon in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. After 15 years of military service, during which he served in senior posts, including Hospital Commander at Bitburg Air Force Base, Germany, Dr. Weeks retired and entered private practice. During the past two decades, he has focused his studies on the threat of biological and chemical agents as weapons of war. Dr. Weeks has lectured and written numerous articles on infectious diseases and biological warfare. A significant problem in dealing with biological attacks is that we may not be aware we have been subjected to such an attack until several days or weeks later.

Posted to the web February 10, 2003 Kampala Congolese health officials said Thursday at least 16 people died in the northern part of the country from the Ebola virus since the first of the year and they fear a wider outbreak of the deadly illness. Health ministry officials, speaking in the capital Brazzaville, said there could be additional outbreaks around the villages Kele and Mbou, about 800 kilometres north of the capital. The cases were discovered when tests confirmed that gorillas in the region had died after contracting the Ebola virus. Investigators determined that villagers got sick after eating meat from the infected gorillas.

Ebola is a filovirus named after a river in Zaire, its first site of discovery. This filovirus is usually fatal, and it affects monkeys, apes and humans. Filoviruses are string-shaped, with a little hook or loop at one end. Another filovirus is the Marbug virus, which gives similar symptoms to Ebola, but the chance of surving an infection of Marbug virus is higher.
