Welcome to SkinCell International Forum for Skin Disorders
An international non-profit discussion forum for ALL skin complaints including Acne, Eczema, Psoriasis, Rosacea and many others. Open to sufferers, their family and friends.
Origins of SkinCell
SkinCell was established in August 2002 because we saw that whilst there are many very informative and resourceful sites on the Web, very few concentrated on the psychological trauma that we skin sufferers face. The majority of those great sites specialise in a single skin condition, a few concentrate on all dermatological conditions, even fewer address the serious issue of patient well-being. Here at SkinCell we have attempted to make available to all skin sufferers and their families an open and free forum where they can discuss any skin condition they choose.
The Forum
SkinCell offers a lively and friendly Forum for its members including:
  • Skin and General Health discussions Member Profiles; including Username, Country of origin, personal avatars, home web site links, posting history etc

Dermatitis
Dermatitis affects about one in every five people at some time in their lives. It results from a variety of different causes and has various patterns. The terms "dermatitis" and "eczema" are often used interchangeably. Dermatitis can be "acute" or "chronic" or both. Acute eczema refers to a rapidly evolving red rash which may be blistered and swollen. Chronic dermatitis refers to a longstanding irritable area. It is often darker than the surrounding skin, thickened (lichenified) and much scratched. Psychological stresses can provoke or aggravate dermatitis, presumably by suppressing normal immune mechanisms.

Discoid Eczema
Discoid eczema, also known as nummular dermatitis , is a skin condition which can occur at any age. The cause of discoid eczema is unknown.
  • Minor skin injury such as an insect bite or a burn may start it off. It may be termed "varicose eczema" when it runs along the leg veins and result in gravitational eczema Hypersensitivity to bacteria on the skin results in crusted patches. Dry skin in the winter months can cause dry non-itchy round patches.
It can affect any part of the body particularly the lower leg. One or many patches appear, and may persist for weeks or months. The majority of patches are round or oval, hence the name "discoid" or "nummular" dermatitis, which means coin or disc-shaped dermatitis . They can be several centimetres across, or as small as two millimetres. The skin between the patches is usually normal, but may be dry and irritable. Discoid eczema may be extremely itchy, or scarcely noticeable. When the patches clear, they may leave marks for some weeks of months which are darker or sometimes paler than the normal skin tone. Sometimes patch testing is arranged to see whether there could be a contact allergy responsible for the dermatitis. In most cases no specific allergy can be found. Discoid eczema does not run in families, and unlike

  • Eczema is a common skin disease. It includes different types of dermatitis, or inflamed (red, itchy rash) skin.
What causes eczema?
  • The exact cause of eczema is not known. If a parent has eczema, allergies, or asthma, their children are more like to have eczema. Symptoms may be triggered by contact with materials such as dust, down comforters, feathers, wool, or perfumed lotions. Sweaty activities, stress, or quick changes of temperature also may cause itching. Very rarely, symptoms can be triggered by an allergic reaction to a food or pet. Avoiding the food or pet may improve symptoms but won't cure the eczema. Triggers and symptoms are different for each person.

Eczema
Published by BUPA's Health Information Team
February, 2003 Download this factsheet Eczema, also known as dermatitis, describes skin conditions where there is irritation or inflammation of the skin. It affects 1 in 12 people in the UK at some time in their life.
What is eczema?
There are two main categories of eczema. Contact eczema, also known as exogenous eczema, occurs when substances or chemicals cause irritation that leads to an allergic reaction in the skin. "Atopic" eczema (endogenous eczema), is when there is a genetic, or inherited, tendency to develop the condition.
The general symptoms of eczema
Eczema makes the skin itchy and dry and sometimes scaly. The skin can crack, becoming red and inflamed and leaving it prone to infection. Infection by bacteria living on the surface of the skin can cause weeping of fluid ("wet" eczema) and crusting or scabbing. The areas of the body that are affected differ depending on the type of eczema.
Causes of eczema
Often the cause of the eczema is unknown, or there may be a number of different factors working together. Eczema often runs in families, but it can not spread from one person to another.

Eczema: Causes and Treatments
My 5-month-old has always had facial eczema which her pediatrician refers to as a "mild" condition. We have been using an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream every day. This is not much help. I am really reluctant to use any prescription cortisone creams since her face may get addicted to it. Even though it may be considered "mild", her face hasn't improved. Some days she scratches all over her face and the condition gets worse. The eczema is also on her legs. The eczema doesn't seem to be improving. What can I do?
