Most of us started smoking back in the 40's and 50's. The money spent, even back then, by the tobacco companies, were in the billions of dollars, just in advertisements and cigarette handouts. Even now, their advertising dollars are directed to the younger generation. If you would like a sampling of the older advertisements, we are thankful to Chickenhead.com for making these available to us. Just click on Cigarette Ads

I have a disease know as emphysema. I would like to give all teenagers a brief description of my life as a person with emphysema. The facts that I provide to you will be a true-life experience of my trials and tribulation of my disease. Young people sometimes do not realize that smoking can destroy their future. They do not understand the problems that can develop from smoking. They do not understand the affect it can have on their health. When I was a young person, I never realized that smoking could diminish the most important factor in my life my breathing. When you can't breath you begin to realize how insignificant a cigarette can be in meeting your daily habit. I wish now I had never had a habit of smoking. I realize now breathing is a life function you can not live without, but cigarettes you can. If you had endured the pain I have suffered throughout the last ten years, you would never smoke a cigarette. I have had several collapsed lungs. I have had my back cut open, and had my lung partially removed. I have also spent months at a time in a hospital away from my family. The suffering is still not over; I now have to have my other lung partially removed. This procedure will prolong my life, for a later lung transplant.

Question: I am a 43 year old female who has been treated for hiatil hernia/gerd since 1991 nothing completely helped. I would really like to know your opinion of the meds the dr. has me on. At night it's worse of all i can't sleep because I have alot of trouble breathing. I have tried everything they told me to and I feel like I've swallowed a golf ball all the time. Answer: You didn't name the drugs. Usual drugs are drugs to decrease acid(Zantac, etc at first and then Prilosec or Prevacid) and then drugs to decrease reflux. This is usually propulsid since reglan(the other) can have long term neurologic side effects. Lastly is surgical repairs. Usually done through the laparoscope by putting a ring type structure around the esophagus and keeping the stomach in the abdomen. Emphysema [posted 8/6/98]
Question: I have suddenly developed a form of emphysema, with difficulty breathing, sometimes with very little exertion. At other times I can perform strenuous exercise with no apparent adverse effects. I was taking doxycycline about eight months ago and was trying to be careful in avoiding the sun. One day I went for a walk and forgot a hat on a sunny day and was stricken with exhaustion, high fever (105 degrees) and had to be taken to the emergency room. Is doxycycline a possible culprit for my emphysema?

Definition
Emphysema is a chronic respiratory disease where there is over-inflation of the air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs, causing a decrease in lung function, and often, breathlessness. Description Emphysema is the most common cause of death from respiratory disease in the United States, and is the fourth most common cause of death overall. There are 1.8 million Americans with the disease, which ranks fifteenth among chronic conditions that cause limitations of activity. The disease is usually caused by smoking , but a small number of cases are caused by an inherited defect. Normally functioning lungs are elastic, efficiently expanding and recoiling as air passes freely through the bronchus to the alveoli, where oxygen is moved into the blood and carbon dioxide is filtered out. When a person inhales cigarette smoke or certain other irritants, his or her immune system responds by releasing substances that are meant to defend the lungs against the smoke. These substances can also attack the cells of the lungs, but the body normally inhibits such action with the release of other substances. In smokers and those with the inherited defect, however, no such prevention occurs and the lung tissue is damaged in such a way that it loses its elasticity. The small passageways (bronchioles) leading to the alveoli collapse, trapping air within the alveoli. The alveoli, unable to recoil efficiently and move the air out, over expand and rupture. As the disease progresses, coughing and

Emphysema and COPD
Did you know that Cigarette Smoking causes more cases of emphysema than all other causes combined? In the early stages of emphysema, stopping smoking completely arrests the disease and returns lung function to normal. In advanced disease, kicking the habit still improves lung function and decreases cough and shortness of breath.
Doctors and nurses at C.A.R.E. Clinical Research use the latest techniques to help you stop smoking. These include drugs to suppress the smoking urge, nicotine replacement, and behavioral therapy.

(Please Note: Lung Volume Reduction Surgery is not currently available at Cheshire Medical Center or Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. If interested, you should discuss with your physician whether this procedure is appropriate for you and where the nearest center is located.) Lung Reduction Surgery is a procedure designed to improve respiratory function in a select group of patients with severe bullous emphysema. In patient with emphysema normal lung tissue is often replaced by large "bullae". Bullae are thin walled balloon-like structures that can expand to compress relatively normal lung causing further reduction in lung capacity. Bullae more often occur in the upper portions of the lung and when they are localized or are very large their surgical removal (bullectomy) may allow better function in the remaining lung. For other emphysema patients bullae may be distributed more homogeneously throughout the lung. In these patients the lungs may also become over inflated for the size of the chest cavity leaving inadequate space for expansion. By surgically reducing the size of the lungs some patients have noted significant improvement in symptoms due to this over expansion and loss of elasticity.

Scientists find clue to why few smokers get emphysema Thursday, March 13, 2003 By Byron Spice, Post-Gazette Science Editor Scientists may be closing in on the answer to an old smoking-and-health question: Why do only a minority of heavy smokers develop emphysema? Genetic differences are an obvious possibility and researchers have previously fingered a gene that appears to be key to developing the chronic lung disease. But a study published today in the journal Nature suggests that other genes not previously suspected may play a role that's just as important. The results are exciting, said Dr. Anita Roberts, chief of the Laboratory of Cell Regulation and Carcinogenesis at the National Cancer Institute, because they suggest a new approach to developing drugs to treat or prevent emphysema. An estimated 2 percent of adult men and 1 percent of adult women suffer emphysema, which together with chronic bronchitis is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States and a major cause of disability.

BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS. The idea that fish and fish oils may protect against lung disease developed from early studies of the dietary habits of Greenland Eskimos. Dr. D.F. Horrobin hypothesized that the high content of omega-3 fatty acids in the Eskimo diet is at least partially responsible for the low prevalence of lung disease in this population group. This makes biological sense inasmuch as omega-3 fatty acids (notably from fish and fish oils) are known to inhibit the synthesis of the inflammatory eicosanoids involved in lung diseases. Dr. Schwartz concludes that there is a good case for fish and fish oils being protective against the development of chronic lung diseases, but that more research is needed to establish conclusive proof of benefits.
Schwartz, Joel. Role of polyunsaturated fatty acids in lung disease. American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Vol. 71 (suppl), January 2000, pp. 393S-96S Intravenous fish oil infusion safe for CF patients
NEW YORK, NY. Seriously ill cystic fibrosis (CF) patients cannot absorb fats and other nutrients properly and therefore often need infusions of essential fatty acids. These infusions are most often based on linoleic acid as many CF patients have been found to have a deficiency of this omega-6 fatty acid. There is now substantial evidence that long-chain omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oils can suppress inflammatory processes such as those involved in CF.

What is emphysema? Emphysema, short for pulmonary emphysema, is a chronic lung condition in which alveoli, or air sacs, may be:
  • destroyed narrowed collapsed stretched over-inflated
Over-inflation of the air-sacs is a result of a breakdown of the walls of the alveoli, and causes a decrease in respiratory function and breathlessness. Damage to the air sacs is irreversible and results in permanent "holes" in the tissues of the lower lungs. What causes emphysema? Emphysema does not develop suddenly, but occurs very gradually. The lung has a system of elastic fibers that allow the lungs to expand and contract. Pulmonary emphysema occurs when a breakdown in the chemical balance that protects the lungs against the destruction of the elastic fibers occurs. There are a number of reasons for the breakdown in chemical balance:
  • smoking exposure to air pollution irritating fumes and dusts on the job a rare inherited form of the disease called alpha 1-antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency-related pulmonary emphysema, or early onset pulmonary emphysema
