Equine encephalomyelitis By Jennifer Kunz, AnimalForum.com staff E quine encephalomyelitis is an inflammation of the brain and spinal cord. This disease not only affects horses, but is also deadly for humans. The virus was isolated, characterized, and vaccines were produced in the 1930s. The two forms currently active in the United States are Eastern equine encephalomyelitis (EEE) and Western equine encephalomyelitis (WEE). The viruses responsible for causing these diseases are members of a family of viruses called the alphavirus. WEE is most active in the western United States and parts of the Midwest. WEE was responsible for the death of 180,000 horses between 1931 and 1938 in the San Joaquin Valley, Calif. There have been isolated cases in every state west of the Appalachians, parts of western Canada, and in Central and South America. EEE has an eastern United States distribution. There have been isolated cases in Michigan and Wisconsin as well as outbreaks in the Caribbean, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Panama, and Central and South America.

What is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or ME? Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is a serious and complex illness characterised by incapacitating fatigue (experienced as profound exhaustion and extremely poor stamina), neurological problems and certain other symptoms.  By definition the condition does not improve with rest and persists for a minimum of 6 months.  In many cases it lasts for years and severely impairs a person's ability to function. CFS is also known as Tapanui Flu, Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction syndrome (CFIDS) and myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME). What are the main symptoms of CFS? The hallmark of the disorder is the onset of fatigue that significantly reduces daily activity in a previously healthy person. Other characteristic symptoms include: - impaired memory or concentration; sore throat, tender lymph nodes, muscle pain, multi joint pain without joint swelling or redness; headaches of a new type, pattern or severity; unrefreshing sleep and post-extertional malaise lasting more than 24 hours. : What exactly is Acute Disceminated Encephalomyelitis? And how does it differ from MS? I have been having problems with balance and cannot walk a straight line. A CT Scan, MRI, and Lumbar Puncture have been done and these two possible diagnosis have been mentioned. And, could it be more difficult to treat with someone who has Addisons Disease? Research into the osteopathic relief of symptoms of ME (Myalgic encephalomyelitis)/CFS(Chronic Fatigue Syndrome). ME (Myalgic encephalomyelitis
http://www.forme-cfs.co.uk/current_research.html
M.E. (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis) , also known as C.F.S. (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) , is a chronic disorder which leaves the patient suffering from intense lethargy, pain in the muscles and joints, plus mental confusion and many other serious and unpleasant symptoms. It often leaves the patient with long-term disability and facing a miserable existence. At least 400,000 people in the U.K. alone suffer from M.E., and it even affects children as young as five years of age. Many patients become bedridden for long periods, and some need to be hospitalised.
Since the original publication of the 'Osteopathy and M.E.' booklet, many interesting discoveries have been made during Raymond Perrin's research at the University of Salford, U.K.
Firstly clinical trials scientifically demonstrated that osteopathic treatment did indeed help with symptoms associated with M.E. [Perrin RN, Edwards J and Hartley P (January/February 1998). An evaluation of the effectiveness of osteopathic treatment on symptoms associated with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis. A preliminary report. Journal of Medical Engineering and Technology, 22 (1), 1-13.]
At present we are investigating why osteopathy does help.

Eastern Equine Encephalomyelitis Virus Infection in a Horse from California
Robert P. Franklin,* Hailu Kinde,† Michele T. Jay, ‡ Laura D. Kramer,† Emily-Gene N. Green,† Robert E. Chiles,† Eileen Ostlund,§ Stan Husted,‡ Jonathan Smith,¶ and Michael D. Parker¶
National Veterinary Service Laboratory, Ames, Iowa, USA; and U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases, Fort Detrick, Maryland, USA A yearling quarter horse, which was raised in southern California, received routine vaccinations for prevention of infection by Eastern equine encephalomyelitis virus (EEEV). One week later, severe neurologic signs developed, and the horse was humanely destroyed. A vaccine-related encephalomyelitis was later suspected. A final diagnosis of EEEV infection was established on the basis of acute onset of the neurologic signs, histopathologic and serologic testing, and isolation and molecular characterization of EEEV from brain tissue The vaccine was extensively tested for viral inactivation. Nucleotide sequences from the vaccine and the virus isolated in the affected horse were also compared. In California, arboviral encephalomyelitides are rarely reported, and EEEV infection has not previously been documented. This report describes the occurrence of EEEV infection in the horse and the investigation to determine the source of infection, which was not definitively identified.

These facts are of interest to many `healthy' users, but even more so to those who suffer from Asthma, M.E. (myalgic encephalomyelitis), or other allergies and sensitivities. Sufferers from these ailments may be sensitive to infinitesimal amounts of toxic chemicals such as formaldehyde, isocyanates or other VOC's and their avoidance is essential. This is where ECOS can help.
The ECOS range was invented and commercialised in 1989 by two U.K. scientists who were affected themselves by VOC's - one had asthma and the other had M.E.(myalgic encephalomyelitis) and M.C.S.
The ECOS range now numbers nearly 3000 products and is supplied mail - order on a `next day delivery' basis (all methods of payment accepted, including credit/debit cards).
ECOS has been used in countless schools, hotels, restaurants, clinics, hospitals, ecoprojects, offices, cinemas, private homes and other projects where ultimate air purity is required.

A CALL FOR ACTION: THE RECOGNITION OF MYALGIC ENCEPHALOMYELITIS AS A SERIOUS AND DEBILITATING DISEASE
View Current Signatures Sign the Petition To: United States Department of Health and Human Services, National Institutes of Health, and Centers for Disease Control We, the undersigned, respectfully demand that Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), an internationally recognized neurological disease, be also formally recognized as a distinct clinical entity in the United States by the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control. It is time to make the case definition/diagnostic criteria explicit in the name.
Currently, most patients are diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, a poorly defined, misunderstood, controversial syndrome which remains underfunded and underresearched. The name Chronic Fatigue Syndrome itself has trivialized the illness and further subjected these patients to incredulity and ridicule. The CFS rubric has not only neglected and failed to help those with ME, it has harmed them. ME patients will not improve with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or graded exercise (in fact, exercise will make them worse) - yet these are considered treatments for CFS. Simply "renaming" CFS will not solve this problem.
ME should not be considered a subset of CFS, for the hallmarks of ME will not be present in the population of CFS patients once the Ramsay criteria are established in the US. Patients with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis under the CFS criteria must wait for six (6) months before acquiring a diagnosis, a critical period in which possible recovery is diminished by lack of proper treatment. The ME definition does not require a six month wait. (See Ramsay Definition at: http://www.egroups.co.uk/message/ME-itis_NOW/2.)

C853 - AVIAN ENCEPHALOMYELITIS
Nature of the disease Avian encephalomyelitis (AE) is a viral disease of young chickens caused by a virus from the Hepatovirus family and characterised by central nervous system signs (Epidemic Tremors). It can be the cause of significant economic loss. Classification FAO List C disease Susceptible species AE occurs naturally in chickens, turkeys, pheasants and Japanese quail. Distribution AE has been reported from virtually all developed countries, including New Zealand, Australia, USA and New Caledonia. Clinical signs Chickens of all ages are susceptible, but clinical signs of encephalitis only develop in those younger than four weeks. The disease is similar in turkeys and chickens. Under field conditions disease is most common in the 1–2 week age group. Following initial dull expression of the eyes, the following signs are seen: - progressive ataxia with the chick losing control of legs, sitting on its haunches and falling onto its side; - tremor of the head and neck. Ataxia progresses to paralysis and death results from inability to feed or drink, or through being trampled.

HAEMAGGLUTINATING ENCEPHALOMYELITIS VIRUS
Nature of the disease Haemagglutinating encephalomyelitis (vomiting and wasting disease) is a viral disease of pigs caused by a Coronavirus. Two different syndromes are recognised:
  • An acute encephalomyelitis (HEV) in piglets up to 4–7 days of age, A vomiting and wasting disease (VWD) in slightly older piglets (4–14 days).
Classification SPC List D disease Susceptible species Pigs are the only susceptible species. Distribution The virus is widespread in Europe and North America. It has been reported in Australia. Clinical signs HEV:
  • Sudden onset in young pigs (less than 7 days), Transient fever, Depression, Loss of condition, Hyperaesthesia, Trembling, ataxia, Convulsions and paddling of the limbs, Sometimes vomiting, Up to 100% of piglets in affected litters die in 1 -3 days.
VWD:
  • Occurs in pigs less than 4 weeks old, Transient fever, Frequent vomiting, Loss of appetite, Constipation, Emaciation, Occasional nervous involvement, Mortality is high, spread over a two week period. Survivors often become runts.
