62. A Child`s Guide To Epilepsy
Features an introduction to the seizure disorder, what makes seizures happen, and how medicine helps prevent epileptic episodes.
http://www.epilepsy.ca/eng/child.html
pilepsy (ep-i-lep-sy) is sometimes called a seizure disorder. A seizure disorder is a kind of illness that only happens sometimes. It's not the kind of illness that makes you feel sick inside. It's not the kind of illness that makes you cough and sneeze. It's not the kind of illness that means you have to stay in bed and have your temperature taken. A child who has epilepsy feels just as healthy as everyone else most of the time. But sometimes she/he may have a seizure. This Website is all about seizures. If you have epilepsy, it's good to find out as much as you can about it. You'll know how your seizures happen You'll know how your medicine works and why you have to take it every day. Then you can tell other boys and girls who might want to know. If there's something on this Website that you don't understand, ask your mom or dad to explain it to you. If you have a special question about your seizure disorder, ask your doctor about it when you go for your next check up.

The story so far: FOLKS was established following several years of hard work and dedication by its founder member, Vicki Horsewell. Vicki established the Landau Kleffner UK Parent Support Group with the assistance of the UK national charity Contact-a-Family , which seeks to support families of children with rare conditions by putting them in touch with other similarly affected families. After two years it become clear that the number of families of children with LKS or related conditions in the UK has risen to mean that a national group centred around these children's needs was possible. Therefore a group of concerned parents and professionals, who had been involved in the support group, formally asked the Charity Commission to register FOLKS as a national charity for children with LKS. The Parent Support Group was then registered as a charity in its own right under the name FOLKS in November 1996.

The Epilepsy Research Foundation was established in 1991 with the aim of funding research into the causes, treatment and prevention of epilepsy. Each project is initially assessed by our Scientific Advisory Committee, that is composed of leading experts in the epilepsy field, to ensure that we are funding research that has real potential to benefit people with epilepsy. These are exciting times in epilepsy research and the Epilepsy Research Foundation is proud to be supporting some of the key researchers in the UK who are pushing forward our knowledge about the causes of epilepsy that will enable us to devise much better strategies for controlling, and perhaps even curing, the disorder. Explores what epilepsy is, how it is diagnosed and surgical and other treatment options.
    http://ucneurology.uchicago.edu/Neurological_Disorders/Pediatric_Neuro_Disorders
Epilepsy is characterized by repeated seizures that may occur as often as several times a day, or as infrequently as once every few months. Normally, millions of tiny electrical charges pass between nerve cells in the brain and throughout the body to control the body's many functions. Epileptic seizures are caused by unusual and strong bursts of electrical energy in the brain. Nearly one-third of people newly diagnosed each year with epilepsy are children. Children are most prone to developing epilepsy in early childhood or at adolescence. However, epilepsy can develop at any age in children or adults. Epilepsy may be triggered by structural abnormality in the brain, brain injury, an infection, or other factors. In the majority of cases, however, the cause cannot be determined. Diagnosis In addition to a comprehensive physical examination and analysis of the child's medical history, the physician may conduct an electroencephalogram (EEG) to record electrical activity in the brain or an MRI scan of the brain to identify the precise location of abnormal electrical activity. The source of epileptic seizures differs within each child's brain. Significant technological advances have greatly improved the diagnostic accuracy for children with epilepsy. University of Chicago scientists and neurologists pioneered multimodal imaging techniques which provide a detailed look at electrical activity inside the brain and pinpoint the source of abnormal activity. By combining several different imaging techniques, multimodal imaging enables physicians to create a "map" of the brain's electrical activity. During surgery, this map is imposed right on the child's brain to guide the neurosurgeon's procedure. This diagnostic accuracy helps to protect the child's delicate brain structures throughout surgery.

    Do Diet Foods Work?

Epilepsy by Susan G Wynn, DVM Seizures, or convulsions, may have a panoply of causes, but "idiopathic epilepsy," by definition, means seizures of unknown origin. If your pet has seizures, it is essential to determine whether a treatable condition exists; this is accomplished with a diagnostic medical work-up. Diagnostic tests such as blood work, X-rays, cerebrospinal fluid taps, electroencephalograms, and CAT scans may help elicit a cause for the seizures. If the diagnosis is idiopathic epilepsy and your pet is having more than one seizure monthly, you may be faced with the decision to use anticonvulsants such as phenobarbital or potassium bromide. As with many medical interventions, there are risks and benefits to anticonvulsant therapy, and anticonvulsants in common use have potentially serious side effects including disorientation, obesity, and liver damage. Another disadvantage is that, once started, it is recommended that treatment never be terminated, because seizures may return in greater numbers than before. But you are probably here trying to find alternatives. Luckily, one or two non-toxic strategies have met with success for many dogs. The key to most of these strategies is diet.

    Vision
A better quality of life for people with epilepsy.
    Mission
To promote independence for people in Alabama with epilepsy.
    History
The Epilepsy Foundation of North and Central Alabama was founded in December of 1971 as the Alabama Council on Epilepsy. The Council relied heavily on the cooperative help of the University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Neurology. The Council was incorporated and became an independent affiliate of the Epilepsy Foundation of America. In 1990 the name was changed to the Epilepsy Foundation of North and Central Alabama as required by the national foundation. Since its beginnings, the primary mission of the Epilepsy Foundation of North and Central Alabama has been to provide education and assistance to those affected by epilepsy. This goal is still present as the Foundation strives to promote independence for people with epilepsy as well as to create understanding in the community. Financial support for the Foundation originated from the Developmental Disabilities Council in 1973. Then, in 1975 the Foundation received a grant from the Alabama Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation Services which still remains an important source of funding. The educational programs provided in schools across the state are funded by the Alabama State Legislature. The Foundation participates in the National Voluntary Health Association. The remainder of our budget is provided through grants, membership fees, fundraising events, and individual and corporate support of community members.

Columbia University Seeks Volunteers for Study of Heredity in Epilepsy The Epilepsy Family Study of Columbia University, led by Dr. Ruth Ottman, Professor of Epidemiology at the Mailman School of Public Health of Columbia University, is seeking volunteers for a study of the role of heredity in epilepsy. What are our research goals and why are they important? Who is eligible? What is asked of volunteers?
What are our research goals and why are they important?
Our goal is to identify genes that play a role in causing epilepsy. Identification of the genes that raise risk for epilepsy is potentially very important for early identification and treatment of susceptible individuals. It could also provide important basic information about the causes of epilepsy. This new information could lead to development of new treatments or strategies for prevention.
