Infection is widespread. Most people have antibodies by the time they reach adulthood. Following primary infection, the virus persists in a latent form in the B lymphocytes of the host. Periodic reactivation of the virus is associated with shedding of virus in saliva. Transmission is by close contact, especially kissing Clinical Syndromes associated with EBV infection Primary Syndromes:-
    1) Infectious Mononucleosis
    2) ‘Chronic EBV infection’
    3) X-linked lymphoproliferative syndrome

Illness results from primary infection with EBV. A clinically apparent illness only develops when primary infection occurs in adolescence or adulthood. Clinical Features The incubation period is 4 to 7 weeks The route of infection is usually close contact. Virus is secreted intermittantly in the saliva of asymptomatic carriers. Two main periods when the virus is transmitted are:

"Tears but these tears were of relief, not from depression, fatigue, confusion or the exhaustion of living with pain, but as my referring doctor said 'an end to a nightmare I had been living, for the past 16 years'. Results from blood tests performed in an American laboratory confirmed that I had been suffering complications from a single celled parasite which was located in my stomach. Apparently, the parasite lives off gut secretions so I wasn't gaining full benefits from the food I was eating. Six months of treatment I began to slowly improve. My referring doctor informed me that it would probably take at least 12-18 months before my body would fully recover. Unfortunately, this recovery period did not seem to apply to my situation. I was informed that the parasites had caused release of harmful toxins into my system, which caused major imbalance affecting both my physical and mental well-being. Depression complicated by incessant emotional highs and low caused me to be up and down like a roller coaster ride. Depression and exhaustion would trigger major mood swings, emotional intolerance, sudden uncontrollable crying, neck pains and rigidity of my spine. I would gain temporary relief with the help of chiropractic and physiotherapy usually requiring some form of treatment every 3-4 days and on many occasions daily treatments were required. This cycle of depression and spinal pain continued for over 12 years. If I didn't perform stretching exercises at least 3 times every day, I would quickly collapse into stiffness, uncontrollable pain and depression.

    December 15, 1997
Web posted at: 11:44 p.m. EST (0444 GMT) From Medical Correspondent Dr. Steve Salvatore (CNN) Doctors hope a new discovery about lupus will help them find a cure for the debilitating disease of the immune system. Although the cause of lupus remains unknown, a new study suggests that there may be a link between it and the Epstein Barr virus, which causes mononucleosis. Researchers found 99 percent of the young lupus patients they studied tested positive for the Epstein Barr virus, compared to 70 percent of those without lupus. VXtreme Video CNN's Dr. Steve Salvatore reports "It may be that lupus patients are extremely susceptible to the virus ... and it may be that you need to have the virus infection before you could catch lupus," said Dr. John Harley of the University of Oklahoma. For Kathleen Lewis , who has been living with lupus for 20 years, the disease poses a new challenge every day. "Living with lupus is like trying to hit a moving target while you're on a roller coaster," she said. "You don't know how you're going to feel minute to minute, day to day." In contrast to healthy people, whose bodies produce antibodies to fight off infections and viruses, people with lupus produce antibodies that attack normal, healthy tissue. Lupus patients get sick often. In severe cases, the disease can be fatal.

Summary description of EBV, CFS and like conditions: All of these chronic conditions are caused by the same basic mechanisms and are resolved by very similar approaches which deal with those causes or at least enough of the aggravating mechanisms that the bodymind can re-establish a much healthier homeodynamic. Which syndrome any individual experiences is a lot more due to genetic susceptibility of that individual than it is to any actual causes. Any one who practices the 3 legs of the "wellness" stool will have none of these conditions within 6 months. See the glossary and the link at

Diluted patient serum is incubated with purified EBV VCA antigens bound to EIA plate wells. If antibodies to EBV VCA are present they bind to the antigen and do not rinse off. Subsequently, when enzyme-labeled anti-human IgG is added to the reaction site, it binds to the immobilized antibodies. After washing and the addition of a chromogenic substrate and stop solution, specimens containing antibodies to EBV VCA produce a color endpoint reaction which is measured and compared to negative and positive controls, and may be measured spectrophotometrically.

The Laboratory Diagnosis of Persistent Epstein Barr Virus Infection
Epstein Barr Virus (EBV), a member of the herpes virus group, is a ubiquitous agent that infects most human beings at some stage of their life. Primary infections with EBV are usually of short duration, self-limiting and without long term effect. If they occur in childhood, they are often symptom less. In adolescence or young adults, they present as mononucleosis that may reactivate in times of stress.
Immunology of Epstein Barr Virus (EBV)
The immune response associated with EBV infection are very complex. Active EBV infection associated with an increase in the number of suppressor cells and often the presence of circulating immune complexes. The useful in the of virus itself has a predilection of lymphoblastoid cells, particularly B lymphocytes where it can lay dormant for many years. The virus elicits a variety of antibody response some of which are useful in the diagnosis of the viral state of the patient. Although as stated most instances of infection with this virus are self-limiting; occasionally some patients have a protracted illness with bouts of fever, sore throats and lymphadenopathy. In addition to this group, Tobi and his colleagues described a group of patients who had a variety of symptoms ranging from malaise and weight loss to headache and depression. The antibodies seen by Tobi in these patient's were as IgM to VCA and antibody to the early antigen. Jones and his collaborators on the other hand, studying a similar group of patients, reported high titer to IgG to VCA and the presence of antibody to the early antigen.
