Dear Sirs I believe, at least according to my doctor I have essential tremor, shaking of head (not aware of it until pointed out to me). Hands, both left and right shake
(slightly) although very noticeable when using a mouse on computer. I suffered nearly 30 years with Trigeminal Neuralgia and took 1600 mgs of Tegretol for
most of those years. The last six years the pain still affected me even though on medication. (Through other forms of natural medicines this now seems to be under control). I wondered if there was a link with the tremor and the neuralgia or if it is a drug side effect? I have not taken the drug since November 1997. I am also being treated for Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma (second occurence) but the tremor started before I was diagnosed in April 1997, although I could

Health Topics A-Z Search 1Up Health Essential tremor Information Essential tremor Causes, Incidence, and Risk Factors Alternative names : Tremor - essential Definition : Essential tremor is a nerve disorder in which tremors (shakes) occur without an identifiable cause when a person is moving or trying to move.
Causes, Incidence, and Risk Factors
All people have some degree of tremor that occurs during movement,. This shaking is called physiologic (occurs normally), and it mainly involves the hands. Stressful circumstances, such as fatigue, anger, fear or using certain substances (such as coffee or cigarettes) may cause transient worsening of physiologic tremor, to the point that it may become visible to the naked eye. Essential tremor is the most common form of abnormal tremor, which resembles an exaggerated physiologic shaking. Essential tremor is worsened by the same factors that enhance physiologic tremor. Although the cause is unknown, new research shows that one part of the brain called cerebellum does not appear to function properly in patients who have essential tremor. The cerebellum is the part of the brain that coordinates muscle movements and therefore, provides accuracy and harmony to voluntary movement. Nevertheless, no evident brain lesions have been identified in patients with this form of tremor. There is evidence that there are several different types of essential tremor (such as young-onset essential tremor or essential tremor with head tremor). These types differ in their response to treatment.

Essential Tremor Dear Reflexology Rex... Can reflexology be of help to et? Patient is also doing accupressure treatments with little change noticed in et. Dear ......Unfortunately, reflexology cannot necessarily assist with the actual problem that your patient is suffering from, but because Essential Tremor is aggravated by emotional stress, reflexology can help on that account. Reflexology can help maintain the general well being of the patient and help keep the patient relaxed, which is something that your patient is in need of most.
It is very important that your patient receive treatments on a regular basis, if possible at least two to three times a week. The more treatments your patient can receive, the more relaxed he/she will be and therefore should feel some sort of relief.
Good luck!

Gene Locus Found for Essential Tremor Disorder Researchers from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke have located a gene locus responsible for the most common human movement disorder, essential tremor (ET). In an article in the November 1997 issue of Movement Disorders , Joseph J. Higgins, M.D., Lana T. Pho, and Linda E. Nee, M.S.W., report how they traced the gene to the short arm of chromosome 2. "This is an important advance for a disorder that affects millions of Americans," says Zach W. Hall, Ph.D., Director of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. "It will lead the way to discovery of the gene, which should help us better understand the basis for this disabling condition." ET is characterized mainly by tremor of the arms, but the head, neck and voice may also be involved. About 4 million Americans have this bothersome and sometimes disabling inherited disorder. ET affects approximately 1 to 6 percent of the adult population over the age of 40. "The participation of an American family that has been disabled by tremor for five generations permitted us to employ a research technique called linkage analysis to locate the vicinity of an ET gene," says Dr. Higgins. "This finding lays the foundation for future research aimed at identifying the cause of ET. And it may eventually further our understanding of why people shake and benefit individuals with tremor through better diagnosis and treatment."

Introduction
Essential tremor (ET) is a common movement disorder in which a high frequency (typically 7 hz) postural tremor occurs in the hands, variably accompanied by a head and/or vocal tremor. The tremor ordinarily is abolished by ingestion of alcohol, and is increased by nervousness and medications that increase adrenalin levels. Essential tremor often runs in families, and is generally not associated with brain lesions.
Differential Diagnosis:
Essential tremor is generally easily distinguished from the common tremor of Parkinsonism, which is slower and present at rest.
Treatment
Beta blockers such as propranolol, benzodiazepines, and mysoline are all commonly used in treatment. Recently it has been reported that ET can be treated with bilateral thalamic stimulation, but as this procedure is associated with significant morbidity, its usefulness seems very limited. References: Pahwa and others. Bilateral thalamic stimulation for the treatment of essential tremor. Neurology 1999:53:1447-1450.

M ovement Disorders are common and can be seen as one isolated symptom or can be part of specific neurological conditions. These include Parkinson's Disease, Essential Tremor, Dystonia, Multiple System Atrophy, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), Huntingdon's Disease, Restless Legs Syndrome, Spasticity, Tourette Syndrome, Tic disorders, Myoclonus, Ataxia, Wilson's Disease and others. For each Movement Disorders a detailed evaluation, patient education, and specific treatment options are available and are offered at Stanford Movement Disorders Clinic. Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) At the SMDC we have a strong interest in DBS and have developed significant expertise in this area in clinical practice and in research. Over 100 procedures have been done at Stanford. Deep Brain Stimulation is a new form of treatment for Movement Disorders, where a neuropacemaker is implanted in one of several sites in the Basal Ganglia. Continuous, high frequency electrical pulses are emitted from the implanted electrode and set up a field of stimulation in the brain, a few millimeters in diameter. A lead (under the skin) connects the electrode to the pacemaker battery, which is placed below the collar bone. The electrode and pacemaker are manufactured by Medtronic Inc (Minnesota), who also make cardiac pacemakers.

Is it Benign Essential Tremor?
This article submitted by Allison on 2/8/97.
Author's Email: shields@net1plus.com
I am experiencing a full body tremor with all movement that began suddenly in November of 96. The tremor feels like anti-lock brakes in a car. I also experience frequent muscle twitches. Until November, I have been healthy except for a history of infrequet Migraine headaches (beginning at age 12) and a rare case of pre-eclampsia two years ago. The body tremor initially presented itself in my arms and has now progressed to my neck, jaw, back, and legs. I have also lost 36 pounds over a year and a half. I was diagnosed with "Benign Essential Tremor" based on my clinical presentation and history. No testing was done to rule in or rule out any other possible cause. What course of action should I take at this point? This diagnosis feels unfounded to me. Next Article

Author's Email:
We are looking for any info on E.T. My husband has been diagnosed recently although he has been aware of the tremor since his late teens. He is 46 . Based on what we have learned he seems to have worse symptoms than some. The tremors have affected his voice, head and hands. At times of anxiety he is unable to do
simple things such as drink from a cup ,pour liquids or write. He also has problems with his speech. The tremor began to worsen about 2 yr.s ago and has progressed to the point that he can no longer do the work that he has done all along (contractor). He has been to a neurologist who spent a total of 15 - 20 min. with him and made the decision that he should go for vocational retraining. He has been tried on several meds none of which helped at all. The first was Verapamil which seemed to make the tremor worse then Mysoline which sedated him then Symmetrel which also sedated. Currently he is taking Tenormin and Ativan which has little affect on the tremor but seems to help him cope mentally. Any ideas on other alternatives? This condition is affecting our lives drastically. Thank You Next Article

Essential Tremor Essential tremor is a common movement disorder, often familial, that results in tremor of the extremities, head, or voice. In the extremities, the tremor is most prominent with movement or the maintenance of outstretched postures. It characteristically progresses in severity over time and may become quite disabling. Many patients achieve excellent control of their tremor with pharmacological treatment. Some patients initially respond to medication treatment, but with time fail to experience adequate control of their symptoms. The tremor may significantly interfere with manual dexterity, handwriting, and eating and drinking due to the inability to manipulate utensils and hold a cup. For patients with significant tremor not sufficiently suppressed with medications, stereotactic surgical treatment often provides substantial relief of symptoms.
