Tennessee Fainting Goats
The origin of the Fainting goat has been
traced back to the 1880's in Marshall County,
Tennessee. A man by the name of Tinsley came to
town bringing along a few goats and a "sacred"
cow. He stayed long enough to marry a local woman,
and to help a farmer with the harvest. He sold his
goats to a man by the name of R. Goode and then
departed the community. He took the cow with him,
but alas for the poor wife, left her behind.
Today's Fainting goats descended from those few goats. The goats were used primarily for meat, although they were also used to protect sheep. With a Fainting goat in the herd if coyotes or dogs threatened the sheep, the sheep could run away while the Fainting goat fell over, providing the predator with an easy meal while the sheep escaped. These goats were close to extinction by the 1980's, but have now been bred back to where they are no longer endangered. The name "Fainting" goat is a bit misleading because they do not actually faint. They have a genetic problem with relaxing

Light-headedness is a vague feeling of dizziness or a feeling like a person is going to faint. Considerations Return to top Fainting (syncope) can be caused by any condition causing a reduction of circulating blood flow to the brain. The cause of fainting should be evaluated by a health care provider.
Fainting or syncope is characterized by sudden pallor loss of consciousness , and occasionally slight twitching or convulsive movements. For a parent, seeing their child faint may be a terrifying experience.
A simple faint (vasovagal faint) is rarely preceded by pain, pressure, constriction in the chest, or shortness of breath . It can be preceded by weakness , giddiness, nausea dizziness , and a sense that the surrounding noise is growing fainter and fainter.

Fainting: What Causes It What causes fainting?
Fainting, which is also called syncope, can be related to many different things. More than one thing may be the cause of fainting. Sometimes a specific cause for fainting can't be found. Fainting can happen when not enough oxygen flows through your blood and into your brain. You lose consciousness, or "pass out," for a very brief time just a few seconds or minutes. A sudden drop in your blood pressure can cause you to faint. Sometimes your heart rate and blood vessels can't react fast enough when your body's need for oxygen changes. This is very common among older people. It can happen when:
    • You stand up fast.
    • You work or play hard, especially if it's very hot.
    • You begin to breathe too fast (called hyperventilating).
    • You get very upset. Being upset can affect the nerves that control your blood pressure.
    • You're taking medicine for high blood pressure.
Coughing, urinating and stretching can also get in the way of the flow of oxygen to the brain and may be a cause of fainting. If you faint once during one of these activities, it's probably not something to worry about. But if it happens more than once, you should tell your doctor about it. If you faint when you turn your head to the side, the bones in your neck may be pinching on one of the blood vessels that leads to your brain. If this happens to you, be sure to tell your doctor about it.

Bush on fainting episode: 'Chew your food'
Bush appeared in front of reporters Monday with a bruise on his left cheek. EAST MOLINE, Illinois (CNN) President Bush scraped and bruised after a fainting spell extolled motherhood on Monday as another symbol of American patriotism, and gave the John Deere workers he addressed a lighthearted lesson to chew on. "If my mother is listening, mother, I should have listened to you: Always chew your pretzels before you swallow," Bush said jokingly. Bush lost consciousness for a brief time in the White House on Sunday evening while eating a pretzel and watching a professional football game on television. He fell from his couch and has a scrape and large bruise on his left cheekbone, plus a bruise on his lower lip, to show for his troubles. His glasses cut the side of his face. fainting is a temporary loss of consciousness and muscle tone. It is caused by not having enough blood flow to the brain.
    http://health.discovery.com/diseasesandcond/encyclopedia/3086.html
fainting By Adam Brochert, MD Fainting is a temporary loss of consciousness and muscle tone. It is caused by not having enough blood flow to the brain. What is going on in the body? When there is not enough blood flow to the brain, passing out protects the brain from damage. People who faint generally lose muscle tone and fall to the ground. When someone is lying on the ground, the blood being pumped out of the heart doesn't have to fight gravity to get to the brain. Those who faint have a relaxed body, which uses less energy. This also makes it easier for the heart to pump blood to the brain. What are the signs and symptoms of the condition? A person who faints usually becomes quite pale and may sweat heavily. The individual may be nauseated. Most people who pass out wake up in less than 2 minutes. There are several things a healthcare provider may want to know after a person has fainted, such as: how long the person was unconscious how quickly the person felt normal again after waking up what position the person was in before fainting whether the person felt dizzy or light-headed before passing out whether the person has fainted before whether there was any strong emotion, pain, or

If your child faints, there are several things your doctor will consider:
    • vasovagal fainting - This is the most frequent cause of fainting in children and is commonly seen in teens who have been sitting or lying down in one position for a while, and then suddenly arise. Their more elastic blood vessels in the legs and lower abdomen pool the blood temporarily and reduce the return flow to the heart. This drops the blood pressure to the brain enough to cause momentary malfunction and the child becomes lightheaded and may pass out. As soon as the child lies down, the blood flow normalises and the spell passes.
    • heart arrhythmia or other heart condition - This is a potentially very serious cause of fainting. Cardiological evaluation is mandatory for any child who
      • has a family history of unexplained sudden deaths
      • has a blood relative with a heart rhythm problem
      • who faints during exercise
      • or has a heart murmur that is not known for certain to be benign
    • seizure disorder - A child who is found unconscious after presumably fainting could have had a seizure.

    10. Fainting Goats
fainting Goats. fainting goats? you ask. This breed has several names themost common are Myotonic, Tennessee fainting, Nervous, and Scare goats.
    http://www-personal.umich.edu/~jimknapp/goats.html
    Fainting Goats.
"Fainting goats?" you ask. "This must be a joke!" "No," I reply, "they are definitely real." Fainting goats are a slightly smaller version of the standard goat, who, believe it or not, thanks to a genetic condition called myotonia congenita, actually seem to faint when they are startled. As strange as this may sound, these little critters have actually served an historical purpose. Shepherds often kept the goats in with their flocks as insurance in case of predator attacks. The theory went something like this- as wolves would come down from the hills to attack a flock of sheep, the goats would become startled and, as per the name of their breed, they would faint. The sheep would make a clean getaway, as the wolves would focus on the stunned goats rather than pursue the fleeing sheep. Not that wonderful if you were one of the goats, sure, but downright dandy if you happened to be a sheep. This breed has several names- the most common are Myotonic, Tennessee Fainting, Nervous, and Scare goats. The names refer specifically to myotonia congenita, a condition in which the muscle cells experience prolonged contraction when the goat is startled. The transitory stiffness associated with these contractions can cause the goat to stop moving, stiffen, and even fall down. This is not a true faint, but a muscular phenomenon unrelated to the nervous system. The actual degree of stiffness may vary widely from goat to goat and is based on a number of factors, including age, species purity, and degree of fright.

08:00 PM Dec. 20, 1996 PT Washington wags couldn't help themselves when new Secretary of Commerce William Daley fainted onstage in an ignominious debut. After all, Daley literally stumbled into the spotlight. "I've heard of falling down on the job, but not falling down before being on the job," jokes one Washington insider with ties to the technology industry. While neither a technology industry insider nor a Washington policy player, Daley had better get used to the jibes. Friends say he's a "capable guy," but policy observers openly wonder: Does Daley have what it takes to manage the Commerce Department, the agency at the epicenter of the government's debate on Internet and technology policy? Commerce controls funding for many science and technology programs, and is a key participant on several Internet panels inside the administration.

Web posted at: 11:47 p.m. EDT (0347 GMT) WASHINGTON (CNN) Attorney General Janet Reno was reported in good condition Sunday at a Washington hospital after fainting during a morning church service, but doctors decided to keep Reno overnight in a coronary care unit as a precaution. Dr. Paul Katz of Georgetown University Medical Center said Reno's vital signs were stable and that her condition was "by no means" life threatening. Katz said Reno was being kept in the coronary care unit "because it allows us to keep an eye on her and have her connected to an electrocardiogram. It's not because she's doing anything other than very well." Reno read work materials and spoke to family members Sunday afternoon. Her spokesman, Bert Brandenburg, said she was disappointed that her hospital room lacked cable television, which prevented her from watching games on the last day of the baseball season.
