FAINTING GOATS "What is a Fainting Goat?" Fainting goats are known by a variety of different names, such as, nervous, stiff-legged, wooden-legged, etc. The "Fainter" is a normal goat in every way except that they have a hereditary muscle condition called "myotonia", which is a combination of recessive genes. Myotonia causes their muscles to lock-up or stiffen when startled or excited. They do not actually faint or lose consciousness. They just get stiff, sometimes lose their balance and simply fall over. Their minds are fully alert the entire time they are "down". It has been determined that the animals exhibit no signs of pain or harm of any kind and this condition does not lessen the goats lifespan. Properly taken care of, a fainting goat can live from 12 to 15 years. Fainters come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. They are very gentle, make excellent pets, are wonderful mothers, and easy kidders. Some produce a thick coat of cashmere during the winter months that can be collected and spun. They make lovable pets as well as productive breeding stock. They are extremely hardy and happy. Some individuals are especially friendly to people and literally adopt their masters and shower them with affection.

Definition
Fainting is a temporary loss of consciousness and muscle tone. It is caused by not having enough blood flow to the brain.
What is going on in the body? When there is not enough blood flow to the brain, passing out protects the brain from damage. People who faint generally lose muscle tone and fall to the ground. When someone is lying on the ground, the blood being pumped out of the heart doesn't have to fight gravity to get to the brain. Those who faint have a relaxed body, which uses less energy. This also makes it easier for the heart to pump blood to the brain. What are the signs and symptoms of the condition? A person who faints usually becomes quite pale and may sweat heavily. The individual may be nauseated. Most people who pass out wake up in less than 2 minutes. There are several things a healthcare provider may want to know after a person has fainted, such as:

Fainting
By Justine Ferrari
September 14, 2002 FAINTING used to be fashionable - nothing like a well-timed swoon to land a woman in the arms of an intended suitor at a time when a handshake was reserved for intimate acquaintances. But nobody seems to faint anymore.
In the days when fainting was considered a feminine charm a tight corset was often the culprit. More common causes today include an irregular heartbeat, emotional distress, heavy sweating or a violent coughing fit. It accounts for about 3 per cent of visits to hospital emergency, according to one study. Fainting is a temporary loss of consciousness and posture. You become pale, you sweat, pass out and fall to the ground. Your pulse weakens and your breathing becomes irregular. After a few minutes, you start to regain consciousness, the colour returns to your face, your muscles firm, your pulse becomes stronger and your breathing more regular. Vasovagal syncope, the fancy term for fainting, occurs when there is an insufficient supply of blood to the brain. It is caused by a neurological reflex that starts in the brain in response to a physical or emotional trigger. The brain sends out a signal that makes blood vessels dilate or widen and causes blood to pool in the legs. The heart rate slows and as a result, the brain does not receive enough oxygenated blood, causing you to faint.

Tennessee Fainting Goat
The goats of this breed have a host of names: Myotonic, Tennessee Fainting, Tennessee Meat, Texas Wooden Leg, Stiff, Nervous, and Scare goats. The names refer to a breed characteristic known as myotonia congenita, a condition in which the muscle cells experience prolonged contraction when the goat is startled. The transitory stiffness associated with these contractions can cause the goat to fall down. This is not a true faint, but a muscular phenomenon unrelated to the nervous system. The degree of stiffness varies from goat to goat, with some showing a consistently stiff response and others exhibiting stiffness only rarely. The breed's history can be traced back to the 1880s. An itinerant farm laborer named John Tinsley came to central Tennessee, reputedly from Nova Scotia. Tinsley had with him four unusual, stiff goats. Goats of this type gradually became known across the region. They were less apt to climb fences and escape from pastures than other goats, and their muscular conformation and high reproductive rate were also valued. Farmers began to appreciate them, and the numbers of "stiff," "nervous," or "fainting" goats increased. During the 1950s, some Tennessee Fainting goats were taken to the hill country of central Texas. They were further selected for meat qualities, including larger size, and came to be known as "Wooden Leg" goats.

F ainting occurs when the blood supply to your brain is momentarily inadequate, causing you to lose consciousness. Loss of consciousness is usually brief. Fainting can have no medical significance, or fainting can be a symptom of a serious disorder. Therefore, treat loss of consciousness as a medical emergency until the symptoms are relieved and the cause is known. I f you feel faint: Lie down or sit down; if you feel dizzy or light-headed while sitting, lie down. Discuss recurrent fainting spells with your health care provider. I f someone else faints and slumps to the floor:
  • Position the person on his or her back. Watch the airway carefully. People who lose consciousness frequently vomit. Position your ear over the person's mouth to listen for breathing sounds. Check for a pulse. If breathing and heartbeat have stopped, the problem is more serious than a fainting spell. Initiate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Get emergency medical care.

    Definition
Fainting is loss of consciousness caused by a temporary lack of oxygen to the brain. Known by the medical term "syncope," fainting may be preceded by dizziness , nausea, or a feeling of extreme weakness.
    Description
When a person faints, the loss of consciousness is brief. The person will wake up as soon as normal blood flow is restored to the brain. Blood flow is usually restored by lying flat for a short time. This position puts the head on the same level as the heart so that blood flows more easily to the brain. A fainting episode may be completely harmless and of no significance, but it can be a symptom of a serious underlying disorder. No matter how trivial it seems, a fainting episode should be treated as a medical emergency until the cause is determined.
Extreme pain , fear, or stress may bring on fainting. This type of fainting is caused by overstimulation of the vagus nerve, a nerve connected to the brain that helps control breathing and circulation. In addition, a person who stands still or erect for too long may faint. This type of fainting occurs because blood pools in the leg veins, reducing the amount that is available for the heart to pump to the brain. This type of fainting is quite common in older people or those taking drugs to treat high blood pressure.

Welcome to Bgoat's Tennessee Fainting Goat Page! Esther faints at the price of feed! The world of the Tennessee Fainting Goat is a world of legends born in American folklore. Where did these astounding creatures come from? Do they really faint? These are just a few of the questions we will answer on our page... The origins of the Fainting Goat can best be traced to the hills of Tennessee and the County of Marshall. It was here that a drifter named Tinsley arrived in about the year 1880. We can't really say who Tinsley was, but of course we can speculate! There can be little doubt that the hills of Tennessee were fertile hunting grounds for the infamous Medicine Men of the day. Perhaps Tinsley belonged to this group? Who knows! But imagine his sales pitch: "Look here folks, these here goats got a case of the palsy real bad." Then he might have paraded out one of the fainting goats for the townspeople to see. Naturally they would have been astonished at the stiffness the animal exhibited, but when given his wondrous tonic, the goat seemed to heal right in front of everyone! The townspeople, unaware that the stiffness in these goats last only a few seconds, may have quite naturally believed they had just witnessed a miracle of science! Which of course, they would purchase. Perhaps he was a simple travelling salesman. Yet if he was, what was he selling? He did not sell his goats until he had been in the area of Marshall county for a while. In fact, he married and seemed to have settled down. He took the time to work a farm, but he soon tired of the life of a farmer. So Tinsley sold his goats to a man named Mayberry and left his wife and his farm. However, he did take his "sacred cow" with him. Yes, he also traveled with a cow named Zebu that was considered sacred. We don't know if the cow possessed the ability to faint. We never hear of Tinsley or Zebu again.

Mr. Billington's Fainting Goats Fainting Goats Do they really faint? Well not really but their muscles do become stiff and they sometimes fall over. The condition is called Myotonia. Some people refer to these goats as Nervous goats, Wooden leg, Scare goats...whatever they are called they are special and a joy to own. Many people raise Myotonic goats as meat goats. I milk my goats and raise most of the kids on CAE preventive. We find the milk to have an excellent flavor. They produce around a quart at each milking. I also enjoy making soap from their milk. I think of this breed as being the perfect small farm breed producing both milk and meat. They are easier to handle than some of the other breeds I have raised. I hope you enjoy the pictures of goats we own now or have owned in the past. Please follow links below for more information on this breed.
