Cystocele (Fallen Bladder) What is a cystocele?
Cystocele is the name for a hernia-like disorder in women that occurs when the wall between the bladder and the vagina weakens, causing the bladder to drop or sag into the vagina. What are the results of a cystocele?
In addition to discomfort, the resulting dropped bladder can cause two kinds of problems to occur:
  • urine leakage incomplete emptying of the bladder
The dropped bladder stretches the opening into the urethra, and urine may leak when a woman does any action that causes pressure on the bladder, such as coughing. What are the grades of cystoceles? grade 1 mild - when the bladder droops only a short way into the vagina grade 2 more severe - when the bladder has sunk into the vagina far enough to reach the opening of the vagina grade 3 most advanced - when the bladder bulges out through the opening of the vagina What causes a cystocele?
A cystocele may result from:
  • heavy lifting straining muscles during childbirth repeated straining during bowel movements menopause
The hormone estrogen helps keep the muscles around the vagina strong, but with menopause, the body stops making estrogen and the muscles around the vagina and bladder may become weakened.

The following information is from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. Bladder Control
There are many different types of urologic diseases. One very common example is Bladder Control in women. Women of all ages have bladder control problems. Some younger women find they can't hold their urine after having a baby. Others have problems when they stop having periods. Many women over the age of 75 also have bladder control problems. You may feel ashamed about bladder control problems. Remember that it's a medical problem and it's not your fault. Millions of women have the same problem. Cystcele
Another urologic disease involving the bladder is Cystcele, or fallen bladder. A cystocele (SIS-tuh-seal) occurs when the wall between a woman's bladder and her vagina weakens and lets the bladder droop into the vagina. This condition may cause discomfort and problems with emptying the bladder. In some women, a fallen bladder stretches the opening into the urethra, causing urine leakage when the woman coughs, sneezes, laughs, or does any action that puts pressure on the bladder. So a bladder that has dropped from its normal position may cause two kinds of problemsunwanted urine leakage and incomplete emptying of the bladder.

    Basic Facts
    • Incontinence is any involuntary loss of urine, which often is associated with an underlying medical condition.
    • One-third of people over the age of sixty have some loss of urinary control.
    • Most incontinence is caused by genetics and lifestyle factors, such as obesity, smoking, and childbirth.
    The female genitourinary tract.
Incontinence—the involuntary release of urine—is a medical condition that is well-known but rarely discussed. Because it can be socially embarrassing and isn’t life-threatening, many people with incontinence suffer in silence by not talking about the condition with their physicians. Their silence is unfortunate because there are treatments that can help. Despite the secretiveness surrounding it, incontinence is anything but rare. Experts estimate that 35 to 50 million Americans, including children, have periods of occasional or frequent involuntary urine loss. Perhaps due to the effects of childbirth on the pelvic muscles, women experience incontinence two times more often than men. The male genitourinary tract.

    http://www.bladder-disorders.com/html/atonic_bladder.php3
Atonic Bladder, or Flaccid Bladder, Symptoms Causes and Treatments Atonic bladder, or flaccid bladder, occurs when the bladder becomes dilated and fails to empty properly. Atonic bladder differs in this regard from most other bladder problems, where the bladder tends to be overactive. The dilated bladder can be stretched by excess urine buildup, leading to overflow leakage and damage to the bladder walls. Other bladder problems such as urinary tract infections can occur because of urine pooling and subsequent bacterial growth in the flaccid bladder.
Causes of Atonic Bladder: Nerve Damage and Obstruction
Flaccid bladder can often be traced to neurogenic problems: the bladder nerves fail to send appropriate messages to the brain. Multiple sclerosis and spinal cord injuries can both lead to a dilated bladder. Diabetes is also associated with atonic bladders.
Obstruction of the urinary canal may cause flaccid bladder. Bladder stones are the typical causes of obstruction, but a man with an enlarged prostate can develop atonic bladder if the prostrate creates an obstruction of the urinary system.
    Management and Treatment
Management of atonic bladders centers around the need to empty the bladder before overflow leakage or stretching occurs. Catheterization on a regular basis is often used. Patients learn to self-catheterize, and may have to wake up at night to use the catheter.

Medical Encyclopedia Encyclopedia Disease S -> Stress incontinence Stress incontinence Alternate Names: Loss of pelvic support; Urinary incontinence; Fallen bladder Causes and Risks: NORMAL URINATION: The ability to hold urine and maintain continence is dependent on normal function of the lower urinary tract, the kidneys, and the nervous system. Additionally, the person must possess the physical and psychological ability to recognize and appropriately respond to the urge to urinate. The process of urination involves two phases: 1) the filling and storage phase, and 2) the emptying phase. Normally during the filling and storage phase, the bladder begins to fill with urine from the kidneys. The bladder stretches to accommodate the increasing amounts of urine. The first sensation of the need to urinate occurs when approximately 200 ml of urine is stored. The healthy nervous system will respond to this stretching sensation by alerting you to the need to urinate while also allowing the bladder to continue to fill. The average person can hold approximately 350 to 550 ml of urine. The ability to fill and store urine properly requires a functional sphincter muscle controlling output of urine from bladder and a stable bladder wall muscle. The bladder wall muscle is a detrusor muscle. A detrusor muscle is one that has the action of expelling a substance, in the case of the bladder wall muscle the substance is, urine.
