Fibrocystic Breasts
Lumps - Bumps - Pain
by Tracee Cornforth Thirty-three percent of all women between the ages of 30 and 50, and 50 percent of women of all ages, may at some point, be told by their physician that they have fibrocystic breast disease or other benign breast conditions. Other terms women may hear include benign breast disease, chronic mastitis (inflammation), and mammary dysplasia. What is Fibrocystic Breast Disease? Controversy exists about the name - fibrocystic breast disease. Some argue that fibrocystic breast disease is not a disease, but a common and harmless condition experienced by women as they encounter hormonal changes during their menstrual cycles Others argue that fibrocystic breast changes are a precursor for future breast cancer . Current research suggests that women with fibrocystic breast disease or other benign breast conditions are more likely to develop breast cancer later only if a breast biopsy shows "atypia" or abnormal breast cells. Most women with fibrocystic breasts will not show atypia when a breast biopsy is performed. Fibrocystic breast disease is common and usually benign condition. Symptoms include swollen, tender breasts, and/or one or more lumps. Frequently, symptoms worsen just before a woman's menstrual cycle, subsiding near the end. For the majority of women these symptoms are a temporary discomfort, however some women experience severe pain.

Fibrocystic Breasts: A Non-Disease
Fibrocystic Breasts
Fibrocystic changes are the most common cause of breast lumps in women ages 30 to 50. Although fibrocystic changes may also be referred to as fibrocystic disease, this is not a disease, but a condition. It can be known as cystic disease, chronic cystic mastitis or mammary dysplasia. This condition is not cancerous. At least 60% of the women in their reproductive years have "lumpy" breasts as a result of these non-cancerous conditions. This is a very concise and informative page about fibrocystic breasts.
Diagnosing Fibrocystic Changes
Usually, fibrocystic changes can be diagnosed by physical examination or mammography, an x-ray of the breast. Fibrocystic changes also may be found with a biopsy. Fortunately, only about 5% of fibrocystic conditions have the type of changes that would be considered a risk factor of developing breast cancer.
Causes For Fibrocystic Changes
The cause of fibrocystic changes is related to the way breast tissue responds to monthly changes in the levels of estrogen and progesterone, female hormones produced by the ovaries during a woman's reproductive years. Each month during one's menstrual cycle, the breast tissue alternately swells and returns to normal. Hormonal stimulation of the breast tissue causes the milk glands and ducts to enlarge, and the breasts to retain water. The breasts frequently feel swollen, painful, tender, and lumpy at this time. After menstruation, swelling in the breast usually decreases, and the breasts feel less tender and lumpy. That's why the best time to examine the breast is 7-10 days after the start of the menstrual period, when the breast tissue is at its most normal state.

What is Fibrocystic Disease of the Breasts?
Fibrocystic breast disease is a noncancerous condition constant or intermittent causing pain. Fibrocystic disease of the breasts primarily occurs in women in the childbearing years. It is most common between 30 and 50 years of age. Some researchers estimate that up to 70 percent of women in their twenties and up to 60 percent in their thirties have some type of fibrocystic condition. It occurs much less frequently in menopausal women and is more likely in women who are not receiving hormone replacement therapy. It is the most frequent cause of lumps in the breast in women of all ages. Often described in popular language as "lumpy breasts," this condition isn't really a disease but a condition that occurs because of extreme fluctuations in your hormones. If you have this condition, you're not alone. More than half of premenopausal women will experience this condition at one time or another. If you have notice one or more lumps of different sizes. Breast lumps ranging from microscopic cysts to lumps the size of golf ball sized. They often create a lumpy or pebbly feeling. They often cause pain or tenderness in the week to two weeks before the onset of menstruation and frequently disappear immediately after the onset of menstruation. Some women may find that their lumps do not disappear and are ultimately present all the time.

Fibrocystic Breasts Format for Printing Main Menu: What Are Fibrocystic Breasts? Fibrocystic breast condition is a common, non-cancerous condition that affects more than 50% of women at some point in their lives. The most common signs of fibrocystic breasts include lumpiness, tenderness, cysts (packets of fluid), areas of thickening, fibrosis (scar-like connective tissue), and breast pain . Having fibrocystic breasts, in and of itself, is not a risk factor for breast cancer. However, fibrocystic breast condition can sometimes make it more difficult to detect a hidden breast cancer with standard examination and imaging techniques. Fibrocystic breast condition is most common among women between the ages of 30 and 50, although women younger than 30 may also have fibrocystic breasts. Because the condition is related to the menstrual cycle, the symptoms will usually cease after menopause unless a woman is taking hormone replacement therapy . In some cases, fibrocystic breast symptoms may continue past menopause.

Free health information service:
What are Fibrocystic Breasts? QUESTION: After much delay, and unnecessary worry, I consulted my doctor who made a diagnosis of "fibrocystic" breasts. Can you offer me some information about my condition? ANSWER: Fibrocystic breasts, although they may cause you concern or discomfort, are usually considered to be a benign condition that does not affect your risk for breast cancer. So you should follow the same guidelines to check for cancer warning signs that are recommended for all women, regardless of whether they have fibrocystic breasts. Regular breast self-examination is very important. Your doctor may recommend a breast screening, including a mammogram, physical exam, and instruction on how and how often to perform a self-examination. Some patients with fibrocystic breasts find that the condition disappears by itself, particularly if you avoid caffeine (all though this is a subject of some controversy) and wear a support bra. Your doctor may also prescribe a diuretic or, if your condition is relatively severe, the medication danazol. If your mother, an aunt, or a sister have had breast cancer, or if you have had a mastectomy or a biopsy that showed a potential for concern, you may be advised to have an annual mammogram. If no problems appear after two years, you may only need this test every two to three years.

What are Fibro Cystic Breasts?
M any women suffer from a condition called fibrocystic breasts that causes overly sore and sometimes lumpy breasts that are very painful. Hormone levels changing during a woman’s monthly cycle will also affect a woman’s breasts. Giving another person or child a hug becomes more difficult as the pain increases and intimacy can become difficult. This condition is known as fibrocystic breasts. It is not a disease or cancer and cysts are not harmful to your body but the pain can sometimes be overwhelming. It is important that women have their yearly mammogram and know that is not as painful as it has been rumored. Obviously going to a qualified and recommended specialist in the field is very important. During this process you can talk to your health practitioner about the changes in your breasts and seek their advice. They will ask you if you have lumps that appear during your period and then disappear later. These are cysts that you have nothing to worry about and yet they can be extremely painful and affect you emotionally as well as physically. Many doctors have told their patients they will have to live with this until they go through menopause and for many women this is not acceptable. What can you do if you are diagnosed with fibrocystic breasts?

If you want to learn how to make your own remedies, and skin care products... or if you like to know how to treat most common diseases, without using harsh drugs, then you are in the right place. Do you want to save money and control medical costs? Are you aware of the dangers of modern drugs? Then, Let me take you on the inside... Fibrocystic breast is a condition that develops when fluid is not being evacuated fast enough from the breast causing cysts to form in them. These lumps move around the breast, grow and shrink, but they are benign. Normally the fluids in the breast are transported out by the lymphatic system. But if there is too much fluid some may get deposited in different areas of the breast, tissue grows around them creating these lumps. Like we said before these cysts are harmless, but they should be monitored, and a woman should check frequently her breasts in order to find and control the cysts. Frequent mammograms are recommended too. Discomfort, tenderness, and noticeable growth are normal specially around menstrual periods when estrogen levels change, it may be that the cysts disappear after the monthly period. However if the lump is hard, does not move freely and does not go away, check with a doctor immediately.

About Breasts Benign Breast Conditions Fibrocystic Breasts Breast Cancer Mammograms Fibrocystic Breasts Fibrocystic breast condition is among the most common benign (non-cancerous) breast condition, affecting over 50% of women at some time in their lives. This condition is most often seen in women between the ages of 30 and 50. The condition is related to a woman's menstrual cycle and therefore often disappears once a woman has reached menopause. Fibrocystic breasts are the most common cause of benign breast lumps in women. Common signs of fibrocystic breast condition include:
  • tender breasts lumpy breasts cysts (packets of fluid) areas of thickening fibrosis (scar like connective tissue) painful breasts
Fibrocystic breast condition does not leave a woman more at risk for developing breast cancer. Having fibrocystic breasts can, however, make it more difficult to find a breast lump, both in terms of breast examinations and breast imaging techniques.
