What to Do for Colds and Flu
The Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, is part of the U. S. government. FDA makes sure medicines for illnesses like colds and flu work and are safe. Is It a Cold or the Flu? For Your Safety, Know the Difference A cold and the flu (also called influenza) are alike in many ways. But the flu can sometimes lead to more serious problems, like the lung disease pneumonia. A stuffy nose, sore throat, and sneezing are usually signs of a cold. Tiredness, fever, headache, and major aches and pains probably mean you have the flu. Coughing can be a sign of either a cold or the flu. But a bad cough usually points to the flu. Know When to Call Your Doctor You usually do not have to call your doctor right away if you have signs of a cold or flu. But you should call your doctor in these situations:
  • Your symptoms get worse.

Colds and Flu: Time Only Sure Cure
by Tamar Nordenberg It's not chicken soup. Believe it or not, a much more unorthodox therapy of warm-and-cold showers has recently been proposedthough not provenfor the prevention of the common cold. Shower therapy joins an ever-growing spectrum of suggested preventers and treatments for the common coldamong them, hand washing, vitamin C, interferon, seclusion, and various over-the-counter cough and cold medications. "An efficient, practical and inexpensive prophylaxis [preventive measure] against one of the most frequent (and 'expensive') diseases has been identified at last," claims water therapy researcher Edzard Ernst, M.D., in the April 1990 issue of Physiotherapy. Though some may doubt his shower theory, Ernst is right about one thingthe common cold is a frequent and expensive disease, striking some people as many as 12 times a year and leading to some 15 million days lost from work annually in the United States. Influenza, or flu, likewise, is a frequent and expensive disease, reaching epidemic levels in the United States each year. Identify the Enemy Flu is like the cold in many waysmost basically, they're both respiratory infections caused by viruses. If a cold is misdiagnosed as flu, there's no problem. At worst, a cold can occasionally lead to secondary bacterial infections of the middle ear or sinuses, which can be treated with antibiotics. But if the flu is misdiagnosed as a bad cold, potentially life-threatening flu complications like pneumonia may be overlooked.

Internet IPOs Weather Early Flu Season
09:10 AM Nov. 17, 1997 PT Chill October winds from Asia and a stock market tumble of nearly 10 percent have brought the flu season for new technology stock offerings in recent weeks - that aching, coughing, stuffy-nosed feeling that often follows big market downturns. The first two weeks of November have seen a rise in the number of initial public offerings that debut below their expected price, a measurable sign of market weakness that is often the first symptom of a decline in demand for new offerings.

SportsLine USA , the heavily trafficked, CBS-backed Internet sports news site, sputtered when its IPO debuted last Thursday at US$8, a dollar below the expected range of $9 to $11 that bankers had set, raising warning flags on Wall Street. "In a stronger market, we could have seen a 30 to 40 percent pop on the first day," IPO analyst Tom Taulli said of SportsLine's tepid performance vs. similarly high-profile teams in the Internet league like

15. Scratching or clawing in the house
Some cats may tear chair arms with their claws, scratch patches of wallpaper off the wall or shred stair carpets. Most cats do not cause this type of damage, so why do others feel the need to behave like this in our homes? Scratching has several functions, one of the most important being keeping a cat's hunting weapons sharp. Scratching also leaves scent marks in a territory - secretions of watery sweat from between the cat's pads leave a scent message on top of the physical marks. Cats usually scratch outside, choosing trees or posts - wood is just the right texture to allow claws to dig in and be drawn down, pulling off the old claw sheath to reveal the sharp point of the new one. If you look at a regular scratching place you will find these pieces of sheath embedded in the surface. Why do cats scratch inside our homes as well as outdoors ? There could be several reasons. Finding why the cat is scratching will help you to decide on a solution. Exercising the claws and sharpening the points Indoor cats with no access to outside will still need to perform this natural behaviour. If nothing suitable is provided, they will find something in the house that has an appropriate surface.

Flu Shots
The Issue
Influenza (or flu) is a common illness affecting millions of Canadians each year. A flu vaccine administered every year can help prevent the infection or reduce the severity of the illness.
Background
There are three types of influenza: A, B and C. Influenza C is rare. Influenza A and B are the most common types, with influenza A causing the most severe illness. Various strains of influenza virus circulate throughout the world, causing local outbreaks. Although flu viruses exist around the globe year-round, in Canada the flu season usually runs from November to April. The virus also has the capability of changing from year to year. each fall. After vaccination your immune system will produce antibodies against the virus strains in the vaccine. When you are exposed to the flu virus, the antibodies circulating in your body will help to either eliminate the virus or destroy virus infected cells. This will prevent the infection or reduce the severity of the flu.
Health Effects of Influenza
Most people who get the flu recover completely within a week or ten days after the first symptoms occur. However, those at greater risk of more severe and longer lasting complications such as pneumonia include very young children, people over 65 and people who already have medical conditions such as:

Should you take zinc for colds?
December 16, 1997
Web posted at: 12:16 a.m. EST (0516 GMT) Mayo Health Oasis ) More and more people are turning to zinc when they feel a cold coming on, but medical experts caution that it is still not clear how well zinc works on colds and how safe it is. Zinc first gained prominence as a cold remedy with publication of a 1996 Cleveland Clinic study. Study participants who started taking zinc lozenges within 24 hours of the onset of symptoms were free of cold symptoms on average by about 4 1/2 days. Those who took a placebo had symptoms for 7 1/2 days. Consumers have since voted with their wallets. Zinc lozenges were briefly unavailable due to high demand and several new brands recently have hit the market. Popularity doesn't equal effectiveness, however. Two preventive medicine specialists at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, agree that zinc shows promise as a cold remedy but caution that it's still unclear just how well zinc works and how safe it is. Philip T. Hagen, M.D., notes that "there is limited evidence for how to use zinc and even less on how it works, so it makes sense to be cautious in using it. At this point, I would recommend following exactly what was done in the Cleveland Clinic study." Donald D. Hensrud, M.D., says the Cleveland Clinic study was well-designed and well-conducted: "It built upon previous studies. The results were quite believable."
