Gonorrhea (GC) Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. An estimated 650,000 new cases of gonorrhea occur in the United States each year. Like chlamydia, gonorrhea is a leading cause of infertility complicated by the fact that it often does not cause any symptoms (in either women or men). When diagnosed, the disease can be easily cured with antibiotics. Is testing for gonorrhea appropriate for me?

Is testing for gonorrhea appropriate for me? top of page In women, the most common site for the initial infection is the cervix. If untreated, the bacterium can spread to the uterus and fallopian tubes leading to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). PID can lead to infertility, ectopic pregnancy and chronic pelvic pain. Pregnant women with a gonorrhea infection are at greater risk for premature delivery. If exposed during delivery, the baby can develop an infection that may affect the eyes, rectum or genital tract. Today routine preventive treatment of eye drops for newborns can prevent gonococcal eye infections.

Gonorrhea/Clap
Gonorrhea also known as the clap, is a sexually transmitted bacterial disease, which differs in males and females. Symptoms The symptoms in males include a yellowish discharge from the penis, which causes painful, frequent urination. Symptoms can develop from two to thirty days after infection. A few percent of infected men have no symptoms. The infection may move into the prostate, seminal vesicles, and epididymis, causing pain and fever. Untreated, gonorrhea can lead to sterility.
Less than half the women with gonorrhea show any symptoms, or symptoms so mild they just ignore. Early symptoms include a discharge from the vagina, some discomfort in the lower abdomen, irritation of the genitals, pain or burning during urination and some abnormal bleeding. Women, who leave these symptoms untreated, develop severe complications. The infection will usually spread to the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries, causing Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID). Gonorrhea is the most common cause of female infertility.
Some early symptoms of this infection are lower abdomen pain, fever, nausea, and pain during intercourse.

Gonorrhea What is Gonorrhea? Gonorrhea is caused by bacteria called Neisseria Gonorrheae. How is Gonorrhea transmitted? The bacteria can be transmitted through sexual activity, such as intercourse, oral and anal sex. What are the complications of Gonorrhea? These Neisseria Gonorrheae bacteria lead to infections of the cervix, vagina, and urethra. The infection can spread deeper in the reproductive tract. People who practice anal sex can get inflammation of the anus and rectum. People who practice oral sex can get a throat infection. In men, Gonorrhea can cause prostate inflammation and inflammation of the testes. Women can get Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID). What happens if Gonorrhea is left untreated? If Gonorrhea is left untreated, the bacteria may travel to joints causing Gonococcal Arthritis. It may also spread into the blood stream causing blood infection. If a woman with Gonorrhea gets pregnant and does not get the Gonorrhea treated, bacteria may spread to the eyes of their babies during childbirth, causing a severe eye infection. What are the symptoms of Gonorrhea?

Illnesses/Diseases Gonorrhea Definition This condition is a sexually transmitted disease characterized by inflammation of the urethra, difficulty in urination (in males), and inflammation of the cervix (in females). Cause Caused by the Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacterium, this illness is confined largely to sexually active adults between the ages of 20 and 30 but can affect anyone of any age. Many people carry the gonorrhoeae bacterium without any signs of illness; in one study, 2 percent of all women studied at random were asymptomatic carriers. Though sexual intercourse is the predominant means of transmission, gonorrhea bacteria may spread through casual contact; the bacteria can survive for up to 4 hours on dry, inorganic surfaces. If a pregnant woman is infected, the disease may be passed to her baby during delivery and cause blindness unless antibiotic drops are applied to the infant's eyes. Diagnosis Gonorrhea manifests itself 2 to 6 days after the bacteria invade the urethra. Among men, the main symptoms include burning upon urination and discharge from the penis of a puslike purulent, yellowish liquid.

Gonorrhea is one of the most well known STDs. Commonly referred to as 'the clap', gonorrhea is thought to infect about 1.3 million people in the USA every year. About half of those cases are never reported. The disease is caused by the bacteria neisseria gonorrhea which causes inflammation of the glands. The bacteria grows and multiples in the warm moist areas of the body. It primarily affects the urethra in men and the cervix in women. Gonorrhea of the rectum is also possible for those who practice anal sex. It is an STD that is both treatable and preventable. The disease almost always spreads by sexual contact. Women are frequently asymptomatic carriers of the organism for weeks or months and often are identified when sexual contacts are traced. Asymptomatic infection is also common in the oropharynx and rectum in homosexual men and is occasionally found in the urethra in heterosexual men. Gonorrhea occurring in the vagina or rectum of prepubertal children is usually transmitted from adults through sexual abuse or, rarely, by fomites.

GONORRHEA What is gonorrhea?
Gonorrhea is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) that may also be referred to as the “clap” or “the drip”. What causes gonorrhea?
Gonorrhea is caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae, a bacterium that can grow and multiply easily in mucous membranes of the body – such as the eye, rectum/anus, mouth, throat, vagina, and penile opening. Gonorrhea bacteria can grow in the warm, moist areas of the reproductive tract, including the cervix (opening to the womb), uterus (womb), and fallopian tubes (egg canals) in women, and in the urethra (urine canal) in women and men. How do people get gonorrhea?
Gonorrhea is spread through sexual contact (vaginal, oral, or anal). This includes penis-to- vagina, penis-to-mouth, penis-to-anus, mouth-to-vagina, and mouth-to-anus contact. Ejaculation does not have to occur for gonorrhea to be transmitted or acquired. Gonorrhea can also be spread from mother to child during birth. Gonorrhea infection can spread to other unlikely parts of the body. For example, a person can get an eye infection after touching infected genitals and then the eyes. Individuals who have had gonorrhea and received treatment may get infected again if they have sexual contact with persons infected with gonorrhea. Who is at risk for gonorrhea?

Gonococcal infections: For 16 calendar years, 1980 through 1995, Oregon gonorrhea morbidity decreased compared to the previous year, 11,162 cases in 1980 to 854 cases in 1995. This trend was interrupted with the 886 gonorrhea cases reported in 1996, continued downward in 1997 with 773 cases, increased again in 1998, and continued to increase through 2001 with 1039 cases reported. The 106 (10%) case increase of gonococcal infections in 2001 compared to 2000 is associated with additional cases among white males followed by an increase among black males. The greatest increase was observed in the 30-34 age group. Gonorrhea infections among men who have sex with men (MSM) decreased in 2001 compared to the previous year. The 135 cases in 2001 compared to 178 cases in 2000 reflects a 24% decrease. Antibiotic resistant gonorrhea has been documented in Oregon since 1977. Data from local labs and the Gonococcal Isolate Surveillance Project (GISP) indicate significant resistance only to the penicillins and tetracyclines, neither of which are currently used in Oregon as primary therapy for gonococcal infections. Recent reports have indicated there may be an emerging problem with resistance to the quinolones. We have identified two high-level and a few intermediate level quinolone resistant isolates through GISP in the past four years. However, this issue does not appear as a concern in Oregon. We intend to monitor GISP data and field reports regarding this issue.

Definition
Gonorrhea is a highly contagious sexually transmitted disease that is caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae . The mucous membranes of the genital region may become inflamed without the development of any other symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they are different in men and women. In men, gonorrhea usually begins as an infection of the vessel that carries urine and sperm (urethra). In women, it will most likely infect the narrow part of the uterus (cervix). If untreated, gonorrhea can result in serious medical complications.
Description
Gonorrhea is commonly referred to as "the clap." The incidence of gonorrhea has steadily declined since the 1980s, largely due to increased public awareness campaigns and the risk of contracting other sexually transmitted diseases , such as AIDS . Still, current estimates range from 400,000 to as many as one million projected cases of gonorrhea in the United States each year. These estimates vary due to the private nature of the disease and the consequent underreporting that occurs. The majority of reported cases of gonorrhea come from public health clinics. The disease affects people of all ages, races, and socioeconomic levels, but some individuals are more at-risk than others. Adolescents and young adults are the highest risk group, with more than 80% of the reported cases each year occurring in the 15-29 age group. Those individuals with multiple sexual partners and who use no barrier
