Seasonality of gout?
Clinical bottom line
There is some evidence from different parts of the world that diagnosis of gout occurs more frequently in the Spring in the northern hemisphere.

Studies
These studies took place in Philadelphia, USA, and Ferrara, Italy, both in the early-to-mid 1990s. In each case the number of diagnoses of gout (clinical, history, laboratory, examination) were examined for the seasons of the year. The numbers were 359 patients in Philadelphia and 210 in Ferrara.
Results
In both cases there was a significant preponderance of diagnosis in the Spring (March, April, May).
Figure 1: Seasonality of gout diagnosis in Italy and the USA
Comment
There are some other references to the seasonality of gout diagnosis. The reason for it is unknown, though there are some reports about circannual changes in serum uric acid. The interesting question is what is the peak month for diagnosis in the southern hemisphere?

Arthritis and Gout New drugs are very effective in rheumatoid arthritis New drugs are very effective in rheumatoid arthritis Susan Aldridge, PhD Drugs that block an inflammatory molecule may offer new hope to those with rheumatoid arthritis.
There are many different forms of arthritis - a painful disease of the joints. Most sufferers, however, are diagnosed with either osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. The latter is more common among women than men and may strike at a very young age. As well as painful joints, the patient may experience fever, fatigue and loss of appetite. Doctors at the University of Michigan have been finding good results in rheumatoid arthritis from a new class of drug called tumor necrosis factor (THF) inhibitors. TNF is a molecule of the immune system which is activated inappropriately in rheumatoid arthritis - a disease which has a strong autoimmune component. Blocking TNF goes some way toward addressing the problem. The new drugs are expensive, but they are probably worth the investment for the benefits they bring to the patient. Source University of Michigan 7th March 2003 Osteoarthritis is a condition that affects the bones and joints in the body. It occurs when the cartilage that covers and protects the ends of bones wears down.

I have gout. Can you furnish me with a diet low in purines. I cannot take the medication due to the blood thinner I am taking for a blood problem.
Gout is painful swelling in the feet. Medication is the treatment of choice for gout. I would suggest you get in touch with your doctor because there are some newer gout medications on the market that may not interfere with your other medications. The uric acid level in the blood goes up in persons with gout. Alcohol is not recommended for persons with an elevated uric acid because it causes your body to lose water and may increase the uric acid levels in the blood. Also, foods high in purines break down in the body to uric acid. However, food sources of purines account for only about 50 percent of the uric acid produced within the body. The remaining uric acid breaks down from other sources within the body. We used to prescribe a low purine diet, but the diet is not as frequently used. A low purine diet omits organ meats like liver, kidney, sweetbreads, brains, meat gravies and extracts, sardines, anchovies, herring, mackerel, scallops and most wild game. The following foods are allowed once per day: meat; fish; poultry; dried beans and peas; asparagus; mushrooms; cauliflower; spinach.
I've been having problems with gout lately. Can you give me some help with my diet.

    • Gout affects 2.1 million Americans. Men aged 40 to 50 are most commonly affected.
What is Gout? Known as "the disease of kings and the king of diseases," gout has been studied by physicians and has caused suffering in many people for centuries. Once horribly painful and debilitating, gout is now easily controlled with proper treatment. What causes it? Gout is one of the few types of arthritis where the cause is known. It results from deposits of needle-like crystals of uric acid in the connective tissue, joint spaces, or both. Uric acid is a byproduct of the breakdown of purines or waste products in the body. Normally uric acid breaks down in the blood and is eliminated in urine. When the body increases its production of uric acid or if the kidneys do not eliminate enough uric acid from the body, levels build up. This is called hyperuricemia. Hyperuricemia is not a disease and is not dangerous. However, if excess uric acid crystals form as a result of hyperuricemia, gout can develop.

It describes what gout is and how it develops. It also explains how gout is diagnosed and treated. If you have further questions after reading this booklet, you may wish to discuss them with your doctor. What Is Gout? Gout is one of the most painful rheumatic diseases. It results from deposits of needle-like crystals of uric acid in connective tissue, in the joint space between two bones, or in both. These deposits lead to inflammatory arthritis, which causes swelling, redness, heat, pain, and stiffness in the joints. The term arthritis refers to more than 100 different rheumatic diseases that affect the joints, muscles, and bones, as well as other tissues and structures. Gout accounts for approximately 5 percent of all cases of arthritis. Pseudogout is sometimes confused with gout because it produces similar symptoms of inflammation. However, in this condition, also called chondrocalcinosis, deposits are made up of calcium phosphate crystals, not uric acid. Therefore, pseudogout is treated somewhat differently and is not reviewed in this booklet.
