The Society for the Lepers of Paraguay needs funds to purchase medicine to cure those in Paraguay who suffer from Hansens Leprosy Hansens Disease is a difficult disease to control, especially in a country like Paraguay where leprosy is a social problem. Lack of education still causes people with Hansens Leprosy to be outcasts. Many people with the disease, who live in the country, will not report or register their disease, often out of fear of loosing their jobs. Many times they refuse to be treatment for the same reason. In the rural areas leprosy is on the rise. The Patronata de Leproso del Paraguay (Society for the Lepers of Paraguay) last reported that there are approximately 1,200 adults and children infected with Hansens Leprosy, and this is a low estimate. The medicine that is used for the cure of Hansens Disease must be taken for two years. Patronata de Leproso del Paraguay is able to purchase the medicine at a very low price. For just $20 per month ($240 per year) you can help provide a cure for a special child or adult The Leprosy Sponsorship Program is coordinated through Anibal Fadlala, Vice President of the Patronata de Leproso del Paraguay.

Communicable Disease Report
Current Status in Hawai`i
The countries with the highest prevalence rates in the world are neighbors of Hawai`i, the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) at 35/10,000 and the Republic of Marshall Islands (RMI) at 15/10,000. Therefore, it is not surprising that the number of new patients in Hawai`i originating from FSM and RMI have increased. The majority of newly diagnosed patients in Hawai`i during the past 20 years were born in the Philippines, but as the prevalence rate in the Philippines nears the target at 1.26 per 10,000, these numbers are decreasing.
Global Reduction in Prevalence Rates
The remarkable improvements in world prevalence rates have been accomplished through the use of multi-drug therapy (rifampin, dapsone, clofasamine) administered through very well managed public health programs. The medicines have been donated by the Sasakawa Memorial Health Foundation given through WHO to almost all of the 55 endemic countries. The Pacific island countries of FSM and RMI became a part of the WHO sponsored multi-drug programs later than most countries and have not yet received the benefits of well focused public health programs. Thus new patients will continue to be diagnosed in Hawai`i for many years as people from these countries enter Hawai`i for reasons of employment, education, and relocation.
Effectiveness of Multi-Drug Therapy
Continuing Concerns
Once the person has completed a full course of treatment, the person is removed from the registry and is no longer considered a patient in terms of calculating the prevalence rate. They may, however, have persisting disabilities.

Hansen's Disease
PATRICIA I. WATHEN, MD, San Antonio, TX
ABSTRACT: Physicians in the United States may encounter Hansen's disease in immigrants and in patients from endemic areas such as Texas, Louisiana, Hawaii, and California. Exposure to infected armadillos may be one means of acquiring the disease. The Mycobacterium leprae bacillus has a predilection for nerves and skin in the cooler areas of the body. The limited tuberculoid form of the disease is characterized by one or a few hypoesthetic skin lesions and palpably enlarged nerves. The more extensive lepromatous form of the disease appears as multiple nodular skin lesions, sometimes with involvement of the nasal structures and eye. Current recommended regimens for treatment of Hansen's disease are based on combinations of dapsone, rifampin, and clofazimine. Recent advances in treatment have resulted in a significant decline in the worldwide prevalence of the disease. Hansen's disease is a major international health problem. Recent advances in treatment have significantly reduced the disease prevalence, but there are still an estimated 2.4 million cases worldwide.1 Although it is a rare disease in the United States, with 2,217 cases reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from 1984 to 1993,2 primary care physicians in endemic areas or those who treat immigrants may encounter cases of Hansen's disease. Ninety percent of US cases involve patients who have lived in foreign countries where the disease is endemic, primarily Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Hansen's disease is also endemic in Texas, Hawaii, Louisiana, and California.3 Contact with armadillos has been identified as a possible mode of transmission of the disease to humans.

Hansens disease is not a hereditary disease and it is similar a tubercle by the third part of an infectious disease designated by law. It is infected from Hansens bacilli that is a chronic skin infectious disease.
First of all early detection is of vital importance , symptoms which a peripheral nerve is paralyzed, feeling loses, speckles appear on the skin and wound is difficult to get well. If it in its early stages treats MDT, it recovers completely and can prevent handicap. But If you do not do, you can be disabled.
Hansens disease is a person who has caught a contagious disease or a person who has caught a noncontagious disease. a person who has caught a contagious disease infect another but they can be hospitalized without cost.
In modern medically Hansens disease is not at all fearful Heavens judgment. If you take main medicines, you cure completely.

What is Hansen's disease?
Hansen's disease, commonly referred to as leprosy, is a chronic infectious disease caused by the mycobacterium leprae bacteria. This disease can cause severe deformity of the feet, hands and face. The bacteria that cause leprosy thrive in cool areas of the body such as the skin, nerves near the skin surface and in oral and nasal mucus membranes. The infection leads to a loss of sensation in the affected areas. Leprosy was once a widespread disease but is now generally classified as a tropical disease, with the larger numbers of cases concentrated in Brazil, India, Nigeria, Indonesia, Bangladesh and Myanmar. Only about five percent of the people who are infected with the bacteria actually develop the disease. The immune system generally prevent the development of leprosy. However, it has been found that some people are naturally more susceptible to the infection, while others carry a natural immunity. When an individual does develop symptoms, they are usually mild. The disease is only fatal in rare cases or in cases where other complications have taken hold. bodyOffer(31875) Hansens's disease has two forms-tuberculoid (paucibacillary Hansen's disease) and lepromatous (multibacillary Hansen's disease).

May 20, 2001 DEATH FOR THE MONTAGNARDS OF VIETNAM The demonstrations started last August in Darlak Province when local communist officials confiscated the land of a number of Montagnards suffering from Hansens disease and were confined to a leprosy gulag. When violently confronted by armed police, the lepers, many without fingers and toes, defended themselves with sticks, stones and farm implements. Hansens disease, arrested among the Montagnards during the Vietnam War with American medical assistance, has now reached epidemic levels, treated by the communists with only benign neglect. The demonstrations continued to grow and culminated in March of this year when tens of thousands spontaneously turned out in most all of the Central Highland provinces. These protests started when two Montagnard Protestant Pastors were arrested in Pleiku province after complaints over the burning of their house-churches (private residences where services are held). With their ancestral lands confiscated for coffee plantations, the Montagnard are no longer able to grow enough food for subsistence. This has led to wide-scale malnourishment and starvation among the Montagnards, while the government officials get rich from coffee sales. The communist's response to their hunger was, "Since you are Christians, let your God Jesus feed you from the sky." On February 8, Y Luyen Nie, the President of the Darlak Provincal Council, announced, "We will severely punish Christian believers in the Western Highlands until they will no longer be able to raise their heads." According to a recent report to the U.N. Commission on Human Rights in Geneva, Vietnamese authorities crucified three members of a church group in Phu Thien, Gialia province.
