Hay fever By Dr. Trisha Macnair Pollen is mostly to blame Weather plays a part Avoiding trouble ... Medications to help Last Saturday, three of my best friends sat in my garden, tears streaming down their eyes, begging me for help. There hadn't been a death or even grave news of serious illness. I had simply invited them around for tea in the garden, forgetting that the hay fever season was in full swing again. And how they all suffered. Along with at least 7 million other people in the UK, my friends were struggling to cope with blocked noses, constant tickly sneezing, watery itchy eyes, headaches, disturbed sleep, listlessness and depression - hay fever symptoms which can last for months. Pollen is mostly to blame Hay fever, also known as seasonal allergic rhinitis, is a reaction to pollen and fungal spores. Each person with hay fever will show a slightly different pattern of symptoms, depending on which particular pollen or spores they react to. As different plants come into flower at different times, so the picture of symptoms changes. For example, the season generally begins with the release of pollen by trees. This may start as early as February and continue to late May. Trees such as Birch and Oak are particularly to blame. Most people with hay fever are allergic to grass pollens, which appear between May and September, but are at their peak in June and July. For pictures of the worst grassy villains, see:

A Rodale Press contribution
Dogs and cats with hay fever? You bet! Like their owners, many pets are sensitive to airborne annoyances not just pollens or molds but also such things as dust, feathers and wool. But while people with hay fever get red eyes, runny noses and explosive sneezing attacks, pets are more likely to get downright itchy. To soothe their skin and help keep allergies under control, here's what experts recommend. For Dogs and Cats Calm it with cool water.
Giving your pet a cool-water soak is a quick way to ease itchy skin, says John MacDonald, D.V.M., associate professor of dermatology at the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine in Alabama. Bathe your pet for five to ten minutes, he advises. Make sure the water is cool. "Warm water aggravates the itch," Dr. MacDonald says. Since it's a rare cat that goes willingly to the tub, getting her wet can be a challenge. See "How to Give Your Cat a Bath" on page 186 for tips. Ease it with oatmeal.

Advice to Seasonal Allergy Sufferers

Hay fever is one of the most common allergies. It can cause an itchy nose and eyes, sniffling and sneezing with a clear nasal discharge, and possibly also sinus or ear congestion. These symptoms return year after year, probably for a lifetime. The trigger for these reactions is usually pollen, but can be animal dander, smoke, molds, or anything else your child is allergic to.
Preventing Symptoms
These suggestions cover a number of different areas. Use those which are helpful to your child.
  • Keep the child's bedroom windows closed; if possible use air conditioning or filters. Recirculate the air in the room rather than pulling in air from outdoors, and change the filters frequently. Ducts for central heating and air conditioning should be professionally cleaned yearly.
  • Avoid drives in the country or outings where pollen is common. Pollens from grasses, weeds and even trees are lightweight and can be carried for miles. The pollen count is especially high when it is windy.

NEW ORLEANS, March 19, 1996 A new investigational once-daily water-based nasal spray, Nasacort AQ (triamcinolone acetonide), can safely and effectively treat hay fever symptoms in patients as young as six years of age, according to the results of a new study presented today at the 52nd Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology. Hay fever also called seasonal allergic rhinitis is a common health problem, affecting approximately 22 million Americans of all ages. The new data showed that Nasacort AQ, a nasally inhaled corticosteroid, relieves hay fever symptoms caused by an allergy to grass pollen in children ranging from six to eleven years of age. "Since 16 percent of all six to 12-year-olds have hay fever, it is important to develop simple, safe, and effective treatments for this population," said Guy Settipane, M.D., clinical professor of medicine at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, and one of the trial's lead investigators. "Our findings strongly suggest that Nasacort AQ can help satisfy this objective." The Phase III trial included 223 children ranging from six to 12 years of age who had a history of hay fever induced by an allergy to spring grass and whose symptoms had not been adequately controlled by antihistamines, decongestants, and/or immunotherapy.

Hay Fever
Hay fever is caused by an allergy to pollen. Common symptoms are a runny nose, itchy nose, blocked nose, sneezing, and itchy eyes. Treatment usually works well. Common treatments are antihistamine tablets and/or a steroid nose spray.
What is hay fever? Hay fever (also called seasonal allergic rhinitis) is caused by an allergy to pollens or moulds. Grass pollen is the most common cause (May to July). Less common causes are tree pollens (March to May), and moulds (July to September). Symptoms are due to the immune system 'over-reacting' to the pollen or mould. Cells of the immune system in your nose and eyes release histamine and other chemicals when they come in contact with pollen. This causes inflammation in the nose (rhinitis) and eyes (conjunctivitis). Who gets hay fever? At least 1 in 10 people in the UK have hay fever. It usually first develops before the age of 20. Symptoms return for a season each year, but it eventually goes away or improves in many cases. (The condition goes in about 1 in 5 cases, and improves in about half of cases over 5-20 years.) What are the symptoms of hay fever?

HEALTHTRACK - JUL/AUG 97
A SUPPLEMENT TO THE PHYSICIAN AND SPORTSMEDICINE FOR THE WAITING ROOM Summertime is sneezin' season for people who have hay fever. For them, Mother Nature is sending out tiny 'guided missiles' in the form of pollen grains and mold spores. I f you're a hay fever sufferer, it might help to know you're not alone. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, based in Bethesda, Maryland, estimates that 35 million Americans experience upper-respiratory allergic reactions to airborne pollen.
Why Do I Sneeze?
Hay fever is another term for allergic rhinitis , a condition that seasonally affects people who are allergic to pollen or mold, and year-round affects people who are allergic to house dust or furry animals. It's thought that people inherit the tendency to have allergies. Problems occur when a person's immune system reacts to the pollen, mold, dust, or other irritant as if it were an alien invader. The result is watery nasal discharge; sneezing; coughing; itchy eyes, nose, and throat; nasal congestion; and dark circles under the eyes.
Pesky Pollen
Pollen allergies, common during spring, summer, and fall, are caused by trees, grasses, and weeds. Weeds deserve their bad reputation as heavy pollen offenders; ragweed is the major culprit.

http://www.mckinley.uiuc.edu/health-info/dis-cond/allergy/allergrh.html
Allergic Rhinitis Allergic rhinitis (commonly called hay fever) is an inflammation or irritation of the mucous membranes that line the nose. Common symptoms include sneezing; a stuffy or runny nose; itchy eyes, nose and throat; and watery eyes. You may also have a nasal voice; breathe noisily; snore; feel chronically tired; have a poor appetite; feel nauseated; have frequent headaches; and, have some difficulty hearing and smelling. CAUSES
Allergic rhinitis happens when an allergen (an allergy-producing substance, such as pollen) causes your body to defend itself by producing antibodies. When an allergen and an antibody combine, your body releases histamine and other chemical substances into your bloodstream, which causes an allergic response. Pollen, dust, mold or other substances that can be inhaled, are common allergens that cause symptoms. Seasonal allergic rhinitis usually results from tree, grass or weed pollen. With this type of rhinitis, symptoms will decrease with the arrival of cold weather. Perennial allergic rhinitis can cause year-round symptoms. This allergic reaction is the result of indoor irritants such as feathers, mold spores, animal danders (hair and skin shed by pets) or dust mites.

Global Warming Is Bad News for Hay Fever Sufferers February 4, 2003 LONDON (Reuters) - Hay fever sufferers will be facing a longer season of sneezing, itchy eyes and nasal congestion because trees and grasses are sprouting earlier than normal thanks to global warming. A national phenological survey, which monitors the timing of nature's events in a changing environment, has shown that the seasons are shifting and the earlier and longer season triggered by warmer global temperatures is bad news for people with hay fever. "Higher temperatures and climate change is adding to people's woes still further. This really is the first time there has been a medical, or consumer angle, to the climate change story," a spokesman for the Woodland Trust told Reuters on Tuesday. "We've all heard about its impact on species but this is the first time that we will actually see an impact on people as well," he added. The Woodland Trust, Britain's leading woodland conservation charity, sponsors the yearly phenological survey by 18,000 recorders across the country. Volunteers jot down the first signs of spring, such as the flowering of grasses, blooming of flowers and trees and arrival of certain birds and butterflies, which is helping the trust build a database to make predictions about seasonal changes.

To the Allergies Center Hay fever, also known as allergic rhinitis, is an allergic response to pollen (the male component of the plant reproductive system), mold (a type of fungus that is usually found in the outdoor environment and in damp, dark indoor areas like the basement or bathroom), or other microscopic substances. Hay fever can be either seasonal or perennial (year-round). Seasonal hay fever occurs when particular plants or trees produce pollen, which is released into the air to fertilize the eggs of that plant or tree. In the spring, pollinating trees are responsible for causing hay fever. Over the summer, grasses and weeds produce the pollen. And in the fall, ragweed is usually the culprit. Hay fever can also be caused by fungus releasing its reproductive cells, called spores, from late March until November.
