What are the symptoms of hay fever? Inhaled allergens trigger sneezing and inflammation of the nose and mucous membranes (conjunctiva) of the eyes. The nose, roof of the mouth, eyes, and throat begin to itch gradually or abruptly after the onset of the pollen season. Tearing, sneezing, and clear, watery nasal discharge soon follow the itching. Headaches and irritability may also occur.

Hay Fever Also indexed as: Allergic Rhinitis, Allergy (Hay Fever), Pollen Allergy Acute attacks of hay fever often respond to homeopathic remedies. Allergies are usually deep-seated problems, and are often best addressed with a constitutional remedy and the guidance of an experienced practitioner.
What Is Homeopathy?
Allium cepa: Indications for this remedy include watery eyes and a clear nasal discharge that irritates the upper lip, along with sneezing and a tickling cough. The person usually is thirsty, and feels worse indoors and when rooms are warm, and better in fresh air. Arsenicum album: A burning, watery, runny nose with a stuffy, tickling feeling during allergy attacks suggests a need for this remedy. Swelling below the eyes and a wheezy cough are common. The person may feel chilly, restless, anxious, and is often very tired. Euphrasia: This remedy can be helpful if the eyes are swollen and irritated with acrid tears or pus. The nose also runs, but with a blander discharge. Symptoms are often worse in the daytime and worse from warmth, and the eyes may hurt from too much light. The person can also have a cough in the daytime, which improves at night. Ferrum phosphoricum: This is a very useful remedy in the early stages of any inflammation. Taken when allergy symptoms start, it often slows or stops an episode. Symptoms include runny eyes with a burning or gritty feeling, facial flushing, watery nose, and short, hard, tickling cough.

My patient came into the clinic complaining of sneezing, runny nose, eyes that are red, itchy and watery, headache, blocked sinuses, unable to sleep. There can be no mistaking these miseries. They are known all too well to hay fever sufferers. The side effects of chronic or untreated hay fever can make a person feel constantly ill. Adults and children can become irritable and moody. They may have difficulty falling asleep at night owing to the nasal congestion. I treated her with acupuncture and in a short period of time, she was very much helped. Acupuncture offers an effective treatment for hay fever. It can achieve fairly fast and lasting results. Nasal congestion, discharge, and itching are usually relieved during the first acupuncture treatment. Six treatments may be needed to give lasting relief of hay fever symptoms. Some patients return for a series of six treatments each year just before what used to be their hay fever season. Others remain free from hay fever for years after one course of acupuncture treatments. WHAT IS HAY FEVER Hay fever or allergic rhinitis, is a chronic inflammation of the nose, throat, and sinuses. It is induced by external irritants, usually pollens carried in the air. Spring hay fever is related to tree pollen, summer to grass pollen and autumn to weed pollen. Non seasonal allergies are usually due to household irritants such as dust, animal hair, droppings of the house dust mite, mould, mildew, insect stings and bites. People with pollen sensitivities have a hard time as it is difficult to avoid pollen because it is in the air that we breathe. For many people with hay fever, spring and summer represent a real nightmare. A small number of hay fever sufferers experience symptoms that significantly interfere with everyday life and are difficult to control with medication.

Insight into causes, treatment, and prevention
Forty-five million Americans suffer from a recurring problem called allergy. Allergic rhinitis was once known as hay fever because workers would sneeze and develop nasal and sinus congestion when they worked around hay in the fields. Hay fever, asthma, and eczema are the most common symptoms of an allergic reaction.
Allergy symptoms appear when the body's immune system begins to respond to a substance as though it were a dangerous invader (called an antigen or allergen). It does this by sending specific defenders called antibodies to the entry site. The battle between allergen and antibody results in a release of chemical mediators, such as histamine, into the bloodstream. Those chemical mediators cause changes in the body, which produce the symptoms that we feel.
Symptoms that may be caused by allergy are itching eyes, sneezing, nasal stuffiness, nasal congestion and drainage, and sometimes headache. Some people experience hearing changes, scratchy sore throats, hoarseness, and cough. Other less common symptoms include balance disturbances, swelling in face or throat tissues, skin irritations, and even respiratory problems and asthma.
Some allergy sufferers experience symptoms all year. Others find certain seasons bring on attacks. Allergy symptom control is most successful when multiple management approaches are used simultaneously. Minimizing exposure to allergens, managing symptoms with medications, and desensitization with allergy shots are all methods that can be useful in controlling allergic symptoms.

Allergies pose a significant and serious health problem in this country. According to conservative estimates, nearly 15 million Americans are plagued by hay fever and 10 million have asthma. Twelve million more Americans suffer from such allergies as eczema and hives, not to mention allergic reactions to food, drugs, and insect stings. Most of these disorders have a hereditary component and tend to run in families
What Is An Allergic Reaction?
Basically, an allergic reaction occurs whenever the immune system overreacts to a seemingly harmless substance. Known as allergens, these substances include pollen, mold, house dust, mites, animal saliva and dander (skin shed by cats, dogs, or rabbits), feathers (such as those used in feather pillows), certain foods and drugs, and insect stings. Allergens are usually absorbed into the body by way of the skin, nasal passages, lungs, or digestive tract. Once inside the body, allergens stimulate the lymphocytes (small white blood cells) to produce what are known as allergic antibodies. The reaction between the allergen and these antibodies, which are attached to certain special cells (mast cells), leads to inflammation of the nose, eyes, lungs, and the digestive tract. A stuffy nose, sneezing, wheezing, skin rash, watery eyes, abdominal cramps, and nausea are some of the most common results.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
If you have hay feverknown medically as allergic rhinitis (rine-I-tis)the inside of your nose will become red and swollen when you breathe in particles to which you are sensitive. Seasonal allergic rhinitis occurs only at certain times of the year (for example, the spring or fall), while nonseasonal allergic rhinitis can affect susceptible people during any season. Treatment can relieve the symptoms but will not cure the problem.
Causes
Seasonal allergic rhinitis is caused by pollen from ragweed, grasses, and trees, depending on the time of year. House dust, feathers, mold, and animals cause the nonseasonal variety. Tobacco smoke, air pollution, and sudden changes in temperature may make the condition worse.
Signs/Symptoms
The most familiar symptoms are sneezing and an itchy, runny, or stuffy nose. In addition, the eyes may be itchy, red, swollen, burning, or watery. Other possible symptoms include an itchy throat, coughing, and headache.

Hay Fever ( allergic rhinitis
“Seasonal allergic rhinitis” describes nasal allergies that change with the seasons due to pollen from plants. “Hay fever,” a popular term for seasonal allergies, was coined in 1828 by a British physician, Dr. John Bostock, who noticed that his symptoms worsened during the British haying season. (The expression "hay fever" is misleading because allergies seldom cause a fever and are rarely related to hay.) We use a variety of approaches to treat hayfever and conjunctivitis. We first identify which allergies actually exist for an individual . Next we explore ways to avoid those specific allergens. We use a wide repertoire of medications to control allergy symptoms. For those who still have problems despite these measures we offer desensitization. Our immunotherapy (allergy shots) protocol can bring allergies under control in 3 to 4 months.
Causes of hay fever
Ragweed - Ragweed, a tall, branched plant, is found throughout the lower 48 states on dry fields, pastures, roadsides, and construction sites. A native of North America, it also grows on every other continent except Antarctica. Tree Pollens - Although pine trees generate clouds of pollen, they do not usually trigger your sneezing and runny nose. Likewise, fruit-bearing trees, which depend on insects for pollination, almost never create an allergic response. These pollens tend to be heavy, sticky, and less numerous. The real troublemakers are hardwood deciduous trees — oak, elm, birch, maple, ash, alder, and hazel.

The spring that Toby turned one he began chewing on his feet to the point that he began loosing hair from them. I had just changed dog foods so I went back to the old food thinking that had caused the problem. When that did not stop it, I began making their food from a reputable natural recipe. He continued chewing the hair off his feet and rubbing his nose until the little white strip on his nose disappeared leaving a red streak in its place. I felt sure it was an allergy, but didn't know to what until I realized one day, that when my hay fever was really acting up Toby was worse. I didn't want to take him to the vet because I was sure that the only thing they could do was give him cortisone. When he was really bad I gave him Benedryl which I had been advised to give him before for an allergic reaction to a food.
