Headache BASIC FACTS ABOUT HEADACHES
Twenty million Americans see their doctors each year because of a headache. Although headaches can be very uncomfortable and temporarily disabling, most are not associated with serious illness. They can often be relieved by resting in a quiet room or by taking a nonprescription painkiller such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen. When a person has a headache, several areas of the head can hurt, including a network of nerves that extends over the scalp and certain nerves in the face, mouth and throat. Rarely, headache is a symptom of a dangerous condition such cerebral aneurysm, brain tumor, stroke, TIA, meningitis, or encephalitis. Very high blood pressure can cause headaches and this situation is a medical emergency. However, high blood pressure usually causes no symptoms at all, despite the damage that years of high blood pressure can do to blood vessels, heart, brain, and kidneys. If you have any doubt about your headache, contact your physician. HEADACHE BASICS
The most common type of headache is "tension headache." Tension headaches generally develop gradually, often involve the entire head as well as the neck and shoulders. They probably are not actually caused by increased muscle tension, although muscle relaxation techniques can be very useful in treatment. Most people get tension headaches occasionally and these can usually be treated simply. Some people get them often, but there are usually some useful interventions to help decrease the number of sick days.

Cluster Headaches What is a cluster headache?
A cluster headache is a rare type of headache that is more common in men. Cluster headaches start suddenly. The pain is usually behind or around one eye and is very severe. The eye and nose on the same side as the pain may become red, swollen and runny. Cluster headaches also cause restlessness. These headaches can be frightening to the sufferer and his or her family. A cluster headache can last a few minutes or several hours, but it usually lasts for 30 to 45 minutes. Cluster headaches typically occur at the same time each day for several weeks, until the "cluster period" is over. Cluster periods usually last 4 to 8 weeks and may occur every few months. At other times, no cluster headaches will occur. What causes cluster headaches? The cause of cluster headaches is not known. Cluster headaches do not appear to be related to other illnesses or to diseases of the brain. They do not seem to run in families. How do I know if I have cluster headaches? Your description of your headaches will help your doctor make the diagnosis. The time and pattern of attacks are very important, so keep a diary of your pain. Family members or others who see you during a headache can also help by telling the doctor how you look and act. Don't be embarrassed to tell your doctor about your attempts to relieve the pain (such as banging your head against furniture). These attempts are common, and talking about them will help your doctor judge how severe the headaches are.

Tension Headaches What are tension headaches?
Most people describe a tension headache as a constant dull, achy feeling on both sides of the head. Some people with tension headaches also have a tight feeling in their head or neck muscles. Tension headaches usually begin slowly and gradually. They often start in the middle of the day. Another name for this type of headache is "stress headache." When people say they have a stress headache, they usually mean they have a tension headache. Tension headaches may be mild or severe. Sometimes they hurt more than migraine headaches. How are tension headaches diagnosed? Your doctor often can tell what kind of headache you have by examining you and hearing your description of the pain. Blood tests, x-rays or brain scanssuch as computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)usually are not needed. How are tension headaches treated? If you only have tension headaches occasionally, an over-the-counter (available without a prescription) pain reliever can probably help. When choosing an over-the-counter pain reliever, check the label for possible side effects or interactions with other medicines you are taking. Always read and follow the directions on the label carefully. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist. If you have tension headaches almost every day or over-the-counter medicines don't help your pain, you should see a doctor. He or she may prescribe some medicine that you take only when you have a headache to relieve the pain. It's best to treat tension headaches when they begin and are still mildbefore they get more painful.

03:00 AM Jun. 02, 1999 PT British researchers on Tuesday questioned how well new "super-aspirin" work. The COX-2 inhibitors, as they are called, may in some cases worsen conditions that cause pain and inflammation. Experiments on rats may explain why the new COX-2 inhibitors help relieve the initial symptomatic pain of diseases such as arthritis but do not help the underlying damage, according to Paul Colville-Nash and colleagues at the William Harvey Research Institute in London.

The drugs are designed to be an improvement on old-fashioned aspirin and related drugs, known as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs.

"Suddenly a huge phantom bird sank three talons of its angry claws deeply into my head and face and tried to lift me. No warnings, no preliminary signs. Just wham! A massive, killing pain came over my right eye. I clutched my head, stumbled out to the broad lawns and over the hedges to the deserted tennis courts and then, there in the dark, I moaned, I panted. Ballooned my cheeks, blew out short bursts of air, licked my hot lips, wiped tears that poured out of my right eye, and clawed at my head trying to uproot the fiendish talons from their iron grip. One racking hour later the talons let go. The paroxysm eased as suddenly as it had convulsed. Euphoria set in. It’s gone! Whopping headache, but it’s gone!..."
