Although some health problems require specific medication, many conditions can be relieved effectively with nutritional therapy. These include disorders ranging from chronic fatigue, energy loss, insomnia and depression, to backache, skin complaints, asthma, and headaches. Nutritional therapy will also benefit you if you have no specific illness, but want to maintain a state of optimum health. It is safe for babies and children as well as adults, and the change of eating patterns that is typically prescribed usually has far fewer side effects than synthetic medicines. Nutritional therapy is a holistic discipline; nutrition as the key to good health is the all-embracing fundamental principle used since the time of the famous Greek doctor and founder of western medicine, Hippocrates, to help people of all ages to stay at their personal peak of energy and vitality. Today, new insights of food scientists play a significant role in the practice of nutritional therapy as preventative medicine.

New area codes can cause headaches
95 new codes imposed in last two years
December 31, 1997 Web posted at: 7:01 p.m. EST (0001 GMT) DETROIT (CNN) With Americans communicating more than ever with cellular phones, faxes, modems, pagers and even plain old telephones new area codes are being assigned at a rate of about one a month. In 1995, there were 144 area codes. By the end of 1997, there were 239. And new area codes mean headaches for consumers. Take, for instance, the city of Farmington Hills, Michigan. When its area code was changed, the city had to spend thousands to tell residents about the new numbers. Phone numbers on letterheads, various publications and the city newsletter all had to be changed. And come New Year's Day, the addition of a new area code will require every phone customer in metropolitan Atlanta, home to more than 3 million people, to begin dialing 10 digits (the area code plus the local phone number) to complete every call even calls to people next door. That's because, rather than carving out a separate geographic area for a new area code, the local phone company, Bell South, is instead just using the new number is the same areas where two existing area codes are being used.

What is a migraine and how does it differ from tension headaches?
Tension headaches are usually described as a continuous pressure pain or tightness of varying severity over the entire head, whereas migraine headaches are a severe, throbbing pain over one or both temples, or behind one eye or ear, and are often accompanied by nausea and vomiting. A migraine often starts on waking up in the morning, but can occur later in the day and can last hours to one or two days. In individuals with a form of migraine called classic migraine, visual symptoms described as bluriness, dazzling zigzag lines, blind spots or sensitivity to light occur just before and sometimes during the headache. While fatigue and stress can sometimes bring on both tension and migraine headaches, bright lights, noise and alcohol are specific factors that can trigger a migraine.

Delayed benefit checks could mean big headaches for states
November 28, 1998
Web posted at: 1:41 a.m. EST (0641 GMT) NEW YORK (CNN) Unemployed people, Medicaid and welfare recipients could face major delays in receiving their benefit checks unless states step up efforts to ready their computer systems for 2000, The New York Times reports. The paper quotes a california official warning that states ignore the problem at their own peril "If social services are disrupted, you'll have more than computer problems," said John Thomas Flynn, chief information officer of California. "You could see civil disturbances. That's why this issue is a high priority for us." Only one-third of the 421 computer systems used for seven major health, welfare and nutrition programs is ready, the Times said, citing a recent General Accounting Office report. Failure to fix the computer bug "could result in billions of dollars not being delivered," according to the report.

Skier glee, commuter headaches throughout West
December 9, 1997
Web posted at: 2:39 p.m. EST (1939 GMT) (CNN) Winter came early to some western and central parts of the nation as a powerful storm system brought snow, icy roads, downed power lines and traffic disruptions to areas stretching from the Pacific Coast to Kansas City, Missouri. Snow, sleet and rain have been falling since Sunday in parts of Missouri, where more of the same was expected Tuesday. Up to 6 inches of snow reported in the northern part of the state caused some roads to ice over. The storm closed schools and made driving dangerous. Three people were killed in weather-related traffic accidents. Authorities urged drivers to beware of more slick road conditions Tuesday.
Map of snow-hit areas

At least one Kansas City teen-ager found some things were not disrupted. "My mom said I have to shovel the driveway, do my chores all day," he said. "I just got in trouble for not doing my chores, so now I'm grounded all day." Snow plows at work in Kansas City In California, fickle weather made it difficult for residents to prepare. Two days of heavy rains that flooded some parts of Southern California changed by Monday evening to heavy snow in mountain regions. Hail, heavy rains and even a funnel cloud were reported farther south.

Headaches: Risks, Types, and Headache Treatments by Tracee Cornforth Who gets headaches? Headaches are a common complaint among both sexes, although women do have a slight edge beating the men out 95 to 90 percent. Of the more than forty- five million, Americans, who suffer from chronic headaches each year, it's estimated that at least sixteen million suffer from migraines. Migraine headaches occur in women three times as often as in men and affect approximately 18 percent of women in the United States, while only 6 percent of men experience migraines. Studies have found clear evidence that 60 percent of women who experience headaches can trace the root of their headache to their menstrual cycle. A related study shows a rapid drop of estrogen levels usually occurs for several days following a migraine. Women who experience migraines are at an increased risk of a stroke and should not to take oral contraceptives due to the possibility of a stroke occurring during a migraine headache.

Doctors Dentists ... Pharmacies REFERENCE H eadaches (From the PDR Family Guide to Women's Health Chapter 14) Recurring headache may be the most common reason for seeking medical care. Headaches account for about 10 million visits to physicians' offices each year—not counting visits to nonphysicians, chiropractors, hypnotists, or other health care providers who offer headache relief. But as common as the condition is, it is still in many respects a mystery. Researchers aren't exactly sure what causes headaches or which people are more susceptible, though they believe a biological predisposition may be responsible and that overuse of pain-relievers and caffeine can make them worse. Likewise, doctors can't always tell what kind of headache an individual has and therefore what kind of medicine would be best. You've probably heard headaches described in various ways; terms often used include tension headache, muscle contraction headache, stress headache, daily chronic headache, migraine headache, and cluster headache. Specialists also deal with posttraumatic headache and disease-related headache.

Migraine Headaches
What most people think are migraine headaches are really tension headaches. "Real" migraine headaches are usually associated with nausea or vomiting and tend to be preceded by seeing flashes of light, zigzags, blind spots, or stars. Doctors call these preceding visual symptoms "auras," which are not nearly as much fun or as practical as what New Age people refer to as auras (and the nausea is no fun at all). Migraines are often triggered by psychological stress, but distinct from tension headaches, migraines tend to begin after a stressed person is finally able to relax; then that "relaxing" weekend or vacation becomes relaxation hell. During a migraine headache, blood vessels initially become overly constricted and then abnormally widened. You usually experience this pain on one side of the head, which can make you feel lopsided. Timber! Other triggers of migraines are sleeping too long, bright lights, too much time between eating, and fluctuations in hormone levels (some women get migraines during menstruation or during ovulation). Certain foods, drinks, and drugs can also set off a migraine.
