I have been taking 25 mg Amitriptyline and 120 mg Verapamil daily for migraine management for about 2 months now. Do either of these medications stimulate weight gain?
Amitriptyline (trade name Elavil or Endep) is an antidepressant. It increases your appetite for carbohydrates and may increase your need for riboflavin above your RDA, which is 1.3 mg for adult females and 1.7 mg for adult males. You should avoid alcohol and limit caffeine. Some other effects are possibly nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth, altered taste, loss of appetite, increased or decreased weight, increased or decreased blood glucose. I know many of these are contradictory, but are provided as significant. Verapamil (trade name Calan or Isoptin) regulates irregular heartbeats (arrhythmia). It does not have any effect on your food intake nor should it effect your weight unless you already have problems with fluid retention because of your heart's ability as a pump. You should avoid alcohol as well with this medication. Constipation may be a problem associated with taking this prescription. Since this is a calcium channel blocker, calcium supplements may decrease the effect of this drug. Talk to your doctor and pharmacist.
My husband experienced a bout with bad headaches last July. After months, they finally went away. He constantly "diets", eats a lot of Snack Well products, drinks 0% fat milk and fruit and 1 or 2 diet cokes per day. Has had every test for headaches, outside of allergy tests. After several months of being headache free, he has again started with severe headaches. I can't convince him to see his doctor, because all tests showed nothing "wrong".

Provides basic information to promote understanding of migraine headaches. Describesvascular headaches and suggests using a headache diary to chart symptoms.

Migraine Facts:
Symptoms, Types and Causes
Migraines and the American Population
In terms of work, lifestyle, family and other relationships, migraine headaches are poorly understood by most people. They can be devastating. The pain can make ordinary tasks impossible until it passes. Unfortunately, many employers are less than understanding that "a little headache" can completely sideline a person for days. The misconception that migraine headaches are just bad headaches is common in society.
Twenty-eight million Americans live with the pain of migraines, yet many don't understand even the most fundamental information. Out of those numbers, four and a half million suffer more than one attack a month. Twenty-five percent of the female population is affected, and eight percent of all men. Only about half have been formally diagnosed: the disorder is often misdiagnosed both by doctors and patients.
Vascular and Migraines
Migraines are "vascular" headaches, meaning that their source is the contraction and dilation of blood vessels. Originally, vascular headaches were thought to be caused solely by changes in the dilation of blood vessels. More recent research, however, indicates that the nervous system and genetics contribute to the problem.
The exact causes of vascular headaches are a mystery. Some theories hold that nerve fibers surrounding blood vessels give off chemicals that cause the blood vessels to dilate or constrict. Others suggest that brain neuron activity sets off a reaction in the brain stem that causes the facial arteries to become inflamed. Yet another suggests that the brain's blood vessels spasm, reducing the amount of blood to certain parts of the brain. When the spasm eases, the blood vessels widen, and the sudden dilation causes pain.

http://www.womens-health-naturally.com/headaches.htm
Nutritional Products Headaches Home Membership Nutrition Wisdom FREE FREE Health Reports Headache is a pain in the head from any cause. Kinds of headaches include functional headache, migraine headache, organic headache, sinus headache, and tension headache. Also called cephalalgia. A tension headache includes a pain that affects the back (occipital) region of the body as the result of overwork or emotional strain. It tenses the body and blocks rest and relaxation. Notes: Chronic headaches are the oldest type of persistent ailment on record. They are often tied to food and environmental allergies. Headaches are a result of muscles spasms throughout the vascular system as a reaction to a toxin or allergen. Further, migraines can be related to an inflammatory condition set off by an immune response as the immune system responds to a virus, bacterium, parasite, or carcinogen traveling through the blood stream. Following the 3 rules of health can greatly reduce the number of headaches one will experience. The 3 rules of health are: 1) stop putting toxins in the body; 2) get the toxins that are circulating or stored in the tissues out of the body; and 3) build up the immune system so that the body can deal with the foreign cells before they affect the daily balance

"Most people come to the clinic when everything else has failed,"
says Stuart Donaldson, Ph.D. EMTA, BCFE, ABDA, director of Myosymmetries Calgary. "Typically, their profiles show they have been through 2 1/2 courses of physiotherapy, have tried three types of medication with varying degrees of success and side effects, and they've tried chiropractic. They report temporary relief with traditional treatment modalities, but the pain returns." The typical Myosymmetries client is simply not willing to accept the pain and mental setback of living with pain or dysfunction. "These people are motivated - they want to get better. They take responsibility for their health. They are not content just to sit back and do whatever their doctor tells them." Dr. Donaldson

headache By James Broomfield, MD Images (click to view larger image) A headache is a painful sensation in the muscles, the skin, or one of the organs in the head or near the brain. What is going on in the body? Causes of headaches commonly fall into four categories: vascular headaches, which are caused by conditions affecting the blood vessels. A migraine is a common form of vascular headache. tension headaches , usually brought on by muscle tension inflammatory headaches, which are causd by infections or lesions such as tumors headaches associated with abnormalities of cranial nerves, or cranial neuralgias. The cranial nerves supply the face, head, and neck. There are no nerve endings in the brain itself. Therefore, a headache is a painful sensation in the muscles, the skin, or one of the organs in the head or near the brain. The pain can be confined to a small area or it can cover the entire head. Some headaches are preceded by auras, which are sensations that things are not quite right. These auras can involve unusual sounds, smells or visions. Most headaches are benign, which means they are self-limited and not likely to be serious. However, some headaches are serious and require extensive evaluation.

Overview of this Web Site
See the contents below This cybertext describes the current method of diagnosing and treating tension-type, migraine, medication-abuse (rebound), cluster, and post-traumatic (including post-"whiplash") headaches, which are the basic or core headaches of medical office practice. It also presents the diagnosis and treatment of most of the other headaches seen by physicians in their offices. In addition, it discusses the diagnosis and treatment of headaches seen in emergency rooms.
Although intended for physicians and medical students, this text is also accessible to laypersons. It's revised as needed to incorporate new information from the medical literature. It does not discuss (except for a few comments) the processes underlying headache production, because current knowledge of them is not useful clinically.
