Heart transplant
Definition: Surgical procedure to remove a damaged or diseased heart and transplant a healthy heart.
Alternative Names: Cardiac transplant; Transplant - heart
Description: Heart transplants are the fourth most common (corneas, kidneys and liver are the most common) transplant operations in the U.S. (over 2,200 cases per year). A healthy heart is obtained from a donor who has suffered brain death but remains on life-support. The healthy heart is transported in a special solution that preserves the organ.
While the patient is deep asleep and pain-free (general anesthesia), an incision is made through the breast bone (sternum). The patient's blood is re-routed through tubes to a heart-lung bypass machine to keep the blood oxygen-rich and circulating. The patient's diseased heart is removed and the donor heart is stitched in place.
Indications: A heart transplant may be recommended for:

Join Remove UNDERSTANDING DONATION HEART TRANSPLANT: Who is a candidate for a heart transplant? Heart transplantation is a last-resort option for people with heart failure. To be considered for a heart transplant, a person's heart must be unresponsive to other forms of treatment and all other vital organs must be in excellent health. How is heart transplantation done? The surgery must be performed immediately after a suitable donor heart becomes available. The recipient is placed on a heart-lung machine that takes over the functions of the heart and lungs so the diseased heart can be removed and replaced with the new heart. Once the blood vessels are reconnected, the heart is ready to function.

Second Chances: Receiving the Gift of Life
My book has inspirational stories about donor families and liver, kidney, and heart transplant recipients, including my own heart transplant in 1989. By Jeffrey R. Lueders. My Story
Almost 12 years ago I received the gift of life, a heart transplant. My donor, Brandon, was only 15, riding his bike home when he was tragically hit and killed by a car. That's him on the cover in his football uniform. During my illness and wait for an organ, I lost faith in God but He never gave up on me. My accomplishments and zeal for life since my transplant completing graduate school, getting married, writing this book, all while working full-time as public affairs manager for LifeCenter, the local organ recovery agency in Cincinnati. Other Transplant Recipient Friends
Read about others who have received heart, liver, kidney, and kidney/pancreas transplants as well as a young burn patient who received donated skin. People like Patty Britton, a young woman who has survived 3 liver transplants. Who, in an ironic turn of events, also became a donor mother when her newborn baby Christopher lost his fight for life. A physician at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center and Childrens Hospital of Cincinnati, Dr. Ed Lowe, became a patient when he needed a heart transplant. Paul Hackman, though diabetes had robbed him of his sight and one leg, how he triumphed to carry the Olympic torch through Cincinnati and donate his time to lecture at high schools about organ and tissue donation.

Holub, Miroslav Heart Transplant
Genre Poem Keywords Heart Disease Medical Advances Surgery Technology Summary In typically terse poetic structure, utilizing fresh new images, Holub visualizes removal and replacement of a human heart during a transplant procedure. He describes the throb of the extracorporeal circulation mechanics as an "inaudible New World Symphony" as he elevates the imagery of the hole in the chest where once resided the "king of Blood" transiently into the cosmos. With the arrival of the "new heart," the imagery again becomes earth bound: the structure is sewn in place, the beats resume and the "curves jump like / synthetic sheep" as the EKG rhythm resumes. Commentary In this poem, Holub stays much closer to a description of an actual event than he does in his more dramatically metaphorical pieces. The differences are twofold: the absolute technical wonderment of the achievement is so understated as to be most effective; and the images used, though refreshing, are crystal clear. For example, watch the QRS complex on an EKG screen and you will see sheep jumping in lines and in perfect rhythmas an emblem of the victory of both "life and spirit."

Michigan girl waits for heart transplant, aided by tiny new pump
Friday, February 14, 2003 BY PATRICIA ANSTETT
FREE PRESS MEDICAL WRITER An 11-year-old Michigan girl has become the first American children to receive a miniature fully implantable heart pump, a device increasingly used as a bridge to keep patients alive while awaiting heart transplants. The girl, whose family has asked to remain anonymous, is in good health after the January 30 procedure at the University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor. She celebrated her 11th birthday three days after the six-hour operation. She currently is on a waiting list for a heart transplant. Known as the DeBakey VAD, after the famed Texas heart transplant surgeon Michael DeBakey, the unit is currently undergoing clinical studies. It is made by MicroMed Technology, a Houston company. (For details, see www.micromedtech.com). Heart pumps, also known as ventricular assist devices (VAD), are among the advances in medicine giving greater hope to people needing heart transplants. Someday, improvements in the device may help patients avoid transplants completely, doctors say. Eighteen months ago, a similar procedure was performed on a 10-year-old child at Children's Hospital of Michigan in Detroit, using a partially-implantable pump. She lived with the device for 53 days before getting a heart transplant. She's now back in school, playing soccer, hockey and basketball, according to Dr. Robert Ross, a Children's Hospital pediatric cardiologist and the girl's doctor. The DeBakey device is implanted completely in the chest and attached to the heart, to help pump blood. It is a tiny 1-by-3 inch device that weighs 4 ounces. It's 1/10 of the size of adult devices, making it a good device for pediatric patients, U-M surgeons said. The UM team was led by Dr. Eric Devaney, pediatric cardiac surgeon.

Information for Families of Pediatric Patients and Adults Explanation Indications The Procedure Risks and Complications ... Likelihood of Success What is cardiac transplantation?
Orthotopic cardiac transplantation is the process of explanting (removing) a person's failing heart and replacing it with a suitable donor heart from a person who has been declared clinically brain dead. Heart transplantation indications
Heart transplantation is used as a last resort for people with end-stage heart disease who have no other surgical or medical therapy available. Generally, people listed for heart transplantation have a life expectancy of less than one year, and often much less. In addition, candidates often have significant limitations of their activity and lifestyle prior to transplantation. The goal of heart transplantation is to return the patient to as functional a state as possible with the least amount of limitations and best quality of life.

Huge and misshapen, this heart is about to get replaced. That electronic gadget is a pacemaker and the wires connecting to the old heart. Beating death
POSTED 18 OCT 2001 On Sept. 14, the National Day of Remembrance for victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack, Chucky finally got lucky. James (Chuck) Reynolds, 54, had been waiting in the hospital for three and one-half months for a heart. In other words, he was waiting for a generous stranger to die. A stranger with the correct blood type and a heart suited to Reynolds's large chest. Otherwise, Thomas Starkey, his heart surgeon at University of Wisconsin-Madison Hospital, had told him he would die of heart failure. In fact, Reynolds was already rather far along in the process of retiring from life. A registered nurse from the hills of southwest Wisconsin, his failing heart prevented him from working, even caring for his three young boys.

First heart transplant in new Medical Centre Heart to heart: Vice-Chancellor Prof Njabulo Ndebele (centre) visits heart transplant recipient Loganathan Naidu 12 hours after his heart transplant in the new UCT Medical Centre. Naidu's wife, Mercia, is on the left. A FATHER of two who was admitted to hospital eight times last year in heart failure, received a new lease of life when he underwent a heart transplant in the new UCT Medical Centre (UCTMC) last Monday. The operation marked the first heart transplant to be done in UCTMC since the official opening on February 15, 2002. Loganathan Roy Naidu from Port Elizabeth was very ill when he was brought to Cape Town two months ago to await a donor heart. He had been suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition where the heart muscle loses its elasticity and becomes significantly enlarged. This was diagnosed seven years ago but last year his heart function deteriorated further.
